It just won't load now. I've reinstalled. It was working perfectly all day, but then I had a crash (access violation) in BIAB 2010, (I think that one has trouble if you've frozen a RB soloist track), and now RealBand comes up but then freezes, where you can't even load a file. Aaaaargh! I love being part of the paid Beta team. NOT!!!

Please throw me a bone here. I'll be happy to read I've done something horribly wrong and this is just a big user error.

One more thing. I'm also noticing that the cursor is an hourglass when dragged over the main RealBand screen, after attempting to load the program. No matter how long I wait no buttons function or song files load after setting the drivers and giving it the VSC DXi as a default synth. It actually does not seem to matter which settings I give it there either.

Rename RB.cfg or move it to another folder

then start program (it will force the file to be recreated ..)

see if that helps

Wait, It also didn't regenerate that file. Was that the one in the RB folder, or is there another one?

But forget it, it is there, but the fix still didn't work.

I appreciate the effort.

Did you have RB fully closed down when you moved or deleted that file?

If not, it was still working off of the old one.

That may be why you didn't see a new one the first shot...

Yes, unfortunately I did. Just went through it again, just to make dead sure. Still nothing.

There are other files that may be involved.

In particular:

REALBAND.INI. This file contains most of the global RealBand settings, especially the settings in the Options | Preferences and Options | MIDI Devices dialogs. It also has a list of the most recently accessed song files.

And so you'll know about the first one:

RB.CFG. This file contains information about your sound card

The two files above contain most of your program settings; it is usually only necessary to delete those two files to return RealBand to "Factory Settings".

Well. It was neither of those two fixes. . . sort of frustrating, but I'll call PG today if somoen here doesn't suggest the fix before they open.

I don't know why it does it, but on my computer, when I first install RealBand, and then launch it, it seems to take a very ,very long time before it responds. It seems to just hang.

But if I just let it sit and complete (and this may take 5 or more minutes - grab a cup of coffee), it works just fine after that. Don't know what it's looking for, but it obviously is getting hung up on something. Maybe some timeout code needs have a reduced time.

Maybe you already did it, but I would just let it sit for awhile. I know I got impatient and thought is was just hung, and went through the whole deleting of config files, as well as re-installing several times, before I just let it sit there. And then it worked fine and loads quickly.

Does it give you an hourglass and tell you the program is "not responding" when you take a look at what's open with control, alt, delete?

Hi, Jeff -

Yours might be a different problem, but i just wanted to share my experience since it sounded somewhat similar.

You said you re-installed. Did you remove the original folder or just re-install over the original? I might would try re-installing to a completely different folder.

Did you install to C:\Program Files? If you are running Vista or Win7, I would avoid doing that, because the OS doesn't like changes to configuration files there.

Do you have a number of DirectX effect or DXi synths? It might be getting hung up reading those from the registry. I'm not in front of my machine, but maybe running DXDIAG (I think that's the program) and see if there are any problems, or even if you could exclude a number of effects/synths temporarily.

Just some thoughts.

Whew, Okay I got it. Turns out it was none of those things, but a reboot of the system has fixed it, at least for now.

Thanks for all of the help.

I'm so used to rebooting fairly often, especially after installing new software, that I don't even think about it. Yes, a reboot is often the easy 5 minute answer to days of aggravation.

I'm glad you got it sorted out, Jeff. Let us know when you've got some music to share.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
