I'll Never Fall

In composing and producing this song, I was influenced by watching Echo in the Canyon last month. The lake in the song is Lake Michigan being observed from the Michigan coast.

Note on the mix: Recent illness caused a profound hearing loss in my left ear for a few weeks, but now I am recovering most of my hearing; consequently, the mix might be a bit unbalanced. I'm not happy with the way the vocal sits, but I will work on that when I have more time. I should have waited to record this, but I had an itch to scratch.

I used the PAIRDUP style on this, sans the mandolin. I added a strumming acoustic, organ, and the new Brit Psych soloist.

RTs:
RealBass 3120 Bass, Acoustic
RealDrums-DrivingPop8ths
RealGuitar 1681 Guitar, 12-String Acoustic, Fingerpickin
RealStrings 1030 Guitar, 12-String Electric, Fingerpick
RT691 Guitar, Acoustic, Strumming AcRockBright
RT3438 Guitar, Electric, Soloist BritPsycPopBallad
RT2692 Organ, Rhythm ModernPopSlowMike

Lyrics

The sunset kisses the lake
You are standing on the shore
Whitecaps glisten, you are mine to take
But I can’t take it anymore

Yes, you’re beautiful
But I can’t see it through
Please don’t wait for me
I know I’ll never fall in love with you

Orange poppies swim on a wave
You wade in all alone
I’m not the man who can make your final save
I can’t even save my own

Yes, you’re beautiful
But I can’t see it through
Please don’t wait for me
I know I’ll never fall in love with you

I always speak my heart
I cannot pretend
I won’t live in your world
Where summer never ends

Yes, you’re beautiful
But I can’t see it through
Please don’t wait for me
I know I’ll never fall in love with you

I've been eager to hear a new one from you___
It's been over a month :)___
I hope you are feeling better & your hearing continues to improve.

You've written another interesting song__
I especially like the melodic/chordal change you created for the lyrics

"I always speak my heart
I cannot pretend
I won’t live in your world
Where summer never ends"

Very pleasing to my ears.
Get well & write!

Scott,

A pleasant song (well...for everyone except the woman on the other end). An interesting angle. Some nice detail in the lyric to set the scene.

A good band. Nice touches with the solo guitar bits. And the organ. The mix is good.

Well done.

The vocal and arrangement are cool - the psych guitar licks are a nice addition, (I don't know how they've manage to label them psych but hey - they suit this song).
The mix is pretty tidy.
The kick drum is, as seems the norm now, too clicky with not enough thump.
The lyric is an interesting perspective and well written though the use of "save" in consecutive lines stood out as an odd choice.
"I’m not the man who can make your final save
I can’t even save my own"

Nice job, I like the 12 string electric, very Byrdsish. Singing and song were both excellent. Glad your hearing is back, I am dealing with a strange version of tinnitus, it's very annoying for making music. Keep up the good work!

Really enjoyed this.

Sensational vocal delivery, and the entire backing kept just the right feel throughout.

The clever use of the guitar breaks added interest and dimension.

Mix sounds good to me, including the vocal.

Scott,
Sorry to learn about your hearing and glad that most came back!
Beautiful lyrics. Performance & production are very strong. Not sure why you are not happy with the mix, I found it well balanced, and vocals sit nicely. Some of your previous tunes were a bit on high frequency (to my ears)the vocals... This vocal mix listens very well on my studio K702 headphones, which are on the colder side. Enjoyed it! Thank you for sharing.

Scott,
I enjoyed the unexpected lyric perspective and that chiming electric 12 string works well- the whole arrangement including the guitar solo sounds good to me.
Vocals sit where they should to my hearing- the song showcases your excellent folky pipes!

Yep, that's that 12 string sound, all right.

Nicely done - as floyd jane said, and interesting angle on the lyric.

I liked the arrangement, especially the guitar solos pushing things along. And it was really effective when the drum and harmonies came in.

"The sunset kisses the lake

Whitecaps glisten, you are mine to take

That certainly grabs you from the get go! Great write.

Fine vocals and a band choice that really shows off
BiaB's capabilities...in talented hands.

The arrangement build was cool and that solo RT is a treat.

Very nice!

J&B

PS Best to you re the hearing...I (Bud) have struggled for
years with hearing issues. Certainly makes mixing even
more of a challenge! smile

Ezekiel,
Very nice.
Balanced sounded good to me, hope you're recovering well.

I'm a sucker for lake/water songs, I lived aboard my boat six months out of the year for about 30 years .
I've got many fond memories of the Michigan shore.

Thanks

Thanks, Misha. Now that you've said that about the previous vocal EQ, I notice it on some of my older songs. I'll have to go back and readjust the EQ on them.

This is a fantastic write! Your lyrics are outstanding and is your vocal. The guitar leads were a perfect fit! Your backing tracks (super choice of RTs) fit the song like a glove and your mix was super.

This is your best to date IMHO.

Thanks, Robert. Lyrically, I was trying to avoid the usual pop song tropes (which is difficult to do).

A lovely song with strong lyrics and vocals.
I like the jangly electric 12-string Rickenbacker-like guitar backing which is a positive and dominant feature of this song. It is reminiscent of The Byrds, as several people have commented. The guitar breaks and reverb/delay effects are good too.

I know how frustrating it must be for songwriters and musicians to suffer from hearing problems because I periodically suffer from eczema in my ears which can sometimes cause infections. I'm never more miserable than when I'm unable to properly hear the music that I'm trying to create. Glad that your hearing is getting back to normal.

Hi Scott,

After reading all the true and nice words that's being said about your song, I don't know what to add on that!
I can only agree that you made a very nice song with strong lyrics. And, maybe because of my ears, I didn't notice any unstable issues in it. It's a typical, very sensitive, Ezekiel's song and I like it.

Hi Scott,

This is really nice.

I love the groove that you've used and the instruments you have gathered for the arrangement. Your singing fits so very comfortably in amongst the 'band'. The mix is excellent and your vocals shine. I listened on speakers and there's nothing that I'd change.

Another terrific song to add to your already fine collection.

All the best,
Noel

Pretty song!! I can hear the Echo influence (that 12 string folkrock thing/harmonies). Organ works well with the style too! Really nicely done in every way!! Take care. Greg

Balance was fine, to my ears. As good as the bars are today, you can almost just go by them, visually. The song? As I said, masterful w/ great singing.

Ezekiel,

First off, sorry to hear about the illness . . . hope you are well recovered. The song is smooth and engaging. Love the harmonies on this—perfectly done, accenting but not overtaking the lead. Well done. The vocal sits just fine for me. Like the chord changes on that bridge an awful lot. So much to like about this.

All my best to you,

Deej

All my best to you,

Thanks, Deej. I think I have all my hearing back now. Don't know if I can tell anymore. :-)

Hi Scott,

first of all: Congratulations on winning the 2019 award - you really deserve it !!!

I'm always looking forward to your next song, and , again, you did not disappoint me: Lovely tune, very well-sung, nice arrangement and that solo guitar really nails it.

Love that tune A LOT !!!

Take care,

Stefan

This is not a theme heard very often. It's a very fresh take on a "relationship" song....this isn't gonna happen. The progression is very strong, and your vocals have a softness that carries the "message" very well. I enjoyed the listen.

Scott,

A folk rock sound and a 12 string guitar reminded me a bit of The Byrds.
Fine vocals and a band choice are splendid.
It makes me feel America very much.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
