Rust On The Rails A lifetime love of trains lead me (Bud) to attempt the writing of my first autobiographical song. It’s unconventional in many ways but, hey, it’s all about having fun. Yeah, yeah, I know if you’ve gotta explain your song you’re in trouble! But if not familiar with the verse three imagery (and interested) this 28 second video shows what I watched as a kid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UN9GxmtfX90Thank you Janice for your support in my tedious efforts to jam four vignettes over many years into a three minute song Thanks to floyd for the thoughtful and helpful mix counsel and to Noel for our song structure discussions. And as always to PG Music and this community. Oh, and pardon me but I couldn’t resist the SC photo of me at eight years old. We always appreciate your time to listen and comment. Janice & Bud,
This is some incredible Americana... A great song, sung by a great vocalist.
The mix and instrumentation on this song is truly outstanding. So nuanced and layered with rich tones - it is the sound that I think we all have in our heads and try to achieve. Unbelievably good.
You both have raised the bar again...

What a great song, wonderful performance and flawless production. Very well done!
The lyrics reminded me about George Hunters "Train Watching":
"The beast was thundering along, hissing lots of steam And belching black smoke, a young boy's dream. We stood real close, with our jaws all slack, The passing wind near knocked us back.
Golly Gee! That was some sight to behold! I'll probably remember it when I get old."
Thanks a lot for sharing! Will

You two are pros at not only singing and production but at setting up the perfect visuals. These lyrics are outstanding and of course Janice's vocals are fantastic.
This is better than virtually all of the music on today's commercial radio!

It's a very clear sketch of recollections. Almost carries the smells as well. Excellent vocals on top of a very evocative backing.

Hi Janice and Bud,
Melancholic song, performed in an excellent way, or many ways; the clearness of the instruments, the beautiful voice, and the nice lyrics. Makes you longing to yesterday...

You'll have to forgive me for not really recognizing this "song-form". I've got nothing really to compare it to that jumps to mind more-so than 'opera'. What great little pictures laid out on the table in order, full of detail but still a little smokey.
The Band sounds right, and Janice's vocals wrap around these stellar lines punctuating the sense of loss in the telling. Unique to my ears, and a beautiful listen.

What a cool song. I can totally relate to the lyrics in this song as I grew up about a half a block from the tracks. Lots of very dangerous adventures played in those yards. Abandoned buildings, turnarounds for the old steam engines. Stirred up some very old memories.
The backtrack and instrument selection was so perfect for the song. That harmonica boy was it cool.
Janice's voice was absolutely excellent. Such feeling. Such a nice listen. Well done....

Peter Peter said almost everything that crossed my mind as I listened. Every little thing has been polished to perfection. And when Janice sing, who isn't swooned into a universe of smiles? What a great song and equally splendid delivery. WOW! Tip of the proverbial hat to all involved. Alan

J&B, Power Duo! Nothing less than Amazing performance! Listens very well, with all the unusual twists. Harmonica was very good decision on this. Conventional is boring BTW, nice bike! For some years I used to live in Scranton, PA. They have major train museum. If you ever go through, stop by at the center, they have some really cool trains displayed outside, including Big Boy, that you can climb, if no one is watching. P.S. starting 2:55 a few clicks are audible. Thank you for sharing! Misha.

Misha. I don't have the most acute ears! But when I crank it way up on SC I do hear a click or pop. However when listening within Logic Pro X I don't hear it. Perhaps it was introduced when I bounced it down. Thanks for the heads up. I'll try replacing the SC file. And we will respond later to your kind remarks about the song. Bud

Wow - what a tune! Truly outstanding. Love the slow, smoky groove on this and Janice's vocals are stunning on this one. I also loved the cinematic lyricism on this. Makes it easy to close your eyes and really feel the surroundings described. You two should be proud of this one - thanks so much for sharing

Great job.... and yeah, as others have mentioned, the mix is pristine.
A few days ago I was laying a trail for some K9 training and chose a path that took me along a section of the train tracks that bisect the local town. The tracks are still used once a day or so.... but they are rusted along the edges and the cross ties are rotting away.....
This song brings back memories as a kid, we used to live close to the tracks in our town. Trains were much more common then and the station was just a short walk from the house.
I liked this song. Well done.

I think the form is old school pop with verses and a bridge but no chorus. But then we ended up with an odd number of bars in the verses so I don’t know what the heck it is. But we do know that we hugely appreciate your remarks. Your comments about the lyric are very meaningful to me in a confidence building way. Thank you for listening and writing such a supportive review. J&B

Love the opening! Attention grabbing.
An excellent piece of writing. A walk through life.
The instrument choices are a perfect bed to allow the story to be told and the vocal to SHINE... which, of course, it does. Like a lighthouse beacon!! Awesome.
Top shelf through and through.

