So I open two instances of BIAB

Then I highlight all the bars I wish to copy in the first BIAB instance and select Edit/Copy

Then I switch to my second BIAB instance and select Edit/Paste

And...nothing!

I'm sure there is some BIAB secret handshake I don't know about. smile Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

J3x, you must of missed the memo. That ain't doable and has been in the wish list over the years. Of course there are work arounds... grin

Dan, I'm not even surprised! Sheesh!

I would ask the obvious follow up questions like "Why in the world does it not do something so basic as Copy/Paste?" and "If the feature does not work why isn't Copy/Paste grayed out?" but the answers would likely not grant me any level of satisfaction.

Maybe this will be one of 2020's "49 New Features"!

You know the drill. Go to the wish list and make a wish.
Actually looks like you did over 3 1/2 years ago with this very same wish. Give it a big +1 for old time sake.

Like you said, still time for 2020 new features list. grin

There is a recent thread where Pipeline gave a workaround. I’ll try to find it.

It took me a while to find it, as it was a response to a wishlist post

If it's just chords you need to copy you can do it the word processor way:

The first instance of BB
File > Save Special > Save Song ABC Notation File..
select one instrument
check ONLY Include Chords
Copy to clipboard

paste in Notepad

The second instance of BB
do the same

paste in the bottom of Notepad as below

now you can make it into one new song with a bit of cut n paste
save it as new song.abc
File> Open Special > Open ABC Notation Music File..

Code:
X:1
T:Untitled Song
L:1/8
K:C
Q:1/4=120

Thanks Pipeline but it doesn't work for me!

The "File > Save Special > Save Song ABC Notation File.." works.

Then the paste into a Notepad file and saving as .abc files works.

But when I then try to open that file in BIAB one song brings in completely wrong chords while the second song causes BIAB to crash.

(Honestly, I would have been more surprised had it worked.)

That should work perfect, BUT Biab is not importing correctly the ABC it exports. So there is a bug in the current version.
Did you try the other way File > Import > Import MGU SGU song.

Here is a workaround for you. When you have the first set of chords on the screen in front of you, get a piece of paper and a pencil and write then down. Then close that file and open a new file. With the piece of paper in hand look for the chord in each bar, then enter the chord by typing on the key board into the same bar number of the new song.

This works fine here, I just tried it. grin

Here's how I choose to copy chord charts between two different BIAB projects:

Select an all midi style and complete the chord chart in BIAB project one.

Give Project One a Name and Save As (F6) a Midi File to a known location.

Close project one by selecting the NEW button and answer NO to save the project.

Open (F7) the midi project you just saved.

This will open the midi song and automatically analyze the chords and populate the Chord Chart with the chords from Project One.

Thanks but I cannot imagine me ever doing this. First, I'm not using MIDI in BIAB. Second, every time I have let BIAB analyze chords I end up spending more time fixing its mistakes than just typing them manually.

I think Dan may have found the best work-around! laugh

A viable workaround for the time being may be the BiaB 'Medley Maker'. This feature allows concatenating songs, thus effectively importing chords from one song on the disk into some opened BiaB instance. Within this instance chords may then be copied, shifted and whatnot to achieve what was originally intended.

Yes, Dan has surely found a fool proof method but it can be a bit tedious.

From our conversation, I'm not sure I clearly understood what you're trying to accomplish or if you understand my method.

To recap my impression to what you want to do is end up with two BIAB Chord Sheets in different projects with the exact same chords placed in each measure. Correct? You wish to achieve this by copy from one Chord Chart to a second Chord Chart in another project. Correct?

I may have confused you using the word 'midi'. No midi is used or harmed during this operation I have posted to copy/paste chord progressions between two BIAB projects.
The midi format is used to complete the operation. That's it. Two files can be opened if your BIAB is setup to allow that. No midi notes ever have to be sounded out in either project. Neither project has to be opened or closed. This technique is used to quickly and simply copy the chords from one song to another.

I was confused when you wrote ". . . every time I have let BIAB analyze chords I end up spending more time fixing its mistakes than just typing them manually."

I do not encounter that issue when I use this method. I don't recall ever having to make a chord correction and I sometimes, no, often use this method multiple times a day. I thought maybe your chord charts are more complex than what I normally input so I decided to test the method. I did and the result over three experiments with Jazz demos loaded was flawless... I loaded three different complex (to me) Jazz demo songs composed of all RealTracks. For each test, I opened the Style picker and selected a similar feel, tempo Midi only style. If necessary, I forced RealDrums to Midi so that I had an all midi style selected. (One style had two Supermidi Tracks but they worked as well in the test.)
At this point I have the RealTracks Style Chord Chart but have selected an All Midi Style to replace the RealTracks style.

I complete a SAVE Midi (F6) and this creates a midi file that I can open in another project using Open Midi (F7)

I opened each of those saved midi BIAB files in new projects and in each opening, the Chords were completely and properly populated with the original chord chart. Opening the Style Picker and choosing an all RealStyle style resulted in the RealStyle playing that original Chord Chart.

I am only using the midi format to copy and paste information between two projects and only using the Chord Chart information in my new project.

I've posted a photo of two Chord Charts showing the results when using this method.

You can copy the chords you want from the source SGU, open the destination SGU and paste.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
