Hi, all: First off, I just listened to a host of impressive tunes tonight. Seriously great stuff . . . and this new offering likely pales in comparison. But here we go nonetheless . . . with fingers-crossed. I started writing this song when I was vacationing in Italy this past summer. The hook/refrain came to me while on a boat out of Porto Santo Stefano, sailing along the Maremma coast. It took these past few months to finish the lyric and tune--and a bit longer to find its way into a BIAB production. I had thought I'd keep the production fairly stripped, but then came across the Breathe Reso Acoustic Folk Rock song style . . . and went with it . . . though I subbed out and added some. Hope it's worth the listen. Here's the song:RISING FROM THE DEAD Here are the lyrics:
Driving north to nowhere out of Rome from the grasp of ghostly fingers round my soul. With every turn and every mile my face recalls a buried smile that hints of freedom I have never known in the rolling fields and hills that lie ahead . . . As I drive along these Tuscan roads I’m rising from the dead. Gliding cross the blue Tyrrhenian Sea— the sun and wind upon my skin, and I can breathe. In the boneyards I forgot the things I am and those I’m not, and here I’ve found the better part of me. So the emails on my phone all go unread . . . As I sail along the Maremma coast I’m rising from the dead. And I’m trying to leave it all behind; in my mind, to break the ties that bind. So the New York City push and pull that tears my soul and wears my will it somehow seems to vanish more in time, as I find me in my head . . . Underneath these Tuscan skies I’m rising from the dead. Some day that life will call me home and lay its claim to my body and my bones. And if that’s meant to be somehow it don’t matter much to me right now, I’m worlds away in a heaven all my own. ‘Cause the sun just turned the sky Barolo red . . . As it dips beneath the Tuscan hills I’m rising from the dead. And here's the band:
Bass: 3121 PopHalfNotes Push Drums: Real Blues Rock Guitar: Acoustic Strum 362 Guitar: 12 String Acoustic 1118 Mandolin: Background American Folk 3150 Accordion: Rhythm Pop8ths 1752

It took until the 2nd stanza to catch up with the rhyming scheme - from tehre all was sweet sailing for my lazy brain. This is very cool and the minimal backing works really well. Excellent.

Yeah! I love the mood you set with this. Great job on the write, I love songs that take you to another place.
Nice production and mix, and I've always been a fan of your vocal.
Very much enjoyed, went along well with my first cup of morning coffee.

This rolls along beautifully both lyrically, with nice details in the travelogue, and musically. I like this style for the song and, no surprise your vocals command attention ( Whatever you`re doing on the processing- its working to a T for your voice). Very good work... and uplifting- as the title suggests!

That is awesome work Deej!! As I was listening I was hoping for a powerful chorus to come in and follow those great first couple of verses and you sure delivered it! Great instrumentation choices with a super vocal! Perfect title!! Thanks, Torrey

Hello DJ,
I think that everyone who has ever been to the Tuscan (during the right time of the year) will agree that this is one of the most beautiful places on earth. (And that's even without mentioning the wine and the food...). So 'Rising from the Dead' is such a good phrase for describing what one MUST feel when he's there if he doesn't have a heart of stone..
And you really wrapped this feeling in a wonderful song - the backing track is the right one, the lyrics are most beautiful and your singing (especially when your voice is climbing the Tuscan heights) is really remarkable.
A brilliant production which gave me a most pleasant listen.
All the ebst,
Stefan

A great write from what seems to have been a great experience for you... I believe you have deftly captured your personal experience... And conveyed it to me... So that I feel like I was there on your journey... Very nicely done!

Really, really like this. An excellent song. I think what jumps out most for me are the moments when I'm feeling like I'm listening to a performance at something like Austin City Limits. There are several points where the music transcends the instruments, and you just get lost in the song - only the best songs can do that.
Its great as is, but if you were to add more layers and some backing vocals or make it a duet with a smooth but crystal clear voice in the vein of Leann Rimes or Carrie Underwood I think it would be completely different but really cool, especially those parts where the vocals soar into the high ranges. As I said, just an idea, but with a song this strong, the possibilities for variations are endless.

Terrific song and a terrific voice, I enjoyed it a great deal. Nice to learn a little geography in the process, you got me looking up Maremma and Barolo.

Ed, Greg and TuneMonger:
Thanks to you each for the listen and supportive feedback. Means a lot!
Ed: Yeah, some backing vocal could make this shine more . . . just wasn't sure about the where and how, so kept it simple. I ended up going bigger than I intended originally on the music tracks, so also didn't want to weigh it down with additional vocals. But it's worth revisiting when I get some space and better skills.
Greg: My last trip this summer was #5 for me . . . and I can't wait to go back. Curious . . . where'd you go?
TuneMonger: Wine-o-philes can likely call me out on this song. Barolo is from the Piedmont area . . . It would be more in keeping with the song to sing "Brunello red" but "Barolo" just sang better--dunno why. So I went with it.
My best to each of you,
Deej

Great write, very beautiful vacation images full of freedom and happiness. The same feel of ease can be heard in your vocals. I like the folky rhythm, like marching along old stone alleys. Nicely mixed, accordion, strumming and mandolin create a sunny feeling. Catchy classic chorus, getting better on each listening.

Strong imagery that would lead to a powerful video!
Thanks for sharing what your vacation spawned.
Nice band, vocals, production and a mix that sounds superb on the monitors.

I hate to have to bump this song up at this point, but I’d hate even more not taking the time to thank you for your listen and kind comments. I got busy right before Christmas with family coming in for the Holidays. I had thought I responded to everyone, but apparently not. So, only right to do so now.
My apologies for delayed response—your comments and support are so very much appreciated. Glad you all seemed to enjoy the tune.
Regards to you all,

Hi Deej, This is.... Where do you get your ideas from??? Does taking vitamins help? I'd love to get some of this kind of inspiration! These lyrics are extraordinary.... actually I'd better back up a bit first Firstly, I'm a huge fan of AABA and you've presented a variation of it that I cannot recall hearing but it worked s-o-o-o-o well. The format I usually use is A1, A2, B, A3, Instrumental, B(repeat), A3(repeat). What you did by leaving out that third A-section before launching into the instrumental was a songwriter's equivalent of Van Gogh's expertise. Just wow! And that B-section... man it soars! Your band is superb and your production and your singing are breathtakingly excellent. As I sat here travelling with your lyrics, you lifted me out of the mundane and into a world of delight. It was such a good journey. The whole concept of being caught up in the death-throes of a rat-race existence and managing to survive by allowing one's imagination to bring some Tuscan escape and freedom is wonderful. I wish I had your ability to craft such tantalising, eidetic imagery. You've really pulled out all the stops with this one. All the best, Noel

Noel and Marty,
So glad you liked the tune . . . and sorry for the delayed reply. I'm finding it hard to settle down and spend some time here . . . plus the forum is moving sooo fast--so many new posts, with so many great songs . . . amazing to see. But, again, happy mine resonated. It's one of those personal songs, that every time I listen to it, bring me back to that moment when the song was born . . . under a beautiful blue sky, motoring along the Maremma coast.
Noel,
You are being very humble--you have that ability in spades. I don't write many "personal" songs, but this one was is about as close as it gets. On the boat, in the moment, removed from everything, I truly felt like I was indeed rising. Sadly, it was only temporary, LOL . . . but good while it lasted.
My best to you both,
Deej

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