Really beautiful story, full of vivid imagery of the past world. Great work with harmonica - instrument which has that mournful tone needed for melancholy in this song. Excellent chord progression, especially in the bridge section. Superb mix and vocals.

Unconventional, yes, but not unprofessional!
Janice's vocal is perfect. She and that sweet harmonica bend all the right notes. The mix and the master are flawless.

Bud and Janice,
This is superb! But then, that what we expect from y'all. The mix is really nice. Janice's vocals shine as always. The harmonica is a really nice touch.
Well done!
Steve
Thank you Steve. Glad the harp seemed to work. I had a lot of doubts! J&B

Great story J&B! That harmonica really brings the listener right in! A beautiful full sound with the excellent vocal by Janice! Perfect to my ears in every respect! Thanks, Torrey Thanks Torrey, I think that’s the first time I’ve ever used a harmonica RT. Glad you liked the production J&B

Janice & Bud,
The first thing that stands out is the clarity and sound - beautiful work on the mix & production.
Janice - as usual is superb, with lovely feeling in the vocal, evocative lyrics, some masterful story telling, and also a nice album cover photo.
The harmonica sounds excellent and was a great choice for the song.
Wonderful.
Peter Peter said almost everything that crossed my mind as I listened. Every little thing has been polished to perfection. And when Janice sing, who isn't swooned into a universe of smiles? What a great song and equally splendid delivery. WOW! Tip of the proverbial hat to all involved. Alan Al, those comments put smiles on our faces! Thank you. J&B

Misha. Thanks Misha for the very nice supportive review! glad you liked the bike. The irony is that now at an advanced age I spend 4-5 days a week on a bike Would love to climb on the Big Boy! I mentioned in another follow-up post that the clicks were apparently a function of the bounce down or the upload to SC. Thanks for noting. And they should be gone by now. J&B

This is embarrassing but I've listened to this song SO many times and could have sworn I commented! I am very sorry for that; and I totally dig the song and concept! Give me a day or two and I'll be commenting.
I have to say, the "green dot" saved me on this one!
Comments are coming...:)

Wow! The musical opening sets the tone well. I knew where this train was headed with those notes and instrumentation. Most excellent imagery all around. I especially liked "the conductor’s circled by colored dots from his punch." Beautiful vocal!

Wow - what a tune! Truly outstanding. Love the slow, smoky groove on this and Janice's vocals are stunning on this one. I also loved the cinematic lyricism on this. Makes it easy to close your eyes and really feel the surroundings described. You two should be proud of this one - thanks so much for sharing Dreyk. your mention of cinematic is much appreciated as it suggests that our attempts at the imagery worked. Thank you for all the comments! J&B

Well done. Thanks Herb for all and for mentioning the mix.. We bike ride occasionally on Rails To Trails which are old RR beds converted to trails. Some are over a hundred miles long. There plans to eventually have one across the US. Glaf you like it. We both love trains especially steam engines. J&B

Love the opening! Attention grabbing.
An excellent piece of writing. A walk through life.
The instrument choices are a perfect bed to allow the story to be told and the vocal to SHINE... which, of course, it does. Like a lighthouse beacon!! Awesome.
Top shelf through and through.
fj Thank you the the nice review and for the golden fj counsel on the mix. We very much appreciate your comment on the write! J&B

Really beautiful story, full of vivid imagery of the past world. Great work with harmonica - instrument which has that mournful tone needed for melancholy in this song. Excellent chord progression, especially in the bridge section. Superb mix and vocals.
Janne Thanks Janne. We appreciate you noting the chord progression on the bridge. That was Janice's idea. And thanks also for mentioning the harmonica. It was comped up from many tracks. J&B

Unconventional, yes, but not unprofessional!
Janice's vocal is perfect. She and that sweet harmonica bend all the right notes. The mix and the master are flawless.
"...taper into distant pines"
This is a solid and vivid write, Bud. Well done. We both very much appreciate that...every word of it! Thanks for mentioning the write and use of the harmonica. J&B Janice & Bud,

J&B,
All the good things already said about this song get better with repeat listens. Its a fine use of an underused song form and the vocal is stunningly good. Up there with your best!
btw I loved the steamtrains still running nearby our house in the 50`s -brings shivers to think of them appearing from a tunnel. oh, and you had a pretty nice bike!

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
