January - Instrumental

The guitars are Native Instruments; the remainder of the instruments are BiaB.

A lot of the flavor comes from the "Raum" reverb, which was a freebie from Native Instruments. I probably went overboard on the effects, but I thought it fit the feel of the song.

Edited in Reaper, with a bit of cut and paste on the cello part. Final processing through the Lurrsen Mastering Console and Ozone Imager 2 to widen the stereo spread.

All feedback welcome! smile

Nice work on this David - really nice use of the vocal realtracks, and I found it flows really really well. I personally didn't think the effects were overboard - I think they fit nicely in the mix. Thanks for sharing smile

Hi David ...

First, you did not overdo the effects. I thinkk they are a perfect blend to your basic tracks. I enjoyed them very much.

This is so pretty. It reminds me of something you might hear in the background of a movie scene in which a character is peacefully reflecting on a pleasant experience or is involved in a good dream.

Thanks for a terrific listening experience. i thoroughly enjoyed it.

David,
very beautiful and meditative piece. Grabbed me right in. You always put a lot of thought behind the process of creating, and very careful not to over-soak composition with the goodness of all the sounds we have at our finger tips. I admire that very much!
Enjoyed it! Thank you for posting.

P.S. There is a minor "something" at 21 sec (fret noise?) not sure if that supposed to be there, otherwise, silky smooth.

David,

Beautiful.

That's really about all that needs to be said. It is simply a beautiful piece. A delight to listen to (several listens, in fact).

An excellent mix.

That acoustic guitar in the beginning is quite impressive (recorded sound-wise). All the instruments sound really good, actually.

A Bravo! on this....

Very nice listen.
Sounds like a soundtrack from a movie.
I like the flow and the shifting instruments.
In my opinion, the reverb fit the mood of the song.
Well done.

Starts out like a slow version of Classical Gas...that's just the NI picking pattern though.
Hints & builds a la I'm Not In Love too.
A really well structured and arranged piece.
Well done.

Well done David...
It sounds to me like it would make a great cinematic piece...
Something comparable to compositions...
I've heard in the Godfather movies...
Or perhaps even Doctor Zhivago smile

BTW...
Thanks again for the magnificent remix you did on "Dreams of You"!

Hi, Alan.

Yes, I was going for a cinematic vibe here.

Personally, I associate that Am(add2) sound with a more pensive emotion. But the great thing about music is by listening, you put yourself into the song, which make the music something even more than what the composer wrote.

Thanks for stopping to listen and comment! smile

Hi, Misha.

Thanks! One think that's great about BiaB is having some really wonderful sounds to be able to place into compositions.

When I was working on this, I'd started by playing the NI Session Acoustic and found a nice chord progression. I then went into BiaB and picked a ton of RealTracks. I had a fairly good idea of what I wanted, but some (like the slide guitar) took me in some directions I hadn't expected.

The end bit is more sparse than I'm really comfortable with, and I was really tempted to add a bit of solo acoustic guitar on top. To be honest, one reason I didn't was because I was having trouble with Reaper's MIDI editor. I might go back and play with it a bit... then again, I should probably call it a day and move on. wink

The squeak you mention is a "feature" of the guitar VSTi that's triggered at high velocity notes. I thought I'd caught them all, but obviously I missed that one. If I re-render this at some point, I'll remove it.

But I only have the free version of SoundCloud, which means I'd lose the nice comments that some folk have posted. cry

Thanks again for your careful listen and comments!

Hi, floyd jane.

Wow! I'm flattered.

And it's good to hear the mix is solid.

I was on the fence about getting the NI Picked Acoustic, but as you noted, it's got a really great sound. Having spent the money, I figured I should justify it by using it in a song.

Thanks for the kind words! laugh

Hi, CaptainMoto.

I actually had some of the more atmospheric cues from thirtysomething in mind. I'm a big fan of W. G. "Snuffy" Walden.

Thanks!

Hi David,

This is stunning.

You have a flair for instrumental compositions and this piece really does highlight your high level of competence. I admire you so much for being able to create, arrange and produce something of this calibre. It's well outside my ability!

Really, really beautiful listening.

All the best,
Noel

Wow!

That is a stunning mood piece.

The word cinematic comes to mind. We could hear it as the
credits run after the final episode of a great contemplative series.

This is an amazing display of talent and tech.

So enjoyable...

David,
Lovely simple fingerstyle guitar to open and whatever you did to the cello it sounds fantastic.
Beginning with a pastoral cinematic feel the pedalsteel moves into a spacier mood.
Very well done; sounds ready for some amazing visuals!

Fantastic work! Cello is a hauntingly beautiful instrument and your instrumental really hightlights that fact. Excellent arrangement, all instruments are selected carefully and introduced and faded very smoothly making this really intriguing piece, something interesting happens all the time - there's no need for vocals etc. to disturb the mood.

Hi, Dave.

I was a bit worried, because I stupidly only mixed on the monitors instead of checking the mix through headphones, so I was a bit worried, especially with the 'verb.

Given that most people listen through 'phones, that's a mistake I shouldn't repeat. blush

Thanks for listening and the feedback!

Hi, Mike.

The style is EZCELLO.STY (Slow EZ Listening Cello), but I only kept the cello. I mostly used the style to help select RealTracks in the right tempo.

Dropping the bass and drum was probably the most dramatic change - it really changed the feel of the music.

Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Have had several listens to this lovely and very well produced piece of music. Enjoyed them all.
Would not have noticed the mix of Ev and Sw parts if it wasn't in the notes.

I think that the use of effects is just right and enhances the composition. I particularly like the emotive Cello which gives the piece a sad flavour, but in a positive way.
It's a lovely instrumental, David.

I think Floyd nailed it: Beautiful - that's all that's needed to be said. Pure ear-candy and I did not notice anything I would have preferred to be different.

Very, very, very good!

Best regards,

Stefan

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

I don't know exactly what you did with the cello, but the results are beautiful, coherent and emotional. The odd move to major here and there gives this some sense of hopefulness, but the overall mood is pure January, indoor, doing the best we can to get through it. What a great piece to end my listening day on.

David,

As the title suggests, I feel winter.
Is a winter storm blowing outside, or is it snowing?
The cello sound and the enveloping reverb sound enhance the atmosphere.
There are traces of ingenuity in the chord progression.
I think it's a bit classical and very beautiful.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

dcuny,

Such a soft, sweet opening that keeps the listener engaged. As others have said, mysterious and on edge. The production is outstanding—very smooth, with perfect balance. As it stands, a terrific backdrop to a movie, short or tv show. .. all the right touches. Well done!

My best regards,

Deej

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
