I have both Mac and Win systems - any advice on which version of BIAB to use? I’ve been told that 2019 Mac version should release in June. Mac is a desktop and Win is a laptop.

Welcome to the forums.

The Windows version includes RealBand which is essentially a reasonably well featured DAW with BiaB integrated functionality.

The Mac version does not include RealBand.

The Windows version is usually released ahead of the Mac Version and may have slightly more functionality.

Also take into account which computer system you are most comfortable in using.

Others will chip in for sure.

Hope this helps.

I have both and I concur with Videotrack. RealBand is Windows only. In recent years, the rest of the features are getting very close between the two platforms.

Thanks for the response - I’m okay in both systems. Just want to have the most function for my bucks - looks like Win is the best given try criteria. BTW, I first bought BIAB version 3.0 which came on diskette - finally getting back into it.

Keep this in mind also.

Mac users will have to chime in here.

I think you can run the Windows version of BIAB on a MAC using Bootcamp. If so, that would give you the ability to run Windows BIAB on 2 computers, your MAC desktop and your PC laptop.

Dr. Gannon has said he develops the Windows version on his Mac.

Hi and welcome to the forms. I just checked the Mac forum and didn't see you there. You should post there too and get their take on this. Also, note how many users are browsing each forum at any one time. It tends to be about 100 on the Win forum and only a few on the Mac forum. To me as a Win guy it seems obvious the Win version gets more attention from PG than Mac but as has been noted they decided to put more effort into the Mac version the last couple of years so maybe they are pretty close now.

BIAB for windows is now the 2019 version. For Mac its still 2018. BIAB Mac is still lagging behind the Windows version.

Don't miss the chance to get RealBand either. Its an amzing add on to BIAB and I didn't relaise you can't get it with the Mac version.

Thanks for the welcome! I’ll try to check out the Mac forum. I think the Windows version makes the most sense. I can import midi files to my Mac and finish out the songs in the DAW. I don’t have great urgency, so I could wait and see what Mac 2019 looks like in June/July. Having it run on a Windows laptop would give me great portability.

Yes, you can Windows on a Mac using bootcamp but it is treated as a PC so viruses affect the Mac.

Macs can get viruses too. From the Symantec website:
Quote:
The big question out there when it comes to Apple products is, “Can a Mac get a virus?” The short answer? Absolutely.

Apple computers can get viruses and malware just like PCs can. While iMacs, MacBooks, Mac Minis, and iPhones may not be as frequent targets as Windows computers, all have their fair share of threats.

Adware, spyware, ransomware, and hardware and software vulnerabilities are some of the problems now affecting Macs, and not just PCs.

I was informed a while back when I asked a tech about boot camping win on a mac,

he said yes no bother, although he said you are then back to running through a sound driver on win bootcamp.

Mac version no sound driver so no Latency problems, that's why Mac has always had a bit of edge over windows for audio production.

mac was popular years ago with the music and artist fraternities (I know I was there). windows has more than caught up - I get no latency with WAS or ASIO drivers. and when you compare the upgrade options with a pc as opposed to a mac there are real advantages.

new sound card? plug it in! new cpu? just as easy

There is always latency using drivers , just you have it set low so it has no effect on you.

Just what I have read/heard believe.

My thinking out loud …!

Computer audio. Latency can be a particular problem in audio platforms, for instance the standard Microsoft Windows audio drivers which can cause latency up to 500 ms. Supported interface optimization will reduce the delay down to times that are too short for the human ear to detect.

They way I understand it. There will always be some form of latency, drivers or not. The data still has to be moved from memory to the audio. (Probably buffered somewhere also) It may be minimal but there is always a cost. It all takes and fights for CPU cycles even if using audio co-processing.

As I understood it but I’m old

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
