I am trying to enter F5Maj7 but with no luck. Can someone explain how I enter this chord please.

When I play it in Logic playing F C E it displays as F5Maj7, I assume this is correct?

Hi TryUK,

To be honest, I've never heard of an F5maj7 chord before and I've played a lot of music over the years. Many software programs these days do their best to analyse chords and these programs end up arriving at names that are descriptive rather than a correct chord interpretation. This might be the case here. I can certainly create the F5maj7 from the name even though it's not part of my chord vocabulary.

That said, BIAB does not recognise such a chord. It would be possible to use F5 or Fmaj7 as alternatives. I'd use whichever sounded best in the harmonic texture that you have.

To guarantee that the chord plays, I suggest that you disable the "Natural Arrangements" feature for this song. That option is found in "Song Settings" -- right click on the chord sheet and select -- and there is an on/off checkbox to deactivate it.

All the best,
Noel

Hi Noel, I don't have a very wide knowledge of chords beyond the basics M m 7 sus etc. I think you are correct in that Logic is just trying to work out what the chord actually is and failing. I found that F5 seems to sound the same so have used that in its place. I probably should invest in a decent chord book, as occasionally I find a chord I know nothing about. Thanks for your help.

Tim.

Tim,

I have found PG Music's +++ Piano Chord Dictionary +++ and +++ Guitar Chord Dictionary +++ to be good investments. What I like is each has a "reverse" chord feature where I can provide the fingerings on the piano keyboard or guitar fretboard and the program will display the proper chord name. The one down side I've found is the guitar chord dictionary does not support alternate tunings,

Another thought is you may want to explore the 2019 Band-in-a-Box Chord Builder Tool. You can open the Chord Builder Tool by pressing Ctrl + Shift + B or selecting the Chord Builder Icon in the Tools Bar.

Thanks Jim. I have used the Chord builder in the past. I checked the link for the Piano Chord Dictionary but it appears only to be available for Windows.

F5 is generally a shorthand for a power chord (1st and 5th), but technically isn't a chord at all (only two notes) but it's still supported (unembellished) by BIAB. I think what you have would probably be better notated as Fmaj7(no3), but alas BIAB doesn't support it. I might would try just using an F5 chord, and have either the soloist or melody instrument play the missing E.

John beat me to it; I would call your notes a Maj7(no 3rd)

Hello guys. I have a similar problem. Sometimes I can't enter the chord I wish. Could someone please tell me how to enter the following chords? (That's how I would name them, the notes and the degree in the key of C)

G7add13 g-d-f-b-e (V)
G7add13b g-d-f-b-eb (V)
Fmaj9/5b f-a-e-g-b (IV)

Thanks a lot!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
