LYRICS

She's famous for steep, wooded valleys
Mountains and cool, rushing streams
But she couldn't hold me, something just told me
To follow my dreams
Waved goodbye to my family
Who didn't quite understand
I drove away, straight to LA
To play in a band

But there's something about West Virginia
That stays with me day after day
And when night is falling I still hear her calling
Thousands of miles away

We found a record producer
Had his own label and all
Deal sweet as honey but he took our money
We took the fall
We worked with the almost-famous
Their names won't mean much to you
But there were some good guys, helping us realise
A way through

And there's something about West Virginia
That stays with me day after day
And when night is falling I still hear her calling
Thousands of miles away

One day I'm going back there
To the mountains and cool, rushing streams
Lately those steep wooded valleys
Fill my dreams
Reconnect with my family
Hope they're all doing fine
Father and mother, sister and brother
It's time..

There's something about West Virginia
That stays with me day after day
And when night is falling I still hear her calling
Thousands of miles away

Ghostgum,

Love that harmonica in the intro and those lovely harmonies in the chorus. This has such a nice John Denver type feel. And the lyrics tell a familiar, true and heartfelt story. Really pretty tune. Well, well done!

All the best,

Deej

Good Morning, Ghostgum ...

I really enjoyed this. Such a pleasant listen! I agree with Deej about the harmonica and vocal harmony. It does have John Denver Country-Folk character about it. I also enjoy your phrasing. Thanks for a terrific listen!!! Wishing you the very best ...

Alan

All three replies to my post indicate I'm channelling the late, great Mr. Denver. Hardly surprising; from 1975-80 I was playing his music almost constantly, hoping one day I might write a song of similar calibre. Who knows? Might get there one day.

Cheers,

Brian.

We're just a few miles from the border of that beautiful state. Nice tune and great vocal. Catchy and pleasant chorus.

Brian,
Very nice composition both musically and lyrically. Vocal performance is A+.
Enjoyed it. The only critical opinion, I think harmonica sounds a bit thin compared to overall soundscape.

Thank you for sharing!

Thanks, Misha. The slightly 'thin' harmonica sound was deliberate. I wanted a distant, almost wistful sound to match the mood of the song. Guess it didn't work as well as I hoped wink

What a tune! Really easy to take, and your vocals are stunning on this. I'm definitely getting some John Denver vibes here which is always a good thing in my books. It has a bright, happy quality to it and the instrumentation is nicely lush too.

Thanks for sharing smile

Brian, everything about this song works so well.

Impressive lyrics, perfect use of harmonica in the fills, and the instrumentation throughout is excellent.

The entire production is remarkably well done. Excellent.

Tuneful. You've got a nice voice, and that JD sound is there. The lyrics move the story along, and the chorus does it's job.

I think the vocals could sit better in the mix - they seem a bit too loud compared to the backing tracks.

Lovely song, it carried me away to another place.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Thanks, Tom. I'm not from W.Va. (or anywhere else in the USA) so I have to rely on my imagination (and Wikipedia and Google Maps) when putting these songs together wink

This is really good. I agree with the JD similarities. You did a really good job on the vocal and harmonies. I also liked the "thin" harmonica. I think it did capture that "distant, almost wistful sound".

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.

Interesting song. Awesome vocal tracks, production and mix. Making people think of John Denver ain't a bad thing. You did good!

Love the John Denver feel. Beautiful arrangement with the harmonica, pretty melody and with that voice actually I could listen to you sing the phone book.... Thought the vocals were a tad out front in the production.

Hi Josie, Thanks for the feedback. Two of you have said the vocals are a bit too prominent. I might take them down a Db or two before I commit the track to disc.

Vocals and harmonies are very well done - better to be a bit too prominent than too far back in the mix. Enjoyed the feel-good vibe.

Thanks for the tip, Mark. Before I committed the project to CD I adjusted some parts of the vocal track that were either too soft or too prominent but it was only 1 or 2 db in either direction.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
