BAIB 2019; WIN10

When I press the Generate & Play button BIAB is setting ALL chords to have a 'rest'.

The style I'm using is "Intimate Jazz Bossa w/ Trio"

Any ideas?

TIA

That's not normal.

Whenever BIAB does something you know to be strange, do Options, Return to Factory Settings. Save yours when it prompts (check the checkbox and select 'Return Most' settings).

Reboot your PC and restart BIAB and test. Let us know.

Thanks for the fast response. I've tried the Return to factory settings option and a reboot. Unfortunately the same thing's happening.

As far as this issue goes I suspect I'm going to have to try from scratch with the same style, re-input the chords and see how it goes. Bizarre though and I don't like being beaten by it ;o)

(I must say I'm always loathe to try the return to factory settings in any app as I really don't like having to then re-set to the customisations that I like. So now I have that blasted horrible count-in set, plus I'm sure a few others which I won't recall having set!!! smirk )

Understood, me too. That's why I save my settings before doing the Return. Especially when the process didn't fix the problem, I'm back to my settings quickly.

Now, about the problem, let's examine it further.

Have you updated to Build 634?

Does this happen on any other song?

Does this only happen with that style (_CONTACT)?

Is your tempo at or close to 85 bpm?

Is your time signature 4/4?

When you say "all chords have a rest", exactly what does that mean? No sound? Does each chord appear with a single period after it?

Have you updated to Build 634? Yes

Does this happen on any other song? No . . . but, see below

Does this only happen with that style (_CONTACT)? So far, yes. Tried briefly with some others & this didn't occur

Is your tempo at or close to 85 bpm? Interestingly, yes.

Is your time signature 4/4? Yes

When you say "all chords have a rest", exactly what does that mean? No sound? Does each chord appear with a single period after it? Each chord has a single period after it.

I've now realised this occurs after I've defined a Sub-style c/d and changed to one of those two styles. After I click Generate and play every chord will be set to have a rest (a single period after the chord letters).

OK. I understand you to say every chord in the song has a single period after it (that you didn't put there), which means every chord is marked with a Rest and you will hear no chord sound.

When you defined the C and D substyles, what styles were they?

That was a good idea to post the song - I was about to ask.

What you see - those dots - are NOT rests. I don't know what they are (yet) but a rest would be a period, lower down; these dots are midway up the letter.

Also, I note that the song loads without the dots, and the dots are added only after it regenerates.

I hear the chords fine in your song.

Give me some more time with it.

Oops. Now it isn't sounding.

I tried to enter a new chord with a rest in measure two, and it appears the same way as all of your chords. Now, no sound.

Then I loaded one of my songs and it plays fine.

I don't see anything loaded in your song that's unusual, either in song or bar settings or MIDI Monitor.

Unless someone else finds the answer, give PG Music Support a call or chat tomorrow, and reference this thread.

I loaded your song and got a message that "_CONTACT.STY" was missing. It made a substitution. I just have the basic BIAB Pro right now, so I'm assuming that's why the style was missing.

However, I never saw any dots. None at all. And your chords played correctly. I'm new to BIAB, but a logical guess would be that your problem is in a style, very possibly the one I was missing.

Did anyone find a solution to this problem, please? I am using Windows BIAB 2020 and spent several hours this morning trying to figure out why I suddenly have rests appearing in every bar of my song. After they appeared, I went through the song clearing all the rests so that I just had the black chord symbols, pressed regenerate, and all bars reverted to red chord symbols with dots again.

I did create two new c and d sub-styles earlier in the session this morning, but everything seemed to be working as anticipated for a long time after I did this. After playing the song through several times, I then pressed regenerate/play and rests appeared in every bar.

After a couple of hours of trial and error, I eventually managed to get the song to play despite every bar still showing the chord with dot in red, but something is clearly amiss.

Nickl,

Does this happen with all your songs or just one of them?

If it's just one file, it might be a corrupted file. This is rare but I have had it happen to me a couple of times over the years.

If you open the song in Realband and generate it, is the behaviour the same?

Regards,
Noel

Noel - No it hasn't happened before, but then I haven't been making full use of BIAB's features previously. It could well be a corrupted file - I'll start again and see what happens.

Thank you.

If it turns out to be a corrupted file, sometimes opening it in Realband and then saving it as SGU/MGU with a new name can add new life to the file.

This doesn't always work but it's worth a try.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
