I couldn’t believe when I read Mambo No. 5 from Deryk. Then I had to look at the link. I see it’s NOT the Perez Prado song from the late 40s that made a large impression on me. This one is pretty terrible, agreed. Haha! I definitely had never heard the Perez Prado song, so thank you for that. All the more frustrating what Lou Bega did to the song's title. See, if more people associated it with the Perez Prado tune it might have a better rep. Thanks for introducing that by the way - definitely a genre of music I don't dabble in much but I enjoyed the tune a lot.

You’re welcome, Derek. The genre isn’t quite dead; I played that tune in concert a few months ago. When I was four, my father returned from Cuba with a Perez Prado record. I played that just as much as I played Ten Little Indians and the like (if you’ve even heard of that - children’s music). It explains why someone named Finley plays Latin and Brazilian jazz. There are two CDs you might like. One is Tomas Martin Lopez “On the Beat Path”. I wrote eight of the songs and used BIAB to do it. The second is my CD called Brazilian Wish, all nine Brazilian jazz songs I wrote using BIAB. Both are studio recordings with top NYC pros, but I used BIAB to give everyone an idea of the songs before we hit the studios.

This one is pretty terrible, agreed. Not the same song, but.. I bought "The Best of Perez Prado" when I was in college, mainly to get "Patricia", but also "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White". On that album was Prado's "Mambo #5". I bought Lou Bega's album when it came out to get his "Mambo #5" . I liked the tune and the arrangement. The lyrics made me smile. The party sound reminded me of Gary U.S. Bond's "Quarter to Three", a #1 from the 1960's. There are nearly 240 million views of Bega's official video on youtube. (I'm not a video guy, but it is IMO well done.) Matt, Lou Bega's song IS derived from Prado's "Mambo #5". If you listen to Prado's track, starting at about 2:20, you will hear the theme that was the genesis of Bega's song. I recognized this when I first heard the song, before I heard the title. (I thought it was "A Little Bit of Monica".) I gave Bega props for crediting Perez Prado, in an era when it was commonplace for rappers to steal (IMO) parts of songs, uncredited. I didn't care for Bega's Mambo #5 the first time I heard it. I had been playing the original Perez Prado version for a few years, the Cuban audience here in South Florida appreciated it for it's history and it reminded them so much of their homeland.
Then the Retirement crowd latched on to the Bega verson, we had to play it again and again and again and again which we of course did at the best of our ability and with as much enthusiasm as we do all our songs, but I must say I'm happy when songs like that go away to become passe.
The Bega arrangement isn't a Mambo BTW, but it borrows melody from the Prado song, so at lest the Prado estate got royalties.
While we are at it, let me add, Cupid Shuffle, Achy Breaky Heart and Alley Cat to the songs that had their day in the sun but are now passe.
But if someone requests them, we'll do our best.
The worst thing about a tired song is calling it. It's a mental thing. Once the music starts, the sax or wind synth is in my mouth or the guitar in my hands, I forget the song is worn out and have a good time playing it in spite of myself.

Actually, I LIKE a couple of these, though even a pretty good song can be ruined by too much repetition. That's pretty much what drove me away from country radio. I didn't like Achey Breaky Heart the first time I heard it, but it took 972 additional plays before I ripped the dial off the radio. But a ton of people DID like it, so who's to say I'm right (expect me).
I love Roy Orbison. One of my favorite Orbison tracks is "Heartbreak Radio", a cut from an album issued after Orbison's death. The song was a major hit in Europe. I don't know if it was ever released as a single in the US. "Heartbreak Radio" was written by J.D. Souther, who wrote some hits for the Eagles, including "New Kid in Town". He also had a million selling single with his recording of "You're Only Lonely". "Achy Breaky Heart" always seemed familiar to me. It is a simple tune, but I couldn't place it. After about 5 years (I'm quite slow), it hit me. I was astonished at the tune's similarity to the more complex "Heartbreak Radio". I've never seen anyone comment on what has always seemed like a lawsuit to me, because of the similarity and the huge amounts of money involved. Maybe there was an out of court settlement. (See the Katy Perry thread.) "Heartbreak Radio" was released in 1992. "Achy Breaky Heart" in 1993. TIP: If you decide to listen to "Heartbreak Radio", use headphones. You will be rewarded.
