EDIT: rayc, you are a miracle worker! I added a high pass filter, as you suggested below, to my voice track ... wow. Amazing what a simple effect like that can do (if one knows about them in the first place, which I most certainly don't!). THANK YOU - the edited track is at the link below.

I said I wouldn't write for a while now, but I'm afraid that Janice, Bud and Peter F have inspired me, with their cover of See See Rider (a public domain song), to do one of my own - so I stayed up last night and will be late for things this morning in order to cook this little thing up - one of my favourite hymns of all time. Couldn't help sharing - hope you like it :-) and now to get out of the door as soon as possible, I'm late, haha ... :-) Thanks for listening and for any feedback at all! :-)

LYRICS (by Charles Austin Miles):

I come to the garden alone,
While the dew is still on the roses;
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear,
The Son of God discloses.

And he walks with me, and he talks with me,
And he tells me I am his own,
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

He speaks, and the sound of his voice
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing;
And the melody that he gave to me
Within my heart is ringing.

And he walks with me, and he talks with me,
And he tells me I am his own,
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

I'd stay in the garden with him
Tho the night around me be falling;
But he bids me go; thro' the voice of woe,
His voice to me is calling.

And he walks with me, and he talks with me,
And he tells me I am his own,
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

Fine recording, James. Like the use of the Brent Mason guitar work, too.

I love waltzes! Nice work.

The vocal mix is a bit low and boomy, so it's a bit hard to make out the lyric. Your singing is showing a lot more confidence and improvement. But... I suspect there's a higher register in your vocal just waiting to be heard. laugh

No modulation into the final verse? There are rules about doing Gospel songs, you know! wink

I enjoyed this listen.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

The vocal is boomy, probably proximity effect, BUT it's also much more confident and therefore effective.
It's also a little too loud for the mix given the boom.

If you have access to EQ it'd be an easy thing to pop a high pass filter on it.
The arrangement is quite nice.

Very good. I agree about the booming vocal. Your backing tracks are excellent.

This is a diamond in the rough. With a little polish on that vocal it will certainly shine.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.

Thanks everyone! The reason the vocal is boomy is that I added some reverb on it, etc., in Audacity. I was told in the past, on many of my previous vocal tracks, that my voice could do with some reverb - so here I tried to pre-empt that by adding the reverb BEFORE posting the track. Well, maybe I added too much this time, haha ... I'll go back to the original, reverb-less version and see how it compares :-)

dcuny: thanks so much for the compliments on my vocal, but (re: higher register) ... let's not run before I can walk? hahaha. And yes - I forgot all about the "rules for modulating" in a Gospel song, haha ... not that I'm much of a stickler for rules anyway, though, so ... :-) but thanks for your kind words!!!

edshaw and MarioD: thanks! Brent Mason is brilliant on this track, I felt - excellent to have a guitar counter-melodic line to the main melody, no? :-)

Thanks again for listening and for your comments!!! :-)

rayc: see my first post in bold, above. In short: I added a "high pass filter" effect to my voice track, as you suggested above ... what a difference. THANK YOU!

MarioD: see above :-) What are your thoughts on the voice track now (if you have any time to listen to it again and share your thoughts, of course)? The "high pass filter" effect seems to have done a small miracle on it as far as I'm concerned, haha ... would love to hear what you think.

I never stop learning on here :-) THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

Thanks Jim - the credit goes to rayc, though, for suggesting the high pass filter thing :-) Thank you so much for listening and for your feedback!

Much improved, James. rayc does a consistent and good job of coaching. What is the key, James? If you don't mind. Sounds like Amaj. The public domain publication reference on that one is "New Songs of Praise and Power" Hall-Mack (Phila. 1922)

I'm afraid I've done it all in good old C major, Ed ... simply because it's within my voice register! :-)

Cmaj is a good key. Hits most people right in the heart. Sweet singing on those first four bars. The range is from a low of G (I come) to a high of F (tells me I) You nailed them all. A bit of inventive phrasing on the C-D-G7 change (The Son of God dis-clo-ses) adds to interest. Not sure where the sibilance is coming from, but it should go. Maybe one of the voice students will tell us where it comes from. I've heard one of those screens that goes in front of the mike can help. All in all, a fine product.

Thanks Ed! There are indeed a few problems on the track, including sibilance and also some extra "H" sounds that shouldn't be there (I tried to punctuate the phrasing with them, didn't really work!) ... but, all in all, I'm reasonably happy with it! Thanks so much for, as always, great support and very kind words!

James, very nice job on one of the all-time classic hymns! I liked your vocal approach keeping it a little quieter and subdued sounding which works very well with the band you chose! Thanks, Torrey

That was a popular song in the little country churches
I (Bud) attended a LONG time ago.

Thanks for the memories!

Hi James,

I missed this one earlier. I'm real glad that I managed to find it, though.

You've done a great job with this. It's very engaging listening and your presentation is wonderful. You chosen exactly the right instruments to compliment your vocals. I thought your singing was excellent.

You won me over!

All the best,
Noel

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
