Hi there,

I have been looking at the Ketron SD3 online and just wonder if anyone has used it here, or is it of any benefit to a guitar player, or would he/she need a midi guitar to avail of the sounds within?

I take it the unit can also work well, as a default synth is band in a box similar to the SD2?

Many thanks for any info.

Hi Martin

I know many folk on here use the SD2 and it is well thought of.
It will give you a nice set of midi voices for sure, so if you want midi backing tracks for your guitar playing it could be good.
The Ketron unit works as an external mid synth in BIAB, and will send its sound as audio this will need to be fed to your sound card audio in, or audio interface in if you want to hear it on the pc.
Alternatively you could feed it to a spare clean channel on your guitar amp if you are using electric guitar.
Have fun
Mike

Hi Martin,

As Mike said the SD3 is an external MIDI synth. Thus it needs a MIDI input and the output is audio. As Mike indicated BiaB is the MIDI input and the SD3 output needs to go to your sound card or audio interface input. This should work well as a BiaB external GM synth.

If you want to access the SD3 sounds without using or using along with BiaB you will need some kind of MIDI input device. This could be a MIDI keyboard controller, wind controller, guitar MIDI controller etc. Thus a regular guitar will not access those sounds, you would need a MIDI controller like the Fishman TriplePlay added to your guitar.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Thanks guys for the information.

In the past I have seen a guy playing with some sort of pedals that he used to change chords on backing tracking that accompanied his singing, didn't have time to go into detail with him but it has intrigued me ever since, what exactly his setup was.

So it seems the SD 3 doesn't have any sort of backing tracks on board, and even if using a midi controller like a midi guitar, it would be more of a single sound that you would get from it rather than a nice backing track.

Just wondering if I am correct in assuming this?

Thanks yet again.
Martin

Martin, are you using BiaB for your backing tracks? If so what are you using for your sound source? If it is the softsynth that comes with BiaB then the SD3 would be a big improvement in sound quality.

You are correct in thinking that using a MIDI controller will not produce a backing track. You can get more than one sound if your MIDI controller can send out multiple MIDI channels as in splitting a keyboard for 2 or more zones or having a guitar MIDI controller that will send out 6 different MIDI channels. But even then it would not be a backing track, just different channels playing different notes.

Seems like a fun toy Beatmaster, wouldn't mind having one.

Mario, I am using just the standard synthfont64 that comes with band in a box.

The SD3 is quite expensive, I have seen the sd2 at a fraction of the cost, though no doubt the 3 will be a better unit.

Will keep an eye on ebay just in case any come up.

Thanks again.
Martin

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
