Hello everyone,,
I am an amateur who occasionally performs keyboard at parties with BIAB live and I would like some advice about how to deal with audience noise. I want to keep the volume down so as to still allow conversation (there is usually no dancing) so I end up providing background music which is fine by me. The problem is that as the audience noise increases I have difficulty hearing my BIAB backing and sometimes my playing gets out of step with the BIAB song. I use two Bose Compacts.
I believe that some bands use a monitor facing the performers but I don't want another speaker. I wondered about using some small unobtrusive headphones instead of a monitor. I have a mixer that allows me to control the phone volume separately.
How do other people tackle this problem?

I think most performers tackle the problem with a small monitor. Meaning another speaker. Monitors are far better solutions than headphones and you don't normally see headphones on live performances with the exception of a keyboard player or drummer that are running tracks and need to hear the click track.
Headphones set you apart from the audience ambient noise that is beneficial to performing well. Don't isolate yourself from your audience.
An immediate advantage you may find in your particular setup is that with the inclusion of a monitor, you may be able to turn down your FOH main mix a bit so your volume doesn't impact conversations as much as they do currently. There's no doubt you have to include what you need to hear in your current setup and that can effect both speaker location and direction and also the overall volume settings.
A small powered speaker coming out of your mixer through an aux out is ideal for your situation and is the correct setup over using the headphone out jack. It gives you complete control of what you hear and that can be separate from both content, volume and effects you send to your FOH mix.
I'm sure you'll find a monitor to be a small sacrifice compared to the benefits to both you and your audiences.

When I was gigging we used hot spot monitors mounted on a mic stand. Each musician had them at ear level so the monitor volume did travel into the crowd. PS - I know the condition that you are describing. My wedding band many times had to play during dinner and the drunker they got the louder they got. Those hot spot monitors saved us a number of times.

Yeah... I was thinking that you need the hot spot monitors.... they have built in power amp so it's an easy solution. Feed them from any headphone output and you should be good. Start low and turn them up as needed. They can get quite loud and they are fairly directional so you won't get bleed to the audience.
I used them for a time in a band and also at a church where I played. Pretty cool. On a mic stand you can get them nice and close.

One of the advantages of the Bose compacts is that you can place them just about anywhere. So another option would be to place one of them closer to you and maybe slightly behind but still feeding the audience. Using it as a partial monitor. I remember one party I did I used a small Roland cube amp that had a vocal setting as a monitor that worked great I also have a small kustom 3 channel powered speaker that works like that I have used. https://www.guitarcenter.com/Kustom/Kustom-KPC4P-Powered-Monitor-Speaker-1314371188522.gc?rNtt=Kustom%20&index=7Price wise these work pretty good

I often use a Kustom KPC4P, Keep in mind that if you plug in to the 1/4" input you will get a fairly low volume level. So you will need to have a significant output level from whatever your sound source is. I run it from the monitor out of a Yamaha StagePas 600 which works quite well with 1/4" to 1/4" cable. The XLR input is a lot hotter than the 1/4". When I use a 1/4" to XLR cable or a 1/4" cable to passive DI box to XLR cable and connect to the XLR input, even with just an electric guitar (no preamp) it puts out a much higher level. So I bring that special cable with me in cases where the gig is noisy.
