Hello everyone,
I'm a newbie. I've had biab for about 4 weeks and am enjoying it when it allows me to. I have laid down a song using RT/RD and that was simple enough. But, that's it! I am encountering a number of minor problems. I would appreciate any assistance. First off, everytime I try to change my audio settings, my Window says that it encountered a problem and will have to shut down. I answer OK and Puff! It's gone. Of course, my change never gets done. I want the change to show that my system supports GM2 since I purchased the Forti DXi. Any suggestions. Thanks. (Problem 1)

A couple of thoughts spring to mind about what I'd try. This might or might not fix your problem.

1) If you are running ASIO as your audio driver, for the moment, change back to MME. (Opt. >> Midi/Audio driver setup)

2) Make sure that MIDI Mapper is not selected as the MIDI output driver.

3) From the "Synthesizer / Soundcard" drop-down menu, select your soundcard (or "Synth Card Not Listed" if you can't find your particular soundcard there.

4) Do not click on GM2 yet.

5) Exit BIAB and restart it.

6) Go back into Midi / Audio driver setup and select "Audio Settings" and then "Edit Plugin Settings".

7) Click on the "Synth Track" tab and double-check that Forte is installed in the top slot.

8) Close Coyote Forte.

9) Keep clicking OK until you are back at the Midi / Audio driver setup box.

10) See if you can put a checkmark in "Use VST/DXi Synth" and, if you can, then select "General Midi 2" under "GM2 Support".

11) You shouldn't need to, but at this point, I'd click OK and then restart BIAB.

Regards,
Noel

Hello Noel,
Thanks for the response. I followed your steps and was able to change to GM2 with no crash, thank goodness. Now do I go back and change the settings from mme to asio?

Hi tagmusic,

Now that we know that it's ASIO causing the problem, you could try going back to it if you want. It might well be that you do not need to use ASIO in BIAB, though. In which case, I'd leave it as the MME driver. I use ASIO mainly for recording purposes as it reduces lag. Other than that, though, I always run MME. Sound-wise, there is no difference between ASIO and MME.

My setup is MME in BIAB and ASIO in RB. If ASIO is causing the problem, it might be worthwhile checking out ASIO4ALL. I'm not sure if that will work with 64 bit operating systems; I think it does. If you do try ASIO4ALL, I've found that it usually takes about 30 seconds to kick-in once I activate "Play" for the first time after opening the host program. After that, it behaves fine.

Regards,
Noel

There's only one reason to use ASIO and that's if you're trying to play a soft synth through BIAB with a MIDI keyboard/guitar controller in REAL TIME. Otherwise there's no advantage & lots of drawbacks as you've found out.

Last night, I mean in the wee hours of the a.m., I was able to record my voice and hear playback in headphones through the TASCAM 144MKII. I did leave it set as MME by the way. Today, however is ahorse of a different color. I am reading the manuals as the forum usually suggests and everything has changed. I follow the instructions, but blindly, perhaps. After loading the TASCAM 144MK and then the Cubase LE4 suggested in TASCAM manual, ain't nothing happening. Of course, I feel like most newbies. That is, I don't what the hell I'm doing at this point. Hmm, I shouldn't infer how newbies feel. Anyway, I look good though with all these manuals in front of me and headphones on. I can't turnaround though because my wife would see a bewilded look on my face. I gotta ask. What is a soft synth or a guitar controller? Not familiar to those terms. Thanks.

You recorded your vocals in which program??

The TASCAM manual may tell you to open the Cubase, but that is only if you want to use the Cubase saoftware.

If you want to use BiaB, ignore the part about opening cubase, it'll only eat resources.
Make sure the Tascam is selected as the audio input device in BiaB and you should be good to go.

If the wife asks what you are doing, just grab a manual real quick and say "I'm studying".

A soft synth is a virtual synthesizer. The Roland VSC which comes with BIAB is a software version of their popular Sound Canvas modules; the "V" stands for "virtual."

A guitar controller is a guitar equipped to drive a synthesizer via MIDI, the Roland GK system, or other means. It is as opposed to a keyboard, wind, or any other type of instrument/controller.

I recorded in BIAB. I'll try your suggestion and let you know how I make out. (I like your suggestion about the manual, but she is too smart.)

Very well. I reset the audio drivers to: input=no midi input, output=GS Wavetable, VST/DXi is checked, Route midi thru is checked, audio drvrs typr is MME. I have a headset on through the TASCAM and an xlr mic in the Left input on the TASCAM. The USB is connected to my tower. I can hear my voice on the input side which is as it should be. On the Computer side I hear nothing which is good. I hit R.Aud in Biab and I can hear the music and the VU shows the meter for the music and my voice as I record in the mic. Stop-Playback and I hear the music. The voice is a distant gravely sound so I know something is not set correctly. I don't what to start guessing because I seem close to what I want to do.
Please help me understand this thing.

If the voice is 'off' you may have conflicting settings in your audio driver bit rates. (Between Tascam and Band in a Box). The point of the audio track is to record voice or instrument in only, not record the output of band in a box, because the next time you hit play it will play the drums twice. Your input meter when band in a box is playing should show only your voice, not spiking to the drums.

Go into the Windows Audio setup and ensure all the volume sliders are at MAX, and adjust your voice input so that when you speak it almost gets in to the red. Note that you might want to set the record track to Mono first, and then try stereo. When trouble shooting this I use an 8 bar nothing song so it happens fast and I can tweak things and get it right.

Good Luck.

Just a comment, since you're not familiar with these terms it sounds like you're very new to the whole concept of digital audio recording. That's ok, so was I about 7 years ago. You need some basic training to go along with the suggestions here. One of our resident experts, Mac, has a website Audiominds go there and click on the "Getting started" tab on the left. Lots of good info about this stuff including what ASIO, MME, a soft synth, a midi controller and lots of other stuff is. Band in a Box, Cubase, Real Band and all the other digital audio workstations (DAW's) out there all use similar basic setups regarding midi devices, audio devices and the like. You need to at least know the definition of terms before you dive in too deep.

Hello Everyone,

I do have an update. Apparently, while speaking wirh PGmusic, I was told there was an update to my TASCAM 144mk version. (2.0) They were helpful in assisting to get in loaded down on my comuter. I had to load winRAR to have this done. Once updated, I was able to record the vocals on RB with no problems. Next I try to put some effects on the voice. Thanks for all the support. I'm sure I'll be back, though.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
