Hi Folks.

This had been happening to me for some time now, I hope someone can help.
I have my Halion or Kontakt loaded as VST in BIAB. At times, to bring it up it works as it should. I click on "Plugin" button on top, it brings menus: Plugin Dialog, Default Synth etc. when I click on them it goes to the plugin or dialog just like it should...

And at half of the time, nothing would happen if I click on the same buttons, in same session they were just showing up. It is like clicking on dead links... Absolutely nothing happens when I click "plugin dialog" or "default synth". It is not "behind" the BIAB window. I feel it is some sort of wicked hide and seek game. Can someone please shine a light on this for me? This is just driving me nuts.

Thank you!

Hi Misha,

This sounds like there might be an open window of some kind hiding behind the VST settings window.

To see if this is the case, next time it happens, press ALT+TAB and you should be able to see if anything is open but not visible.

I've noticed that this behaviour you describe occasionally happens in BIAB when dialogue windows are minimised rather than closed and the minimising process hides them.

Regards,
Noel

Hi Rustyspoon

I had the same problem. The reason is “screen resolution”.

Some screens are bigger than others. Or smaller, or have a different length-to-height ratio.

Windows software is mostly indifferent to screen resolution or width-to-height ratio. Meaning, the UI (user interface) adapts to any!

Yet, some softwares, including a lot of notation programs and earlier versions of Kontakt are not “resolution indifferent”.

This means they display some odd behavior depending on screen driver, format or settings.

There are two “solutions”
*change your screen resolution
*always close your vst screen using the x in the upper right corner. Never let it “disappear” to the background by clicking another part of the screen or using alt-tab. (I used to forget it all the time and got frustrated)

I managed to find a screen resolution were this strange behavior didn’t occur. Alas, two things happened
*other software seemed to be troubled by the new settings.
*for some reason restarting the laptop or performing updates made the screen resolution return to some default setting that was hidden deep in some part of the register. (A dark and barren place, hidden deeply in your OS)

I had the same problem with laptops as different as an Ms Surface and an early Asus with touchscreen. Nowadays, my Surface 3 doesn’t seem to have this problem. Surface 4 doesn’t either.

Maybe the real solution for me was this:
I use loopbe as virtual midicable in Biab, going to standalone Kontakt. You have to start two softs to be able to play, loopbe starts automatically. But this is a more satisfying solution. Even if the screen problem no longer occurs, I stick to this method. (Midiyoke or other virtual midicables work well, also)

Ditch the vst plugin, disable it and send midi out from biab.
Downside is that most software doesn’t know general midi. In that case, it only works for people like me who only use brush drums and upright bass sounds....I disable any Gm or midi bank or sound messages and play my guitar or piano to bass ‘n drums only.

Sorry for the long answer. This problem got me so frustrated in the past, I must have tried just about everything. And I wanted to share my findings...

Hope it helps you out.

Noel, Dzjang
Thank you for the help!

Funny thing, after I wrote this, magic disappearance has stopped. But I know it will come back, like it did 100 times before. I will save this topic and when it starts to misbehave, I will try some of your solutions. I think you both might be right. Meaning, now I have a feeling it might be GPU related as Dzjang mentioned, but it could be revived by ALT+TAB per Noel's suggestion. Will post back if I find solution.

P.S. It is only happening in BIAB, not in DAW.

If you want the vst to be free of the claustrophobic confines of the Biab window use
MiniHost or PluginFlipFlop

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
