I'm sorry if I am posting in the wrong place or posting something that has been discussed endlessly before. I have had a look around but couldn't find an answer to my question and I am new to the forum so please bear with me.
I've been using Biab for about a year to produce my own songs. I write and sing my own songs. I work the chords out on my keyboard but use Biab to produce backing tracks for my songs. I do this because I am not a great musician and also I don't have a band or enough money to go in a studio with musicians.
I like being on my own and creating my own songs and getting them out there with the help of Biab.
So now I have a couple of songs out on Spotify and slowly gaining a few followers.
My question is I am not sure how to classify myself on Spotify. I have myself down as a singersongwriter which of course is true. However I don't mention I am not playing as a musician on any of the two songs and that the songs are produced with Biab software.
How do other singers that write their own songs but use Biab for backing tracks deal with this question.
Do you keep quiet and let people think you play on the songs or do you come clean and mention you write and sing the songs but use backing tracks.
I would be interested to hear what people think is the best way forward with this problem.
Looking forward to hear what advice people have for me. Many thanks.

I don't know it this is the best way but on the tracks that I am using BiaB I state in my write up that I am using BiaB. I give BiaB credit were credit is due plus I am not trying to con people into thinking that I actually played those parts. YMMV

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

For Spotify? No need to get into that kind of detail, I don’t.

In my case in addition to BIAB tracks I play most of the guitar parts (all the lead guitar), sometimes the piano, and sometimes I use EZDrummer for the drum track.

I don’t mention any of those things because it’s not important, it’s the song that matters, not how it was created.

My $.02 for what it’s worth wink

Hi

I can see what you mean
But you don’t have to play any instrument to be a singer /songwriter.

While it is possible to create a complete song including backing tracks drums and even a self generated melody, and even the chord progression need not be your own, with BIAB without playing a note or even having a Musical instrument.
In this case you can’t really claim to have written a song when it is all software generated.
But you could still write lyrics for the completely Auto generated song.

What you claim to be yours is between you and you and that little man in your ear!
However in your case as you say that you do work up your own chord progressions.
Then your own creativity is getting into the mix, which tools you use, to get you to your goal is up to you.

When you think about once someone takes your song up you have no control over what the may choose to play it on, from a Penny whistle to a Theatre Organ or a distorted Guitar. Or Concert Grand.

Import thing
Have fun
Mike

Thanks to MarioD, BlueAttitude, Mike Head and MusicStudent for getting back to me with your thoughts. After reading all your advice I am leaning towards not saying anything. As Mike Head mentions a singer/songwriter doesn't need to be able to play an instrument. As it is I can play keyboard but just not to a good level. When you think about for example Michael Jackson I don't think he was a musician but he was a singer/songwriter. Anyway thanks to you all for your help.

Hi Knopf1968. The answer to this question is along the lines of how long is a piece of string, we all use BiaB in variations of ways.

Before deciding that BiaB was the way to go I used to write my own music on a Korg Pa4X arranger keyboard. All my own ideas using the Korgs styles etc. I bought the basic BiaB app to see if it was as good as everyone seemed to claim. Knowing that I had 30 for a full quibble refund. It didn't take 30 days to realise that even in the basic app the styles were as good as if not better than the Korg, and there were far more of the styles I like. Long story short when 2019 Mac version was released at half price I upgraded, getting extra styles etc for free. I also bought all of the extra styles pak 1 -7.

That didn't answer your question I know but its not just BiaB making the music. We as musicians at whatever level can produce top quality music. Anyone can make a tune in BiaB but I believe that unless you have at least a basic knowledge of musical theory (and mine is basic) you will not truly get the best from it. Do you tell others that you used BiaB in your music, thats up to you, personally I never do. All of the melodies and chord progressions are mine, the lyrics most certainly are mine.

The one thing that really did help my songwriting is I have BiaB on my iMac and a copy on a MacBook Air. A small Arturia keyboard, headphones and SSD drive with BiaB on it along with the MacBook Air all fit easily in to a backpack which means I can write music anywhere now. I no longer sit in front of the Kork facing a wall.

So is it your music, yes of course it is. Just buying BiaB and installing it will not produce your musical ideas unless you work with it. I'm sure other users. have their own ideas on this.

Hi TRYUK,
Thanks for getting back to me and for the advice you gave.
What you said about all of the melodies, chord progressions and lyrics in your songs being yours is the same for me.
So I agree with you that I don't really need to mention using Biab in my music.
You have helped me clarify this now in my mind so thanks for that.

Hi Knopf1968,
After posting my reply I had a thought about if the backing is ours or not. It reminded me of a TV documentary about the Beach Boys. They never played their own instruments on the original hits. I believe they used "The Wrecking Crew" a group of studio session players popular at the time. While The Beach Boys wrote the lyrics and music others actually played the instruments. I doubt anyone would argue that The Wrecking Crew wrote the music.

In their very early hits, the Beach Boys played their own instruments. As they became successful they could hire "The Wrecking Crew" but Brian Wilson always had a lot of input with the "crew". He was the architect of the music, and the 'crew' respected and enjoyed his input.

In many cases the "crew" or "The Swampers" and other studio 'bands' recorded the backing track for tens of thousands of other band's and single artist's records. Then the bands had to go home and learn what the session musicians put down on tape/vinyl.

In those days before limiters, compressors, advanced EX, modern FX, and a limit of a few tracks, it took special skills to record a clean take. A good take could be ruined by improper mic control and live bands often didn't have those skills.

We were the opening act for a lot of headliners back in the late 1960s, and it was a surprise to me back then but I learned almost nobody played their own instruments on their records.

It's not cheating like some people misunderstand. The songwriter still writes the song, the vocalists still sing it, and the studio musicians take what the originals played, recorded it first or second take and sometimes made it better.

In our duo http://www.s-cats.com I make our own backing tracks http://www.nortonmusic.com/backing_tracks.html and nobody but a very few other musicians have ever accused us of cheating. The audience loves it - which is why we have been gigging as a duo steadily since 1985. It's all about making the best music for your particular audience, and whether that be on a flat-top guitar or full orchestra backing tracks, the wisdom is to know your market and fulfill that need.

That is what makes a band or small group popular and keeps them gigging. My wedding band had that motto, above in bold, and we were always gigging. We played what the audience wanted to hear and not what we necessarily wanted to play, i.e. we hated The Chicken Dance but we played it, sometimes 2 or 3 times a night, with smiles on our faces.

Thanks TRYUK, Notes Norton and MarioD for your replies.
It's interesting what you say about studio bands playing on the recordings of many artists.
I know in the 60s that happened a lot but I hadn't really thought about it in relation to my question.
So that gives me even more comfort to feel it's fine to use Biab backing tracks on my songs.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
