I Live For The Weekend

Once again we are privileged to have Janice sing another one of our tunes.
It's always a treat to hear what Janice comes up with and how she transforms a song.

Lead & Backing Vocals - Janice Merritt
Lyrics - Leon
Bud Merritt - Recording Janice mix assistance & general support.
I played lead & rhythm guitars along with the other guys in the band.

The Band:
RealTracks in style: 2873:Bass, Acoustic, AmericanaSlow128Byron Sw 040
RealTracks in song: 2734:Organ, Rhythm BluesSlow128Mike Sw 065
RealTracks in style: 2875:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm AmericanaTremoloSlow128Colin Sw 040
RealTracks in style: 2874:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm AmericanaGrittySlow128Brent Sw 040
RealTracks in song: ~2290:Horn Section, Rhythm SlowPop Ev16 065
RealDrums [in style:AmericanaSlow128^02-a:Kick Snare, b:Ride Snare

Some additional work was done on the horns.

I Live For The Weekend

I live for the weekend
He told me that
If he had the money
He would leave and not look back
Going through the motions
Spinning his wheels
Try to summon an emotion
That he no longer feels

I live for the weekend
Counting the days
As the weeks turn into years
And the years slip away
Going through the motions
Repeat the words
He don’t believe them, though
They all sound so absurd

Did he ever buy it?
This dream they are selling
Did he ever think it was the truth
that he was telling?

I live for the weekend
So many of us do
While away the hours
Just for something to do
Did he ever love it?
Or was it just a fling
Sometimes he’d hum a little
But it never made him sing

I live for the weekend
He said it with a smile
But I thought he sounded like
A lonely little child
I live for the weekend
I said ‘me too’
I live for the weekend
So many of us do

Nice arrangement.
Janice bowled a strike on this one - bvox are lovely.
The title is quite sneaky - It conjured images of fun, sprightly activity and rock'n.
Instead it's a steady, contemplative reflection with a solid back beat.
The lead lines could be raised a little where they are playing behind the voice - just a tad that is.
VERY cool.

Cheers

Oh my goodness. My first thought? "I quit". :-). It's SUCH a beautiful song, so well done ... the lyrics in particular steal the show here, so to speak ... hard not to cry, most of us have been there, I'm sure of it. And then Ms Merritt's singing ... I am no country expert, so it's hard for me to compare her accurately to anyone, but - because I don't know many country singers, I can only say: Shania Twain but warmer in the tone. To me, that's a massive compliment, I hope it is taken as such :-)

The mix is fine, too, nothing to fault here, etc. etc. ... but what makes this song, for me, is what I mentioned above: the lyrics, the singing and (first and foremost in this case) the writing.

I'm not going to quit writing just yet :-) - but, seriously, how does one follow something as searingly honest as this? Hmph!!! haha. Sincerest congratulations from me!!! :-)

Yeah, I like this.

Nice writing, nice arrangement, and of course a great vocal from Janice. Loved the background vox, especially after 4:00 where the second vox comes in.

Nice outro solo, Peter.

Knocked it out of the park as per usual!

Peter/Leon/J&B...

A big slow-bluesy-rock sound that goes deep inside ya.

All the pieces work to make it work. A great vocal (of course). Cool BGVs.
Great drums & bass. Guitars are terrific. The solos fit perfectly.

Nice mix.

"Sometimes he’d hum a little
But it never made him sing"

Nice.

Enjoyed the listen.

Beautiful blues with country flavor!
Lyrics fit very well. Janice singing, phrasing and doubling is outstanding.
Peter, guitars are A+! Great team work on this!
P.S. I think instrumentals can go up just a hair.

Nice story created by the lyrics that held my attention from beginning to end. Any time Janice sings, it's a bonus. Nice job on all levels of this one.

That's a winning formula all around. It has an anthem quality that might well be applied to communicate with this dynamic new generation that's coming into its own on a broad scale. Janice's vocal, the melody, and the lyrics are so strong in this number that some listeners might not notice the superb accompaniment and Bud's flawless handling of the technics -- Hey, that's all right. The forum listeners here recognize and hear every bit of it.
Suggest picking several topics to choose from on the category of "songs for the new working generation" as a way of letting them know we know they are out there and we appreciate what they are doing for us and we want to communicate with and support them. Understated, though, like this "I live for the weekend." No one likes over baked.
Hope that's not all too heavy. Count me in the exploratory focus group. smile

Well, having Leon write a song, Janice sing it, the guitars played by Peter and Bud being involved in the sound job - that's what I call 'playing it safe' - oh boy, how could such a collaboration ever lead to a song which isn't grand...?

