Late Night

A little something I put together on my laptop while Di was going through a long series of tests at the hospital not too long ago. I spent about two hours with it at the hospital and then another hour or so with it when I got home. I just now found enough time to post it. It's a Smooth Jazz saxophone instrumental with a touch of 70s R&B. This was a pretty quick throw-together ... hope it sounds at least halfway decent. Not much spit & polish on this one ... right of the chord input page to Audacity - to Soundcloud - to the PG Forum.

Will visit as many folks as I can over the next couple of days.

Also, I think it's worth mentioning that Mark Douthit is the reference sax player on the track. He shares in any accolades the sax track might garner. Without his foundation, this track would never have happened.

Mr. David...

Late Night is as radio-ready an example of what makes 'smooth jazz' so smooth as I've ever heard in this forum cool.

The Real Style and Real Tracks establish the dreamy, eyes closed, cheek-to-cheek mood with the help of your lush chord choices rolled out at just the ideal tempo. The 'lectric piano notes, the ocean-of-sound synth pad, and the mark tree fills create the musical equivalent of Nirvana. The tenor sax solo curls itself around the ensemble in an unhurried, mellow and timeless way that speaks of a romance that enjoins the past, the present and the future into one beautiful forever.

Barry White would've loved to lay down one of his signature deep-voiced, cuddly vocal tracks on this one, I'm sure smile.

Ms. Di, your man's music must be good medicine for your ears, your heart, and your soul...

Hi Alan,

How smooth, smooth, smooth is that sax! When it started playing in the intro, not only did you capture my imagination but you gave me tingles up and down my spine.... goosebumps rose shortly after. What a sound!

This is a sensational listen.

I love your arrangement. You really are THE MASTER of chord progressions. One chord elegantly turns into another and then another and the journey of harmony is like drifting down a slow flowing river on a late summer afternoon.

As I'm sitting here listening, I keep on thinking over and over just how very talented you are. Exquisite music like this is never an accident. Thank you for posting it and making my day.

How is Di? Rarely a day goes by when I don't think about you both and send healing thoughts your way. I sincerely hope that you and she are travelling as well and as comfortably as possible. Please say "Hello" to her from me.

Kind regards and all the best,
Noel

Loren ...

First, thank you very much for such a wonderful review. I've so seldom had the opportunity to post in recent months. Sometimes I feel a bit guilty when I post a new one as I often don't have enough time to properly answer everyone's review. But, taking care of Di and the mundane, daily requirements of life's obligations consume considerable amounts of time and constitute the priority on my daily schedule.

Reading your reviews, not just those you graciously offer my music, but all your reviews, is like reading a well-composed and utterly sophisticated story or poem. There's a non-frivolous flair to your compositions that is engaging and a true pleasure to read.

You mentioned Barry White. He also came to my mind as started my final (actually, only) edit for this song. I also considered the voices of Lou Rawls and, to a lesser but still significant degree, Joe Jackson. Lew Rawls' song "You'll Never Find" kept coming to mind, although the character of that song much different than this one. Yet, the timbre and resonance of his voice sounded like a good fit.

Again, many serious thank yous for your kindness and the time you give my music.

Alan

G'Day, Noel!

You are always so very kind with your comments. You know how to keep an old guy's spirits high! The analogies and similes you use in your comments/reviews always leave me admiring your composition skills. Thank you so very much for those very kind and encouraging words ... they truly mean a lot. You are gifted composer and arranger. Your praise of my work is one of the most significant fires that keeps burning in the pit of my musical fibre. Thank you for those sparks!

Di has undergone so many tests, medicinal trials and various therapies that my calculator would fry if I attempted to number them. But she's a trooper ... she's hanging in there, although she is physically and mentally exhausted. She's having minor surgery on Tuesday and six more appointments between now and the 20th of October. She's currently taking 17 medicinal pills/capsules/tablets daily plus to injections in her stomach weekly. She's been on that regimen for about a year now. I appreciate you asking about her as does she. Your kindness and thoughts are encouraging to both of us.

Wishing you everything good, my friend ...

Alan & Di

G'Day, Rob!

Thank you so much for the very nice comments ... sure do appreciate them. This was a pretty quick composition and I guess it turned out okay from what you and the others have had to say about it.

I have to admit that I, too, was shocked ... in the most pleasant of ways ... when that sax played back. I couldn't have asked for more. Everything else just fell in place behind it. The only track I had a little difficulty finding was the main drum track. I'm still not perfectly happy with it, but I could find no other track sounded better ... I tired a total of 13 other tracks before settling on this one.

Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for letting me know.

Wishing the very best ...

Alan

PS: Di has been doing reasonably good in the recent two weeks or so. Although she feels noticeably better, she's still confined to bed the majority of the time. I'll let her know you asked. She will appreciate that a lot. I do, too!

What a great listen! You are SO good at these...

Your instrumentals always seem to "tell a story".

That sax is really amazing and you have mixed it superbly. Enjoyable relaxing chord progression, and the arrangement is perfect with mark tree etc. Professional sounding all the way.

Beautiful smooth and sumptious...easy to float away on that sax.
Extraordinarily good production, especially considering the circumstances you worked in.
All the best.

Hi Floyd ...

Thank you very much. Sure do appreciate the nice review! I particularly enjoyed your comment that my instrumentals often "tell a story". I believe that's would a decent instrumental should do. The character and intonation of the instruments, along with their placement and blend, should have some coherence that wanders through a progressive movement. I'm not sure I expressed that well, but I hope you get the idea of what i was trying to say.

Again, many thanks! Wishing you & yours the very best ...

Alan

Hi Dave!

So great to hear from you! I'm delighted you enjoyed your listen. Sometimes these things just pop into my head and I try to translate them to a coherent and interesting sound. It's quite pleasing to know that sometimes I get it right!

Many thanks, my friend. Di says "Hi!" and appreciates your thought.

Good Evening, Robert ...

Thank you for the listen and the very warm comments regarding the song. There is never a complicated set of steps in my mixing and arranging. Audacity is the closest thing I have to a DAW. I do almost everything on the chord input page them move it over to Audacity for a little massaging and that's about it. The mixing and mastering programs everyone talks about totally baffle me. I'm primarily a guitar player and a when-all-else-fails vocalist. the engineering side of it is a foreign language to me! But I do work very hard on the songs before I finish them on the chord input page.

Again, many thanks ...

Alan

Skipped right over you, Scott ... sorry! Some day you'll be old and you'll understand!!!

Glad you enjoyed it! Well, I do compose in multiple genres. I guess that's because I like almost all genre's of music and they all speak me in their on peculiar ways. I sometimes change genres in midstream!

I've always enjoyed Jazz, particularly Smooth Jazz. Glad it's making a bit of a mark with you. Wishing you well, my friend ...

Yep, sax to the max.
it plays well over the changes and bed you created.
there was a time in the 80s when sax was everywhere in pop rock.
Well done.

Wow - what a tune! Delightfully smooth, and the groove is phenomenal. It flows like butter and makes for a really enticing listen. The sax really pushes it along nicely, and I like how sparkly the backing instrumentation sounds.

You should be proud of this one. Thanks for sharing smile

This song exemplifies the power of Biab in the hands of a talented user.

The best compliment we can give is that it sounds like a great "gig honed" band.

An amazing use of realtracks as you selected tracks that sound so "together' both rhythmically and melodically.

Smoooth, smooth, smooth......

Best to both of you!

J&B

PS We would play to see that band.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
