Hi y'all,
When I set the metronom count in to 1234-1234 only the second measure is interpreted correctly. The first bar is played as 1 - 3 only (no click on beats 2 and 4). This happens on ALL settings that have the first mesure set to 1234. Only beats 1 and 3 are audible. The seocnd bar is always correctly interpreted, no matter the setting.
I use Realtracks only. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Sandra

I get the same thing using RT song files. Pure MIDI song files count correctly as 1234, 1234 but RT's are counting 1-3, 1-2-3-4

Does not matter the song. I tried a few of both RT's and MIDI.

Problem duplicated on my end

Since "time immemorial", dance bands and jazz bands have almost always counted off tunes 1-2, 1234. BIAB just carrying on the tradition.

I suspect this is another instance of where the rules are different between RD/RDs and MIDI (but the menu item doesn't indicate that). My guess is they didn't record all the count in variations for the RealDrums. I don't think the RD's honor the selected instrument count-in either (which the MIDI styles do).

I strongly suspect that the count-in generated dynamically for MIDI but is already pre-recorded in the RealTracks audio as a 1-3- 1234 value.

You're not doing anything wrong.

I also suspect that this count-in problem is directly related to the issue you have identified.

It's definitely a bug. There are some 14 different count-in patterns, among them patterns such as '1-3- 1234' and of course '1234 1234'. While raymb1 likely nailed it, a program offering above options should stick to its selection.

Interestingly enough, selecting '1234 1234' or '1-3- 1234' the visual count-in says '1-2- 1234', very much along the traditional lines raymb1 mentioned.

RealDrums mostly follow the selected patterns and are thus likely not pre-recorded, only during the first bar they stick to the traditional '1-3-' pattern, irrespectively of any selected pattern.

It should be an easy fix for PGMusic.

The count-in problem is one of the reasons I choose an A or B fill style drum intro. You can always delete the count-in after the song is finished if you wish.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.

While definitely a disparity between the two displays, I suspect the actual count-in is because no one says "1, 3, 1234", they say "1, 2, 1234", but the selection box indicates on which beat the count-in occurs. Not sure the best way to handle it.

I concur with John. I read 1 - 3 and thought, who says that?

Yes, I also agree. We all say 1-2- 1234, but I was only trying to highlight what beat the word '2' fell on.

Separately, my band once backed a vocalist who brought along an original chart we had never seen before. She counted in "1-2-" "12" and then unexpectedly doubled the tempo of "1234". The 1234 was 4 times faster than the 1-2-

Instead of the anticipated 110BPM, the song blasted away at 220 BPM

The only person who knew the song tempo was the vocalist. We scrambled and got it right, but it was a shock I'll never forget (and a vocalist I never worked with again).

Was she singing Caldonia?

No idea what the song was, but it definitely wasn't Caldonia. I recall the chart had no indication of the tempo, it was just a melody line with chords handwritten on manuscript paper. I certainly never expected such a count-in, and couldn't hand the chart back quickly enough.

The point is -> the visual display says '1-2- 1234' even when the pattern '1234 1234' is selected. Of course nobody says '1-3- 1234'. Yet the visual display might say '1234 1234' whenever that pattern is selected . . .

Ok, thanks. Good to know it's not me, but a bug.
I will have to have aworkaround with a midi count in then. I need this for my YT lessons, when there's a longer pickup melody. I need 1 2 3 4 - 1 (melody pickup) actually.

Thanks for your input!

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
