although the track is midi and fretless bass selected, some notes seem to play on a piano patch

how do i upload a file so you can see what I mean?

when i switch synths from the edirol hypercanvas to the forte dxi plug in the piano notes don't play at all

somehow generating a midi track isn't working quite right. i created a seq file using a friend's mp3 of one of his songs and although the acw seemed to get the chords right adding a midi bass seems to have gone wrong

i have a file with just the strange bass on to upload - is there a channel problem? (my only guess so far!)

Some thing to consider
If you have the same mid channel on different tracks the last patch read, as the file progresses is the one that plays on all tracks sharing that channel.
At the start of play the highest number track will be the patch used, until or unless it receives another patch on the same channel.
So that seems a likely scenario . the problem is it would happen on the all GM synths.

The other time it can happen is if the receiving synth did not recognise the incoming patch or bank change sent from a channel at anytime regardless of track sent on, it normally defaults to MSB000 LSB000 Patch 0 which is piano.

Another possibility would be patch changes in the bar settings F5 in you song file.

Hope this is some help
Mike

Yes
I would first check the bass track's Event List for any events with a different MIDI channel than the rest (look in the location where the sound changes in the song).

If everything appears to be on the same channel, are there any Program Changes occurring?
The tricky part is that any of these events could happen on any track with MIDI.

The MIDI Monitor can help check all tracks at the location where the oddity occurs, but it takes a little getting used to.

It sounds like somewhere the bass notes either change MIDI channel (and thus use a different sound) or a Program Change is changing the sound assigned to that MIDI channel.
If you have (for sure) narrowed it down to a single track then the MIDI Monitor shouldn't be needed, just look on that track's Event List to track it down.

Hi

It seems your chosen synth uses one based patch numbers 1 - 128 Yamaha and some Roland do this.
Normal mid patch numbering is Zero based patch numbers 0 -127.

see Patch Select Dialog

Mike, if memory serves correctly, using zero (in certain screens) means RB doesn't assign the channel; it lets the MIDI handle it .. so various tracks in RB can have this setting set to zero and still use different MIDI channels (RB is not controlling them, the MIDI is).

I think his solution involved forcing RB to use a given MIDI channel for that track (selecting 1).
This would over-ride other MIDI channel commands for that track .. so we still don't know the true source of the problem, but we now know the solution that worked for him.

yes - from channel 0 to 1 was a quick and dirty fix but i did look at the event list just now. the bass is on channel 13 in the list and the wrong sounds are on channel 14 - but as it was a midi track generated by RB using a chord chart from acw and one of the very old built in midi styles (Literok) from BIAB i'm stumped as to why RB inserted channel changes

in fact when i checked further on the channel changes included channel 12 as well - there were lots of 12s and 14s peppered throughout the list. any idea why? i've never had problems generating midi tracks before.

Hi Bob

If you upload your original midi file to your Microsoft one drive make it shareable and post the link here we should be able to down load it.
Alternatively you could use Google drive.
Or send me a pm and I will send you my email address and you can attach the file to a email to me.
I will have a look at it.
Mike

Hi Bob
Just a final thought on this.
As you say the midi was derived from a Biab file it may throw some light.

If you Save song as special / save as midi file, from a BIAB SGU / MGU you will save patch settings in any tracks at any bar, that they were set with F5 bar settings to change patch.
In BIAB you can tell if there are bar settings at a bar by a red _ underscore under the bar number of a bar.
You can print or view a summary of these with the “print summary” button bottom left of the F5 settings window. This will give you a text file.

EG,
**** Band-in-a-Box Report of Changes in the song at any bar ******
Song Title is: Ben, File Name is C:\Users\Mike Head\Music\My BIAB Songs\mike ben.MGU [Sat, 09 Jan 2016 15:17:30]
Bar 25: All Choruses,Piano 2, Patch Change = 12 Vibes

Bar 30: All Choruses,Piano 2, Patch Change = 12 Vibes

Bar 34: All Choruses,Piano 2, Patch Change = 1 Acoustic Piano

You will have to refer back to the original sgu in BIAB to find which tracks contain the patch changes by viewing the bar settings for the effected bar . the channels used for the mixer tracks can be seen under Options/Preferences/Channels this uses the generic track names!

Mike

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
