No Bed Of Roses https://soundcloud.com/user-427542889/no-bed-of-roses-remix/s-O7fO4I know that several reviewers suggested the previous version was fine the way it was, but I couldn't help tweaking the vocals a little. This time I dispensed with Reaper's ReaVerb and used Vocal Finalizer by Noise Ash, which fattens up thin vox quite nicely. BIAB Style: CELTAIR.STY (Solo Acoustic Celtic Air Guitar) 2475:Bass, Acoustic, HeldSimple Ev 085 1006:Piano, Acoustic, Solo-Accompaniment, PopCaliforniaSlow Ev 085 1814:Guitar, Acoustic, Fingerpicking, Celtic Air Ev 085 362:Guitar, Acoustic, Strumming Ev 085 No drums (Bass & Guitar2 reverb 40; Piano & Guitar1 reverb 60) ADDITIONAL INSTRUMENTS: (Reason 11) Acoustic Grand Piano (solo) Glock Lord of the Strings Violins & Cellos French Horn Ensemble Mixed with Reason and Audacity. Vocals recorded and mixed with Shure PG 57, Behringher Xenyx 1202 mixer, Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB interface and Reaper DAW and Vocal Finalizer (NoiseAsh)

First listen. Fantastic, loved what the Glock did for it! Singing was golden.

To fatten a vocal in Reaper select ReaDelay then Vocal Fattener.
It does a fairly good and subtle job of it.
The PG 57 did a nice job but there're some aggressive 1st sounds that could be automated or addressed with a fast compressor setting.
I kept waiting for the strings to play counter melody or some interesting harmony lines. They do a nice job of support/dressing as is but a little embellishment - not unlike the glock, would've been nice with nice samples like you've used.

Thanks for those tips, Ray. I've looked up the ReaDelay and vocal fattener. Looks a bit more complicated than what I've been using but will give it a try.
Not sure how to go about "fast compression" but wondering if I could crank up compression on my Behringer mixer before recording begins. Do you think that would work?

In ReaDelay I just select the vocal fattener and leave it at that.It adds a VERY, very, very slightly delayed signal to the original which does what a chorus effect does but in a tidier and less obvious way.
Compression going in - yeah I would BUT you can't undo it so it's probably best not too until you're sure about the result. Compression going in is GREAT for bass.
Definitely experiment with the Behri mixer's compressor, (I'm quite a fan of Behringer - I own several Behri items), on draft vocals etc. to find a setting that's smooths things a bit and you can tweak a little in the computer.
If you have a look at any software compressor it'll have an attack setting - the smaller the number, usually, the faster it grabs the dynamic sound - release is how soon it lets go Ratio is how much it compresses - 4:1 is popular for vocals. When I'm dealing with a very dynamic vocal I use two or three instances of gentle compression for a natural sound. If it's rock I'll use a couple - one that's aggressive and one that's gentle.
Of course singing a tight double track is the best fattener if you can do it. There are also some stellar ADT (Automatic Double Track) plug ins that do a fabulous job - the Abbey Road one is GREAT but expensive. There're cheaper & freebie ones out there though.
