As I write this, the first misty rain is starting to fall and the storm still sets off the coast near Charleston. According to predictions, we are supposed to be in the tropical storm wind area... 30 to 40 mph with anywhere from a half inch to 4" of rain.

We have everything as secured as we can be, generator tested yesterday and the gas cans and tanks all topped off.

Now we wait.

Here on Hatteras Island in eastern NC its starting to breeze up a bit.

The outer bands of rain should be here soon.

Don't think we'll be fishing for a few days.

We're having the strongest winds and hardest rain we've had yet. We're about 35 miles inland from N. Myrtle Beach where they've had tornados and flooding. We've had less than an inch of rain so far but the rain is picking up now too. We live out in farm country but one of our closest neighbors 100 year old two story colonial wooden home burned to the ground over the last few hours. We could see and smell the smoke and had hot embers landing in our yard. So Sad.

They started taking donations for the Bahama Islands boat-lift today.

I had an 8' x 10' cabin tent we haven't used it a couple of years. I figured someone without a home needs it more than I do so I donated it. I added an ice chest cooler, I have two (or had two).

I also bought and donated a giant 30 roll pack of toilet paper, a case of canned Vienna sausage, a 20 pack of D cell batteries, and a large pack of plastic garbage bags.

They should be on their way to the Bahamas tomorrow morning.

The newspaper listed a large number of drop off points, When I got to the closest pickup center to my house there were about a half dozen cars with other folks also donating food and goods. It's nice to see so many Floridians extending a helping hand. We all may be only giving a little each, but together we can make a difference.

I saw on the news the Freeport Bahamas airport runways are cleared with a US Navy ship controlling air traffic to and from the runways. Freeport also has the only hospital still able to operate at this time. US Coast Guard helicopters have been going to some of the more remote Bahama islands delivering the first wave of relief supplies while returning with injured.

The government of the Bahamas has done an excellent job trying to keep the world informed with frequent press conferences and updates. I'm very impressed with how well it has handled the disaster so far.

Instead of a flotilla, the donations were so generous that my tent and other gifts are going on a barge pulled by a tugboat. They should get there in less than 24 hours.

The outpouring of the people here in South Florida is heartwarming. Each of us with our small contributions have contributed more than the original organized flotilla could handle. We have donated an entire ocean-going barge full.

If you don't have anything to give or a close drop-off point, consider a donation to a bona fide charity like the Re Cross if you want to help.

For those who might be curious about Dorian's effect on the NC coast, here's a link to a page full of beach cams, mostly on the outer banks. Dorian traced the NC coast, so all of these webcams that are still working will show current views of the beach (and in many cases, piers.)

SO.... update on Friday.

2" of rain, a little breezy, no limbs or trees down. Power never blinked. Sun is out and the sky is blue.

The coast is still going through the shredder.

Storm's been gone for almost 2 days.
The eye passed right over us here on Hatteras Island.
That was an experience
Leading up to the eyewall arrival the wind was all south and not particularly hard.30 knots maybe. Gusty but nothing over 40-50.
Breezed harder 50-60 as the eye arrived.
Then it was an eerie calm for 30 minutes. All of us who stayed ventured outside to see how the sound had retreated hundreds of yards. All the canals in my village were bone dry.

Then the north wind came with a vengeance. It blew HARD north/northwest for 3-4 hours
The backside (north/northwest) was by far the worst and caused most of the wind and water damage. Water was mostly soundside flooding. Some folks (especially Hatteras Village and Ocracoke) got hit pretty hard. Hearts go out to them.

We were mostly spared. Lost a tree but it hit nothing coming down. 50 or so shingle tabs broken.

Lost power for about 36 hours. No big drama. Bar-b-que with neighbors.
Apparently the road (NC12) didn't get beat up too bad.
We're out helping neighbors.
Getting ready to bring the boats back from their hiding spaces.
Get back to chasing wahoo and playing a little guitar.

I reckon they will allow tourists back tomorrow.
Life on the sandbar slowly going forward.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
