Misha kindly wrote the melody, sang the vocal, provided numerous excellent observations and mixing tips as well as preparing the Morse.
This is a mix almost ready for mastering but needs your ears for any suggestions, perspectives etc.
The BIAB components of this track are the drums (some EQing as usual) and flute (some odd note choices but that's life).
Guitars are a Squire Mustang and Bruno Royal Artist through a compressor, GDI21 and spring reverb pedal.
Fender 12 string acoustic through a AT2020 mic.
Vantage & Hofner knock off Basses through a comp pedal and BDI21.
Squire Mustang into Mel9 choirs, strings & orchestra through comp pedal, GDI21 tweed settings and spring reverb pedal.
Mellotron string section tape wave files cut & pasted for high drones.
Non Reaper native plug ins are the readily available freebies of Density MkII and PSP Vintage Warmer 2.
https://soundcloud.com/rayc/games-none-can-play-pygmy-beat-extended-featuring-xabarovskiy-krai
Here's a mix with more bottom end and the vocals raised half a dB. I've applied the suggestions - I'm not sure the bottom end needed it but I've given it a go. Vocal levels are a matter of taste but, again, I've done as suggested. I do listen! Is it better for the changes?
https://soundcloud.com/rayc/games-none-can-play-b-pygmy-beat-extended-feat-misha
Here's another bash - more flute reverb, more level from the drums and by popular demand, more vocal level...
https://soundcloud.com/rayc/games-none-can-play-revision
NEW MIX - I was unhappy with the way the BIAB solos didn't match the feel, (or chords), of the song so made a very basic but closer to my idea.

I enjoyed the production. First time I've heard a song with Misha singing so that is a treat. To my ears his vocal is buried in the mix just a little bit, the drums are a little loud in places and the low end is a little light. I love the dual guitar tracks and the flute solo. The morse code at the end is a nice touch.

Ray,

Excellent backing - I agree the vocals could come up in the mix. Not too keen on the flute - the note choices were indeed a touch odd especially the end part.

Like all the guitar parts and the bass.

Jim,
Thanks.
If you've not heard the man sing prior to this do pull up his posts. he's sung a dozen or so in the last 18 months and his singing, particularly on his own songs - where he has the freedom to express & create - he does superb work.
I've tweaked according to your comments. See the OP.

Great song!!!

Thanks Gruverider,
The song started with the two electric guitars and they, naturally with the spring reverb, gave a sense of a wide image so I went with it.
Vox raised a tad as requested.

Peter,
Thank you sir. Vocals lifted a little.
The flute - well ALL the BIAB solos I tried to be honest - were a bit suspect. The program kept fooling with the chords and complaining there was too high a percentage of complex chords (D, Dm, F#m, E, G6 F#7 and Fmaj7 aren't exactly complex in my book - mostly just movement of the same shape or minor variations), so I gave up and went with the least awful. I did try to retune some notes with ReaTune but the results were awful.

Ray/Misha,

A cool song. Awesome overall sound.

(I listened to the second link).
The guitars sound great.
I like the flute (thought it could use more reverb).
I think the vocal still needs to "come out" some. the "big reverb/delay sound is good - just needs to be louder - it sounds (here) like the singer is behind the band.
Always a personal choice, I would mix the drums louder.

Really like the song!

Very clever lyrics, all wrapped up in a really dynamic groove.

Vibrant and powerful, with perfectly fitting dischordancy.

Thoroughly enjoyed this.

loved the style of this song Eighties feel!!.

The lyrics are magical mystery themed.

The vocals definitely need to come up more .

Thanks

Thanks fj,

Man, this one begs for a cool video with all that vivid imagery.

Or it would work with a nicely done retro light show.

The first thing we noticed on the monitors was the HUGE soundstage. Big!

This is a complex and nuanced production that is by its nature
gonna invite a lot of opinions.

For a production like this we don't feel qualified nor the need
to parse things out. It was more fun just to listen to it in
its totality. And from that perspective we hear a great intro (love the
way the guitars establish that theme) that segues immediately into
a vocal that you know is gonna be killer.

And things get bigger and bigger. Filling that stadium up smile

There are great vocal and instrumental performances to go along with
that excellent mix.

Kudos y'all!

Cool song.......great sound and really interesting lyric!! Misha does a great job on the vocal. I still feel it is a bit too soft.....battles with the high guitar a bit. Otherwise, everything sounds great to me!! Take care. Greg

I listened to the first link in speakers, but the vocals were completely buried.

So I listened to the second link, but still though the vocals were buried.

Then I put on headphones, listened to mix - vocals still buried.

Cool vibe, guitars sound great, musically interesting. Cool listen.

Thank you everyone who mentioned my small part in this!

Ray, you did massive work on this! My part was minimal. I am very thankful you gave me a shot at it! The arrangement & lyrics are very strong. The vocals I recorded are ok for a initial variant, but my intuition tells me you should also try another, perhaps more "aggressive" singer if opportunity arises to have a different view/perspective. In any case, I enjoyed participating in this a lot. It was challenging in a very good way.

Thank you!

Misha.

The instrumentation is great. Perfect, actually. I didn't hear a difference in the two versions, but I'm not listening on good equipment. Bonus points for creativity with the lyrics and vocals - it's rare you can say something is unique in music, but both are definitely unique. However, they are something of an acquired taste, I'm guessing. I'm sure I thought the same thing the first time I listened to Captain Beefheart, but since then he has become one of my faves. So we'll see what further listens will produce.