But this one stands even out: Very appealing lyrics, and who could ever sing them more forcefully than Janice? And Janice, you proved to be the Queen of BV already with your, ah, musical stunt on Rough Edge. LOVE IT !!!

Peter, wouldn't have expected anything but great playing from your side - you really never disappoint !!!

Very, very, very, very good from A to Z.

All the best,

Stefan

WOW! If I heard this in a record shop (remember them) I would have purchased it right then and there! Janice you knocked this one out of the park. Peter your excellent guitar work complimented the song perfectly. Leon, what great lyrics you wrote. Off course the backing tracks and mix are spot on.

You all should be very proud of this.

Ah, record shops. I spent many hours and way too much of my money in them as a youth. And funnily enough there's still a very good one near where I live, which stocks a lot of vinyl. Records aren't quite extinct just yet.

This song is really well done. I mean, break this song down to any pieces of the elements that you want to and it's just great. Lyrics, structure, mix/master, lead, harmony, backing vox, instrumentation, performance, arrangement...and on and on. You have checked all the boxes, IMO.

I would say you all work really well together but I don't need to. They song says it better than I ever could.

Great addition to the showcase!

Peter,Janice & Bud,

Terrific write that needs a singer who can hold/bend notes to bring out the soul...aah,
call Janice!
Love the intro with that tremolo guitar, the harmonies and killer outro solo.
In short- its ALL GOOD.

Hi Peter, Leon, Janice and Bud.

What a wonderful, musically rich creation. Every aspect of this -- vocals, guitars, lyrics, Realtrack selection, arrangement, mix -- overflows with gold-medal musical competence. I totally enjoyed traveling along with you all for nearly 6 minutes of aural excellence.

Right now, I'm sitting here reading through Leon's words and marveling at how well they flow. Moreover, how Janice positions each syllable perfectly on the appropriately stressed musical beat never ceases to amaze me. When it comes to prosody and aligning words and rhythms, Janice certainly leads the way!

Brilliant work! (I write that without any sense of hyperbole. It is a statement of fact.)

Regards,
Noel

Just great! This really soars into "stadium" territory as it grows from that solid gospel beginning. Janice conquers all styles, the song is well-written, the band is rock solid, and it all sounds good to me. Hugely enjoyed.

What a marvelous recording and song. I think Tommy expressed my views perfectly. He said it all in a few short sentences.

Great stuff by all of you. Peter, your guitar sounds so dang good ... tone and performance. Bud's knob-twisting is second to one. I've mentioned this to Janice before ... but she often reminds me of Susan Tedechi. if you could find the medium between Etta James and Susan ... you's have Janice Merrit.

Dear Ms. Janice, 'Bud', Leon, and 'PeterF'...

Ya'll cooked-up a nice, big, heavy and steamin', flavorful pot of slo-mo, well-seasoned electrified blues in I Live for The Weekend. It was delicious enough for me to lick the juice off of my fingers -- to hell with a napkin! I didn't waste a drop of it.

'PeterF' your solos are powerfully soulful cool. I'd bet you had your eyes closed in a transport of improvisational ecstacy while you loosed those gee-tar demons out of your spirit.

Leon, over time I've noticed that you truly tell stories through your lyrics, and that's why they're so inspiring to me. Listening to them is like turning the pages of someone's heart.

Last, but definitely not least, Ms. Janice! You always receive -- and inarguably deserve -- the shower of kudos that usually follow in the wake of your performances. However, in this song, I believe I heard -- and felt -- something deeper, more lived-in, kind'a like a tattoo you couldn't erase from your skin. It was as though Leon's lyrics ceased to be words connected to each other, and instead became a stream-of-consciousness of sung feelings that only were interrupted by the breaths you took. These blues hit a spot somewhere in you (am I correct, or no?), and you simply brought them out of the darkness, and into the light.

LOREN

Understated, though, like this "I live for the weekend." No one likes over baked.

Thanks Ed. This was, indeed a fun project. Peter snd Leon certainly brought me In on a fine song!

Peter, wouldn't have expected anything but great playing from your side - you really never disappoint !!!

Very, very, very, very good from A to Z.

All the best,

Hey Loren, Bud here.

Janice is the happiest and most positive person you could imagine. But I’ve told her for years she’s like a method actor as she can get inside a song and give it her all while learning and recording it...and then walk away. She deeply appreciates your comments!

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
