Someone was asking a trial version of Band in a Box. It was my understanding that there never was a trial version because of the unconditional 30 day refund policy. Then someone turned up with this link. http://www.stagepass.com/download/bandinabox.html Is this legit or should I warn the person about it.

Thanks.
Annette

Hi Annette

I have done security searches and the the vendor - Musicstudiodirect - appear to be ok (with a 100% approval) as they are selling BIAB and other music products - but the link is out of date and refers back to PG Music

The free download trial is BIAB 2009 - and has limitations such as you are not able to save anything

As far as I can remember there was a time when you could download a trial version with limited features and probably the previous version

Hi Nutty,

Before Realtracks, BIAB used to have a demo version. That was how I first discovered the program. I followed the download link from the website you listed and it took me to PGMusic - so the link is safe. I didn't find a demo, though. As you have pointed out above, these days, PGMusic no longer have a demo of BIAB because customers can try the product obligation free for 30 days.

It might be possible that there's still a demo of a much older version of BIAB out there on the internet somewhere. If so, it will be MIDI only. If your friend does manage to find that, tell them that the sound is very different these days because of the Real instruments.

Regards,
Noel

Okay, thanks Noel. It says it is the 2009 version which is fairly recent. Also, "This time limited demo of Band-in-a-Box version 2009 is fully functional except that the Save features, Notation, Soloist/Melodist, and accessory plugins have been disabled. "

Funny thing... their "download" link seems to be a link back to our website, where there is no actual demo version available.

The page they linked to used to contain a demo a while back, but it was for the 2007 version.

Thanks for the heads-up.

PGMusic used to provide a "trial version" of Band-In-A-Box that was limited in what it could do. It was also usually a version or two behind the current shipping version. Now, they provide "video demos", which doesn't let you install the program, but lets you watch videos about the program and see how the program works and what it does. I suspect it's because of the RealTracks and RealDrums. If they provided a trial version, it would probably only be MIDI to avoid extremely large downloads. The 30-day money-back guarantee, however, gives you the opportunity to purchase and receive the whole shebang to try for 30 days. Return it for a refund if you are dissatisfied; however, I suspect most do not.

That website is not updated and the link is obviously from a time when PGMusic did indeed have a demo.

With the addition of RealTracks, the demos were terminated.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
