try using F5. You can change almost everything by bar

Try this:
Select the correct bar, and press Function Key <F5>.
It will bring up a menu and allow you to change the instrument patch for each track. Note that you cannot change from MIDI to RealTracks this way, and must keep the same track type, but you can change the instrument.
BTW: Welcome Back!

Thank you. I have done that. I've put the patch num in, but then when I try to play the tune it just sails past that bar still using the same instrument that it started with.

Thanks for the welcome back. I've had the program for years but not had a chance to get into it. Nursed my wife with quadriplegic motor neurone disease for 8 years followed by a future 3 years of my own illness. Now all I want is to be able to change melody/solo instrument within a tune and have it remember the change. I can do it by saving as a midi file and transferring to a sequencer type program with event edit; but i want BIAB to be able to do it. Thank you for your help.

Clive, if you had frozen the tracks previously then the change won't work unless you unfreeze the track before making the change with the <F5> function.

Please tell us the complete sequence of steps you are using, what you are attempting to change to, etc. Advising every little step can really help to track down where things might be going awry.

I am wondering if 2012 had the 'F5' or freezing. Can't remember that far back. Do you need to regenerate (or the 2012 equivalent) to make it work?

I'm pretty sure that the ability to freeze tracks was available in the 2012 version.

I think so, too.

Hi, Yes I can freeze but they are not frozen. I've managed to make 2 short screen videos showing exactly what. I can put the links to my dropbox in now but perhaps its safer to send the links by email. First one shows me loading it in (including the preferences) and then plays it wih no 12 (vibes) on ch 4. Then I highlight bar 3 and hit F5. In that panel I then change ch4 to 20 (church organ) hit return when the panel closes .... (is there no way to put higher patches in at this point ?? ). Tune plays again put patch does not change to 20 like it should. The midi settings show ch4 on 20. This next bit I found by accident. If I now save the song as a standard midi file and then play the BIAB screen again, without changing anything .... then hey presto it plays both instruments at the right time. Clearly I can not be saving a new midi file every time I make a small change. All very strange. My 83 yr old hair is already falling out so I can well do without this. :-)

Clive, you may need to regenerate after making the <F5> patch change. It was not clear if you were doing this. Can you try?

Thank you for your time. I can now do 4changes of instrument within 8 bars but I have to save as midi each time. I let it save to clipboard and carry on. It remembers each time. I think I will upgrade from build 52 to 62 if I can. It has a full event editor, which would make things simpler in quite a few ways. Thank you to all who have been helping ... sadly none of them worked. I can now do what I wanted by this devious method but an upgrade to an event editor would be a better solution. Thak you once again and best wishes.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
