Greetings -
There was an active shooter at Pensacola Naval Air Station (NAS) this morning. Four are dead (including the shooter) and a number of others are being treated at area hospitals. I see that it has made national news.
I work about 10 miles away from the main base at Saufley Field (which is part of the NAS system of bases here). We are in shelter in place mode until an all-clear is given and the main base is closed to all but essential personnel for the rest of the day.
I live about 3 miles from where I work, so luckily, I didn't even have to go by main base (although I generally go to meetings there multiple times a week).
We are still monitoring the situation. Please keep all those affected in your thoughts and prayers. Pensacola is a training base and there are lots of family members, retirees, DoD Civilians, and federal contractors here, as well. It's a very active place; this kind of event hits this small town pretty hard.

John, my sister-in-law lives in Panama City Beach and part of her job is cleaning that air base. My wife will be calling her tonight to make sure she is OK.

When I walked into the kitchen this morning, our Echo Show on the kitchen counter had a blurb up about a shooting at NAS. I assumed that the story was more rehash of the story out of Pearl from 2 days ago. Just as the screen was going away, I realized that I was looking at a Photo of Baptist Hospital and the the story was of local origin rather than national.

That's a beautiful part of the state (we in the south call it L.A. for Lower Alabama).
I did a gig in Fort Walton Beach many years ago and loved the white sand beaches.
I feel for the families of the deceased.
Life is so fragile, you just have to live each day to the fullest because you never know when it will end.

It definitely is unnerving, especially when it's in an area I frequent.
I don't understand what makes people behave that way. And this happened the day after we received notice to take our annual active shooter training. Ah, the irony.
I remember living in the Northern Virginia area during the DC sniper timeframe. What was scary was realizing that we had recently been to all the places where someone had gotten shot. Folks were scared to just fill up their cars with gas during that period.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first?
