Glorious day to you my Music PEOPLE!
So just like the title states. I've tried to get a good answer on this, including from the source with no answer. So does anyone have insight on this:
I would like to record a cover of a song and put it on YouTube. I see lots of other folks doing this. I don't want to violate copyright laws or anything, so is this okay?
The song in question was originally recorded in 1997, so I'm pretty sure it's not public domain yet. Any insight would be helpful.

It's all about who owns the rights to it. Basically it's up to them to protest the song to YT. The covers you see up there just means nobody protested it (yet), other times I'm gone back to a link I had bookmarked and I get a big red display saying the vid is no longer available due to the rights owner telling them to take it down.
They also have rules about posting a certain amount of songs that get flagged, they'll cancel your account. I don't post so I can't give you all the details. Here on the forum PG uses YT as a filter. You can post a cover here if it's already on YT but if it's not no, can't post it here. PG feels if it's ok with YT then it's OK here.

So you go to Harry Fox Agency and pay the license fee and you're safe to rock and roll the cover tunes. AND..... you can post it here on the showcase too if you provide the license number in the post.

What Herb said. Years ago all the cover song we recorded and released via CD or streaming were licensed via Harry Fox. Nowadays we write or co-write our own or dip into the PD but should we choose to post a cover to any platform we would license it. Hey, it’s always good to respect intellectual property! We don’t want anybody making a zillion dollars off an unlicensed version of one of our writes...hahahaha.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first?
