Hi all

Just wondered if anybody has any ideas on styles/R Tracks that would work well for something in the style of 'Let the good times roll', the BB King version.

The style picker song suggestion has the RayCharles version listed but all the styles suggested seem a but too orchestral to me.

All the big band styles I have sampled seems bit 'chuggy' and the blues styles are a bit 'hard'. Looking for that fun bounce without it sounding like Victor Sylvester or Stevie Ray Vaughan! smile

All ideas gratefully accepted.
Many thanks
Mark

You didn't say what version of Biab you have and you really need to tell us that for a questions like this, Mark. Having said that, the closest I got is the _Brief.Sty with Bluesy Horns. This is from the 2019 Extra Style Pak 7. These style pak's are a collection of Real Tracks that you may already have that sound good for a blues style. This is why we need your version of Biab and what RT sets you have. If you have the latest and greatest including Style Pak 7 then try it out, if not I will list the RT's that are in it and you can manually select them yourself.

Try to look for appropriate RT's and RD's that fit your groove under the blues category. Roll your own. Don't feel limited by styles although they can be a great place to start (and often are all you need)...but there are hundreds of blues or appropriate for blues RT's. And each RT has a demo for you. In general but not always try to avoid mixing sw and ev choices and keep the tempos with a reasonably tight range based on your project tempo. And if all this is old hat to you forgive the ramble.

Thank you my friend!
Yes I am a bit of a newbie and tend to stick with the pre-canned RT sets. I must be more adventurous!
Cheers

Hey Bob

I have the latest and greatest (V 2019, just upgraded) but on Mac so not sure I have that one. I do have the extras so hopefully I do, but as I have been finding, the Mac version is often a bit lacking vs what is in the Win version.

I will take a look today and report back smile

Many thanks
Mark

Hey

OK So I tried the _BRIEF.STY. Perfect!
Interesting that the song picker didn't find it or at least it was WAY down the list. I entered 'Let the good times roll". It cam up with a couple of versions, I selected the Ray Charles as it was the closest. But _Brief was nowhere to be seen.

Just a thought. Is there ANY way the song matching thing can be user managed? It would seem to be a perfect project for the forum users to come together and place their knowledge of what styles etc work well when trying to create something in the style of a song.It sure would save me hours of auditioning styles.....

Anyway, thanks for the help. Now I just need to nail that BB King solo! smile

Cheers
Mark

Glad you like that one. I didn't like the styles chosen in the song name window either which happens a lot with me. I used the style filter area to the left by typing in "blues shuffle".

Also, while I've never had a Mac, from what I've read the new 2019 Mac Biab is very good and very close to the Windows version now and in some cases better. Pipeline reported that the Mac VST is considerably faster generating tracks than Windows is for example.

Since you're new at this I'll explain a bit how the styles work. Midi styles are actually recorded by live players playing midi controllers which generates written out notated musical phrases. Midi is very cool because it can be easily changed once you understand it. Midi requires a synth to generate sound. The better synth you have ie more expensive, the better midi sounds, If you have a high end big name synth midi can sound awesome.

Real Tracks/Drums are the same thing but are recorded audio not midi. They sound great and no synth required but since it's audio the phrases or individual notes cannot be changed so what you hear is what you get. A very common question that comes up almost daily around here is how to I create a song specific lick or phrase with the RT's? The answer is you can't, that has to be done with midi and there's nothing stopping you from starting with an all RT song and changing the bass for example to midi and writing out the bass line yourself or finding a midi style that has a bass you like. Yes, you can select a different style for each track if you want. If you decide to write it out yourself you then need to freeze the track because if you don't Biab will immediately generate it's style based bass line and overwrite what you just wrote. That can ruin your day.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
