Hi

Sorry, I couldn't think of how to word the subject more clearly, but basically, if I have a section that's repeated, let's say bars 1-8, and I want to edit bar 4 on the repeat only, how do I select that bar?

Or do I need to not use repeats if I want to do this?

Many thanks!

Mike

I would not use up my only allowable repeat to do that for a savings of so few bars, nor do I know if you can even do what you are asking anyway.

Hi Mike,

At the top of the "Bar Settings" window, there's an option to select the chorus. (See image below.)

I often do this (I think) with my music
Firstly, I build my song in linear form, that is 'without any repeats'. Then I edit the specific bar that needs to be changed.

I then use repeats / 1st 2nd endings to give me the fake sheet printout that I need.
Now the song will play accurately, but the printout will likely be incorrect. This doesn't worry me, but it may be a show stopper for you

Hi Matt, thanks for your reply.

I appreciate it's a slightly different topic to my original question, but I seem to be able to use as many repeats as I want?

Hi Noel. Thanks as always for your response.

I know you can change bar settings per chorus, but can you change the settings within the same chorus for a repeated section?

E.g.

1 2 3 4
||: | | | :||

(I don't know if this will display properly when I post this, but basically it's 4 bars repeated)

Let's say I want to mute a track on bar 3 of the above example, but only the second time around - is it possible to do that?

Ah, that's an interesting work-around. I might give that a try! Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I think that would only apply to the second chorus, though. It wouldn't have any effect on the first chorus within a repeated section.

I think I'll just write it out without using repeats if I need to change something in a bar during a repeated section.

Hi Mike,

Yes, unfolded layout is the best way to go in this situation.

Personally, I always lay my songs out unfolded as it gives me much better control. This is in keeping with the notion of an orchestra score rather then the 'sheet music' notation approach of repeats, DC al coda, etc.

Regards,
Noel

Yes, I agree.
Noel's suggestion is the best way to go for your specific requirements.

Hi again, Mike.

I was thinking about this as I was driving around today. I think that there is a way to add effects in repeated sections while keeping the repeats.

1. Expand the repeats by deactivating "Fake Sheet Mode" (see #3 on the image below). This will allow you to see the repeated sections (they will be in grey).

If you desktop view is different from mine, use CTRL+T to switch views.

2. Now edit the bar that you want to change.

3. Reactivate "Fake Sheet Mode" to contract the display.

4. Unfreeze tracks, generate and play.

Does this work? I haven't tried it so I'm not sure... it is worth testing, though.

Regards,
Noel

Noel,
This is essentially what I suggested earlier. Repeats and endings, as well as fake sheet are purely print functions. They do nothing to the underlying song. So looking at the song in notation mode will show you each bar as it is played, not the repeated bar as in fake sheet mode.

Fix or alter the specific bar or bars as needed. You cannot delete or add a bar, only change. You can add more bars, perhaps an extra repeat, or a coda, but you will probably have to adjust the repeat / endings dialogue

Then, as you say, "reactivate fake sheet"

Hi Dave,

Thank you for the clarification. I've never used repeats, etc., other than to try and help people understand how they work. Because of this, I don't know the underlying subtleties like you do.

(I've been watching your comments for years and it's through you that I picked up how to use repeats, first/second endings, etc. Thank you for that, too smile )

Regards,
Noel

You're welcome
Lyrics are important to me - I just wish that BIAB did a better job of presenting them.
I'd love to beta test the notation. There are many problems that have never been fixed

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
