I had a friend ask me if I knew how to park a domain name. I've seen it done, but have never done. I told them that I may know some good people to ask. wink

Basically, they have a band name they are "thinking" of using; but aren't 100% sure just yet. They wouldn't being doing anything with it until after early next year. They would like to...

1-Secure the domain name
2-Have a landing page with their logo, or at a minimum "Site Coming Soon" kind of thing.
3-They would like to spend as little as possible being they are about 60/40 split on using the specific name.

Any ideas/suggestions my website guru friends?

I was just told, so I'm adding, they would prefer to get a domain name and landing page without having to do the whole by for a year, or monthly fees. A simple domain purchase and landing page.

There's a million websites you can buy the domain name. Just Google.

1) For my site I use SSL Catacomb Networking - Domains to reserve my domain name each year. Rates are so cheap anymore there should be no issues with shoving out a few bucks to reserve it.

2) That takes a webhost company to store your site info. I pay very little as well for that each year through Hostcherry Web Spaces.

3) They could probably get by with less than $50 to do it all.

The examples I used are just for sites I've been using for over 10 years. Like I said there's a million places to find domains and hosting and some of them will do it all with one account. Your Google-foo should do it. It's an easy thing once you've done it a couple of times..... Good Luck sir!

RE: Your edit here..... Tell them it's so cheap to not worry about it. Most of these sites are set up to do an annual. Most probably won't do less than that because it's not cost effective. P.S. - There's no permanent one-time pay deals either. You pay each year or more. I think on mine I can pay up to several years at once. Since it's so cheap, I do that.

As Steve says, there are a bunch of places to do that.

As an example, you can use iPage for $1.99 per month (for the first year - after that it goes way up). That will include a free domain name (again for the first year).

Once you have that domain name, you can transfer somewhere else (registration) once that year is up (when iPage gets more expensive).

But that would allow them to nail it down for a year for $25.

I think GoDaddy does something similar....

One suggestion: if they already searched to ensure the domain name they want is not taken, register it RIGHT NOW. I know of some cases where the search itself seems to lead to speculators quickly securing the domain name. I don't know how they know, but it seems they do.

It's so easy to do a Coming Soon page. It's harder, but easy for those of us who code, to write a simple redirect that sends traffic somewhere else in the meantime.

I passed along all of the info and they secured that name and hosting.

Thanks for all of the suggestions I didn't know and wouldn't have thought of.

Time to write a song...I've got Friends in Tech Places. Somehow it's lacking the country feel I was originally going for.

Seriously, thanks everyone for your help. It's greatly appreciated!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
