I am trying to import a .wav file into an existing BIAB song. I clicked on File - Import Audio (WAV, WMA MP3, WMV...), selected the .wav file and hit open, then clicked OK in the Import Audio window. I see the little blue spinning wheel for a few seconds, then nothing. No file is imported. Nothing shows up in the mixer and no audio track plays.
What version are you using ? I know the current version has a error if you drag a wav into the audio track as it was just fixed to allow for dragging of compressed files.
I just tried importing an audio file into an existing BIAB song and it worked for me. I have BIAB 2020 and I'm running update #709 at the moment.
Some thoughts that might help...
1. Click on "Help | About BIAB" and see if you are running build #709 -- this is the latest build released to the public. The build number will be in brackets after your BIAB version. For example: version 2020 (704)
If you are not running this build, go to the url below, download the latest build and manually install it.
2. When you selected the "File | Import" option, did you get the window shown on the top image below and were the settings the same as I've highlighted on the top image.
3. Did you double-check the WAV file to make sure that it definitely contained audio material? Also, have you tried it with a second audio file to see if the problem persists.
4. Did you try importing audio into both BIAB64 and the 32-bit BIAB?
5. Once the import was complete, did you get the "Audio" controls/track in the Mixer window (see the bottom image below).
Out of curiosity, was the WAV file 16-bit and 44,100 Hz?
1. I have Version 220 (706). I tried both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. The song I'm trying to import it into was originally created in BIAB 2018, though I doubt if that should make a difference.
2. I did get those windows, yes, and with those settings. I clicked on OK in that window.
3. I did check the WAV file to make sure that it definitely contained audio material and I tried it with a second audio file and had the same problem.
4. The mixer shows an audio track, but it is empty and grey, not orange.
I'm not sure if it is 16-bit and 44,100 Hz. It's the vocal track from my DAW (Mixcraft) and I can't seem to find that information. I did just try importing a .wav file with those attributes, and it didn't work either.
I don't know if this is relevant but, when I load the 64 bit version of BIAB, I get the following message in the lower right corner."Windows Audio Session Error Input and Output sample rates must match. Audio input (recording) will be disabled. Error message is 9997."
I'll try updating as you suggest and see if that helps. I want to import vocals into BIAB so I can try out the new thickening and harmony stuff on them. I would do it in my DAW, but the DAW plug-in doesn't work in Mixcraft - a topic for another thread .
Thanks for the information on the Windows Audio Session. This is called the WAS driver in BIAB. It could certainly be causing the issue and is worth testing.
To do this, change your audio driver to MME. This is found under "Audio | Audio Drivers/Settings".
If the file was created in BIAB, it should be fine.
Another, manual, way to load the audio is to put it in the same directory as your song file and give it the same name as your song file but with a .wav at the end.
For example: If you song is called The long way home.SGU... copy the audio you want to load to the same directory that "The long way home.SGU" is stored in and rename the audio to The Long Way Home.WAV. Restart BIAB, load "The long way home.SGU" and BIAB should now pickup the audio file.
Thanks again, Noel. I updated to 709 and tried again with the same result. Then I tried opening the SGU file and saving it under a different name. When I reloaded it, I was able to import audio successfully. So, it would seem that the issue might be related to trying to do this in BIAB 2020 with SGU files created and saved in the 2018 version of BIAB. I was still getting that same error message, but it didn't seem to be what was causing this particular problem.
One other thing I'm having difficulty with is those 4 numbers in the Import Audio File window. I want to start the imported audio at the beginning of the song's 4 bar intro, after the drum stick count in. Do you know what I should enter in that first box?
The key to the numbers is in the brackets following the word "Time". This means, that, going from left to right...
1. The first box is chorus number (if the song has multiple choruses). Leaving this set to "1" is the beginning chorus.
2. The second box is bar number. The 2-bar count-in in BIAB is given bar numbers -1 and 0 so that the song starts at bar 1. So if you want to start the song at the beginning of the intro (and I'm guessing that that's after the 2-bar count-in), you'd set this to 1 and not leave it as -1.
3. The third box is the beat number. So if you want the audio to load on the first beat of the bar, this should be 1.
4. The fourth, and final box is "tick" number. This represents partial beats. In BIAB, each quarter note beat has 120 ticks. If you want the audio to start at the beginning of the beat, set this to 0. If you want it to start halfway between beat 1 and beat 2, you'd set box 3 to 1 and set this fourth box to 60, etc.
Given what you've said, it sounds like the numbers you need are... 1 1 1 0
It's half fixed at the moment but when it's fixed you'll be able to drag and drop the audio directly into the audio track at any bar by enable "Snap" first then to access the audio window click the ACW icon or Audio Edit icon.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