Thanks very much for your kind observations.
I'm expecting a guitar solo relatively soon but decided that a more BIAB version might better suit the forum.
Misha did a stellar job I agree: between us we edited the lyrics into a more usable form, (they were much wordier - twice as much per line), he then did a couple of draft melody & phrasing runs before settling into something he was comfortable recording.
The electric guitar with spring reverb, in the 2nd part of the intro, really set the sound stage - it sounded wide open and there was no fighting that.
Again - thanks.

If you can acquire a taste for the Cpt - then you're a sterling chap. I have a strong affection for Schoenberg's atonal & 12 tone poem stuff. Music is a wonderfully varied thing.

Quite a production! I always enjoy hearing live instruments in the mix.

I listened to your last mix, levels seem pretty good to me.

Good stuff, Ray, I always enjoy your work, and Misha sounds good too.

Ray & Misha ...

Well, that was different! I don't think I've ever heard anything quite like this. But, I listen mostly to Jazz, Country and Classic Rock - a little Pop-Rock, too. I'm guessing this would fall somewhere in the Alternative Pop genre, or something like that. So, anything I have to say should be considered with little more than a grain of salt. BTW ... I only listened to the last post (3rd). My time here is very, very limited, so I get in as much as I can when I'm here.

The intro was stellar! The opposing guitars were a perfect blend ... immediately set the tone and musical aura. And it made me want to stay for the whole show ... glad I did!

Misha has a unique and terrific vocal style. Not sure hoiw to describe the lyric - interesting and "crafty" but attention-getting with the ability to keep the listener engaged.

Hope that little essay was worth your time to read. Hats off to both of you for a lot of hard but fruitful work. enjoyed it. Wishing you both the very best ...

U2 meets Ian Anderson....

cool song. it's creative and not a genre we often hear.

I'm listening on cheap computer speakers. But I like that last mix fairly well. Vox is kind of dry sounding but I need to listen on my buds later.

You can drive yourself crazy trying to tweek a mix. As me how I know. Comes a point you just say "done" and leave it..... at least for a while. Often taking a break and coming back to it a week later helps give you fresh ears on it. When I get frustrated and seem to be making no progress, I leave it for a day or two and try again. Not saying that's the problem....well, I've talked myself into another corner. It;s a good song.

Thanks GuitarHacker,
I'm tweaking to fill in time as the "proper" guitar solo hasn't been delivered yet and I'm treading water.
This track is also a little unresolved as Misha wants me to find another singer.

Misha, you have a very good voice. You should sing more often. Your vocal and lyrics were outstanding.

Ray, your guitars were icing on the cake, expertly placed at the right time in the right space. Loved that spring reverb.

It was said that this sounds like it is from the 80s. In my old mind I think it is more like the late 60's. YMMV

You both should be very proud of this one.

Dave, Alan, Herb, Mario, Ember,
Thank you for mentioning my part!
Ray,
I think now my voice overpowers backing a little:) But hey, it is a work in progress.
In the core, some tunes should stay "liquid" to try different scenarios. Backing/composition is awesome on this, that is why I suggested to try it with another set of vocals. It is not about how good or bad I sung, it is about variation.

P.S. Mario, most of credit goes to Ray. It is his tune, composition, bass, lyrics, mix.
Ray did not enforce guidelines on singing and let me have it my way.

Misha.

I listened to the New Mix...
Pretty cool...
You & Misha make a great team...
If you're still open to suggestions...
Perhaps a far right - far left shift in Misha's vocals every 2 lines later in the song...
Perhaps even later a far right - far left shift with Misha singing 2 verses at the same time...
Perhaps at the end of the song before Morse does his thing...
You could play some Misha's lyrics in reverse...

On 2nd thought...
Better not take my suggestions...
The song sounds great as is...
But it definitely needs one of your unique videos smile

Late to this, RayC & Misha... hey, no need for another singer, you are right for the intensity and otherworldlyness of this song!
Haven`t listened to earlier versions, but will try & keep up as you go now.
Love the backing, only thought on vocals was the levels seem to come and go a ittle in relation to the mix (on `phones anyway)... do you run them through a vocal rider?
Your collaborations are great!

Robert

Excellent intro. You definitely have excellent skills with the mixing board. Loved song. Cool lyric and Mishas vocal. Loved the way the instruments blended so well together but when changing listening focus you could make them out so clearly in the mix. Well done

I'm a bit late to the party but I've liestened to the song several times in the course of the week.

Well, a collab of, say, Floyd, Janice and Bud is something almost natural, but a collab of you and Misha is really something special, as I think youÄre really coming from different musical planets (or am I that wrong?).

However, another amazing production - everything fine with it from composition to vocals to the excellent sound.

Take care,

Stefan

Hi Ray,

This one slipped past me.

You and Misha make a great team. This is an awesome arrangement. You have a real knack for assembling sounds that capture the imagination.

Misha's singing is great. I love the Russian influence that he brings with him. It mesmerises me every time.

I enjoyed this.
Noel

What a tune! Love the abstract lyricism here, and Misha did a great job with the vocals. Love the production too - it sounds really intricate and complex, but in the best way possible.

I thoroughly enjoyed my listen. Thanks for sharing smile

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
