Hi, fellow songsmiths. I was just wondering if you have set patterns that you follow when writing lyrics. Do you let the song suggest the title or do you prefer to think of a title and let the song flow from that?
Seems there are many songs that are based on famous sayings - for instance: A Stitch In Time Actions Speak Louder Than Words Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea
Then there are song titles that are a play on words, such as: Cool Britannia Katherine of Oregon Ohm Sweet Ohm
There's no shortage of songs that pose tricky questions e.g. What Becomes Of The Broken-hearted? Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?
Or this title I just made up: Can I Still Get To Gettysburg If I Don't Know The Address?
Any thoughts?

My music may not set the world on fire but if it causes a glow in just one person's heart, it has all been worthwhile
Most to all of my songs come from a single idea/subject that grabbed me or a phrase that came to mind. Some personal examples: "Just Do It"...."She Sizzles"..."I'm Going That Way Too"..."I've Had A Good Life"...."Dark Forest". Just phrases I that came to mind that I thought would be worthy of fleshing out a good lyrical story into a song.
Once the idea/subject/title is in stone I won't deviate from that subject and try to make sure that each verse/pre-hook/chorus stays on topic. I'm not one to write randomly with unrelated phrases or lyrics just because they sound cool that add nothing to the song's specific subject.
Been giving this some thought recently. I know that a song title is generally not patented or copyrighted, although short phrases in advertising can be, I think Nike has "Do it" . But do song titles have to be original? After all it is just a string of words. How many unique combinations can actual exist?
When I hear a cleaver and creative lyric my fisrt thought is - "wish I would have written that" and my next thought is "...well there's one more thing I can never use".
So why would folks re-use popular song titles for their songs. If I were to write a song about past regrets or love lost or remorse - the last title I would chose would be "Yesterday". Is it just me?
If this is off topic - nevermind. It has just been something on my mind.
This is an interesting topic - sometimes, song titles just come really naturally. It is also safe to say there is a certain weight behind having an iconic and unique song names. For example: Stairway To Heaven, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Bohemian Rhapsody, I Am The Walrus. It helps cement your song as instantly distinct even before you hear it.

Perhaps to get better placements on search engines?... BTW... Another title creation technique is take to an old title & add to it... Old Title: Yesterday New Title: Yesterday, When I Was Young (Writer Charles Aznavour)
New Title: Finding Yesterday (Written by Billy Arr & David Allds
Do a search & you will find more... Or you could change the title from... "Yesterday" to "Yes Today"

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
