In parallel to another post I made today about moving the Soloist directory to a "mechnaical" HD rather than an SSD, I got to thinking.

Would it make any sense as far a regeneration times to have the main BIAB / RB programs on one SSD and the RealTracks / RealDrums and Soloists directories on another separate SSD?

Thoughts and insight most appreciated.

Jeff

HI Jeff

To be honest I think that just might just be overkill.
There are probably a lot more things on your pc that could use up resources and slow down generation times. Like AV progs, wi fi , ram size etc .

Jeff, you have a fast computer, lots of RAM and two 1TB hard drives. Assuming those HDs are 7200 or greater RPM then you should be achieving fast generations. So what Mike has stated it is probably something running in the background.

Try what I do, disable your Ethernet card, your anti-virus, your anti-malware (if you have it) and everything else that is running in the background such as bluetooth. I do this every time I am using BiaB, DAW, and photographic programs.

Afterthoughts, if your RTs are on the same HD as BiaB then that may slowdown generations. I am guessing here as I have always had them on a different HD, thus no practical experience.

An internal SSD would probably improve generation times while external ones probably wouldn't. But would the time improvement be substantial? I doubt it as all the SSD would do is speed up the time from the SSD to the CPU, with all of the generations happening in the CPU and RAM and not in the SSD. I believe this is right but if not someone please correct me, thanx.

I hope this helps.

Hi Jeff,

I might be wrong but I don't think that it's possible to move the Soloists directory outside the main \bb folder.

As far as I'm aware, the only two directories that have the ability to have paths outside of \bb are \Drums and \Realtracks. These paths can be set individually in Preferences.

Regards,
Noel

I'm inclined to agree with Noel. I understand that there is a fixed hierarchical structure of locations that are expected to sit below the main \bb\ folder.

The exception are the ones that can be addressed separately, which are RealTracks and RealDrums folders.

You could symbolic link the Soloists to another drive, mine is 13GB !

Thanks to all for your helpful insight and advice. I'm always looking for ways to tweak a few more cycles out of my system but I think that I may be near the end of what can be done with regeneration times.

You've got a killer PC already for music work. I did a test with my system last year, I set up a song with all RT's including the soloist because just adding an RT soloist increases the generation times by several seconds. I tested running everything from the PG external drive then installed Biab and all the RT's on my SSD C drive which basically filled it up and I saw no difference in generation times. If I had I was going to replace my SSD with a 500 gig one but I saw no need for that. I kept the Biab/RB programs on the C drive and deleted all the RT's and run them from the external.

My generation times btw with a loaded up RT song of about 60 or 70 bars is 9-11 seconds. I also like some midi styles and I also use various VST's including Sampletank. Midi is basically instant gratification like 2 seconds at the most. A hybrid combo of say 3 RT's and 3 midi tracks is in the middle, maybe 4 or 5 seconds.

A quick question for you, how do you like ST 4 vs ST 3? I haven't upgraded yet.

Bob

Thanks Bob, you did exactly what I was thinking about doing: putting all of the RT and RealDrums on an SSD and putting the main program on a separate SSD. Doesn't sound like it would significantly increase regen times from what I current have (main program on the SSD and feeding RT / RD from a 7200 rpm spinner). I'll admit, I'm a tweaker, always looking for a few more seconds here and there!

ST4, in my opinion, is significantly different than ST3. The interface is very different, takes some time to get used to, and in some ways is a bit more difficult to use....at least for me.

The biggest disappointment for me was that the 6000 sounds they say that ST4 has, more than half of those are the same ones you already have on ST3. In fact, when you load ST4, it also loads ST3 in the background to a separate directory. (Hey, wait a minute! You mean I paid for ST3 again? Right!)

Once I had ST4, I asked IK Multimedia about upgrading to ST4 Max at a reduced cost. ST$ has a few more specialty keys sounds. Their response: no way! They wanted another full upgrade price again! Forget that!

The other issue that I have is that somehow the coding of ST4 is different than ST3. I usually use ST3 and 4 in our 32 bit RB. ST3 is no problem with jBridge. ST4 not so much. Had to contact Joao (jBridge's developer) and he helped me through a few tweaks in jBridge such that ST4 would save the "Multi's" correctly in RB when a song is first saved rather than having a second step to pull up a separate Multi when each song loads.

SO your question is, would I buy ST4 again? Maybe not. RT's are way better, my hardsynths fill in well for special sounds, ST4 comes in 3rd.

Thanks for that review of ST4, sounds somewhat disappointing and gives me something to think about.

Jeff, this is how I roll. I have my Win10 OS and all programs on the C:\ SSD drive. I use the D:\ HD 7200 rpm as my multimedia drive. All the Realtracks/Realdrums are on D:\BB. It's a good combination for me as multimedia files like video, audio, pics are all larger file size and HDs are still larger drive space for the $$$ than SSDs.

C:\ 1 TB SSD
D:\ 2 TB HDD

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
