Well, kind of...

Tangmo just posted Cloudy Day, and in the off topic forum, dug into the details to the song. Written for a play. Very cool. So I commented.... go read it there.

Here's my post.

Listing for a song to close a movie. Ending scene and fade to black as the credits start to roll.

Set up: Song needs to sum up the movie and reflect the melancholy mood of the actor. Young brilliant scientist works for a pharmaceutical company in R&D. He has it all in life. Good job, money, success, a beautiful wife and 2 young boys. He's working on a project for a new drug that will erase traumatic memories. The goal is to use it to treat PTSD in soldiers and police officers who witness horrible things. The drug is nearing clinical trials when his wife and boys are involved in a horrific auto accident resulting in the death of the wife and the oldest boy. As the movie ends, he has stolen some of the drug and has taken it. He is standing looking out the window of his house on a grey rainy day as his youngest boy is playing with his toys on the living room floor behind him. The drug works.... but, not completely.

Your job.... write the song for this scene in the movie. Oh...and it has to be written, recorded, mixed and completed, and turned in within 3 days.

This song was the result and the very song I submitted. It was rejected as being too country when they had asked for a more "indy" genre song.

Another Rainy Day

This is certainly a way to get out of your writing doldrums. It forces you to think and write out of the box and often out of your comfort zone. While this song was turned down, I look at it as a success in writing something for a specific purpose and in a very short deadline.

This song was from 2013.

As best I can remember... guitar was me.... everything else is BB/RB.

Edit: The taxi reviewer on this song asked me in his comments... "man, you wrote this song specifically for this listing didn't you?" I wasn't able to respond to him..... but yeah.... wasn't that what you asked for? He said it was "spot on" for the part but the genre was wrong.

Herb,
Very nice tune and production! Yep, I think you are absolutely right. It is all about experiments and new experience regardless if money/fame is involved or not smile

This is a really good song. The melody line is haunting, and (although there is clear "country" influence in some of the instrument choices and, frankly, in the vocals) the song itself doesn't sound like a country song to me. Unless your version was going in the soundtrack, I think your Taxi reviewer didn't listen hard enough.

I liked the little cut measures both for their economy and for the reboot they give to the groove. What I most like is your impeccable vocal phrasing. Way to sing where.

For the record--I also sing with a southern accent. I can tamp it down for a phrase here and there, but it is what it is. Us southerners also listen to and like other musics too, and most of American music has it's roots "down here", so they can stick it as far as I'm concerned. wink Thanks for this.

BTW, that movie sounds familiar, though I don't think I actually saw it. Did it ever get made?

Has a hint or three of Neil Young.
I like it - their loss.
Good construction and good vocal performance - you did well.

Ember, Misha, Tangmo, Richard, Ray... thanks for listening and the comments.

Tangmo: With 99.9% of the stuff submitted to libraries for use in film and TV, yes, the song submitted is always used in the soundtrack or underscore. They don't have the time or money to record everything or anything again. It goes as submitted. I did protest based on the screener's comment that this was a perfect fit.... so why didn't it get used or submitted to the producer with the comment that it's a perfect fit but the genre is more alt country. The head screener emailed me and reviewed the comments and the song. She sided with the screener that the genre isn't what they had asked for and they didn't want to submit anything that wasn't exactly in line with the producer's original request. OK... I get it. And I understood their reasoning. Give the customer what they asked for and don't try to go outside those lines. Keep the customer happy.

As far as was the movie ever made.... I would assume it was however, in any listing, you rarely get to know the details other than what they tell you regarding the song they need. I've had songs placed into movies and used in TV shows. I never even knew until my BMI royalty statement came in with the check. Even then, I had to log into my BMI account to see the actual use... name of the shows and movies. No library is going to call you to say... hey, we got your song placed into a TV show. They used 7 seconds of your song and you'll be getting a check in a few months for 50 cents. Fortunately, for me.... they used my song in over 70 instances and it was for more than 7 seconds.... well, most of the uses were at least 10 seconds long.

Funny thing.... I still haven't heard not one single cut that they used... I have yet to see any of the shows or the made for TV movies.

What a tune! Superbly catchy, and it really flows beautifully. Your vocals and eloquent and precise, and the lyrics are definitely relatable.

You should be proud of this one - thanks for sharing smile

I'll sum it up

Great write, very good vocals (Neil with a real southern touch)

This is a good song, very enjoyable to listen to

Interesting back story and a nice bookend to Tangmo's Cloudy Day

A good listen. The mix is good. A few too many drum fills, I think.

"...reflect the melancholy mood of the actor"

The song did not give me that sense. There is no "melancholy" in the vocal (nothing wrong with the vocal per se, it just isn't "melancholy"). And the overall feel of the song/production is kind of "peppy". And it has a lot more going on (production-wise) than those indie-feel-end-of-the-movie songs typically have. Might work better without the drums for that purpose - 'cause they are pretty "peppy". (even the dobro has a peppy-feel).

I enjoyed the listen.

Hi Herb,

It is a very good song and a nice production!

Directors and producers in the film industry has their own mind and often very specific ideas about how the music should "sound" for their specific projects - and they are not always good at explaining that.
A rejection doesn't mean that the song is bad... just that it didn't fit that particular producers idea or dream, so don't get discouraged by the rejection.

Guitarhacker,

What a great post . . . I don’t think I could write on demand as you describe. I wrote one song some time back inspired by what I saw in a movie . . . but not sure I could take a scene and write the backing for it.

I don’t know what you were writing for, but this drips with atmosphere and sadness—so much emotion.

It’s the nature of the music business that things are categorized, but this is more than country—it goes beyond genre. Sad and pretty tune. Just great!

My kind regards,

Deej

Very moody and different. Writing on demand is not my forte by any stretch of the imagination. I struggle to simply write much less on demand!

This song definitely has an atmospheric and cinematic feel. Perhaps it will fit a future opportunity.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
