I find it difficult to hear my metronome. Is it possible to increase its volume independent of track volume?

I prefer to make a single bar of MIDI with a quarter note on the sidestick (note # 37 on channel 10 for GM synths)
set velocity to 127 (full)
Then you can copy that one measure and paste it however many bars your song is.
That way you can make it as loud as you want .. even add PGPeakLimit to it and make it excruciatingly loud ..
wink

RealDrums count-ins are part of the audio associated with RealDrums. RealBand allows access to the audio in the two bars labeled -2 & -1 in the timeline. You can adjust the volume or use an insert effect to make the two bar count-in louder.

MIDI metronome settings are available under "Options" > "Preferences ..." or Control + F5 > "9 Metronome". The midi metronome volume already defaults to the maximum volume level of 127 so there is no relief there. But you can change the midi drum instrument note from the default of 42 (F#3), closed hi-hat, to a more aggressive sounding midi drum instrument note.

One other note concerning the above 2 suggestions.
Adding an effect (like PGPeaklimit) to boost the volume will act on the whole synth, so ALL MIDI assigned to that synth may be louder as a result.

This is why I create a MIDI click track as described in my earlier post.
That way I can assign that track to it's own instance of the desired synth and thus make only that click track louder when using PGPeakLimit (or other methods of boosting the volume). Other instances of the same synth remain unaffected.

Another way would be to generate said click to it's own audio track, which allows some other options, like the Trim in the FX area. Still need an original MIDI click track to do so, as described in my first post .. Lots of ways to skin a cat, just explaining why I use mine.

I want to be able to control just the click track and affect no other tracks with the changes. So I usually opt to take the 2 minutes and make my own click track.

To be honest I created a 100 bar MIDI track and saved it as click.mid long ago.
Now I can import that .mid file into my RB projects (Load Scrap function), and because it is MIDI it will adjust to the tempo map of the song and end up on it's own track. Then I have all above mentioned options open to me.
I can post a link to my click.mid file, but it's easy enough to create your own if needed.
Start a new project, enter 4 quarter note events for the first measure of the song (using the desired MIDI channel/note), copy that whole measure, then paste it at the very beginning of the next measure and put '100' in the repetitions box, click OK then save it as click.mid .. done.

FWIW I've found that by converting the click to audio I can usually get the click loud enough to make even the most challenging client wince.

"it's not loud enough" .. (turn it up)
"it's not loud enough" .. (turn it up another way)
"it's not loud enough" .. (convert to audio, compress it and PeakLimit it)

"DUDE; turn it down!"
(giggle)

Hi rharv,
Thank you for the very useful information. It seems that RealaBand designers have included a very lot of of helpful features in the DAW but seems to fundamentally lack in one of the most basic requirements for musical composition.

One anomaly (probably my fault) came up when I tried to create the click trick you alluded to.

I created the 4 beat bar as you outlined. I made the velocity of beats 2, 3 and 4 less than beat 1 so that beat 1 would be easy to distinguish.

However, when I copied the bar using the 'repeat feature' I noticed the velocities were incorrect on the copied bars. The strong beat was followed but just 2 weaker beats before the strong beat came in again. It looked like 3/4 rather than 4/4.

If I copy one bar at a time by moving the insertion point to the start of the intended destination then all is OK.

I'm sure this is something I am doing wrong but I would be grateful for any opinion.

I've never noticed that, and I'm off to the studio for a few hours, not sure when I could try to replicate.

I've possibly never noticed it is because typically I make them all the same volume.
I just want to hear the click .. I know where '1' is (grin).

You can find metronome loops readily availbe for use online and add it as a loop track. The closest to a proper "4-on-the-floor" loop, which comes packaged with BiaB and that I find very usable for this purpose, is:

Loop: Metronome\Electronic\Trance - dancelikeme_135_a ev16

It's more of an electronic kick than a click track, but it works.

Note that the tempo will stretch by default, but if you want more volume on it relative to the other tracks you can easily accomplish that by setting the decibel offset to a positive value of your choice.

Hope that helps :-)

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
