I just read a thread regarding volume fades.
I learned both a new method as well some useful tips for the method I normally employ in biab.
Testament to both the capabilities of the software and the knowledge of the users on this forum.

As I advance in music production I find the use of a DAW to be indispensable (as is BIAB) in creating a product I like. I'm learning more about the border of responsibilities between biab and the daw.

Today's belief:
Exporting dry tracks with no pan/reverb, none of biab's "automation" (bar settings, fades, mutes, etc) ultimately makes my work easier and creates a better organized project.

Track Levels as close to 0db as I can get them. No clipping. Single file .wav file per track.

Aside: Wish we could get the drums as single tracks per drum.

I do everything else in the DAW. I normally record my instrument (guitar) in the DAW. I can quickly comp multiple takes to produce a part I like.
I can sample 37 different types of reverb, and more compressors than I knew existed, etc if I like.
I can pan, then re-pan, then pan again. Then set them all back to the middle. I can use automation for a variety of features beyond volume.
Bouncing the various output versions and snap-shotting project iterations are just easier in a daw than in biab.

Finally, I know all the manipulations took place in the DAW.

That way I know where the undo button is.

I couldn't do my work without either tool.

I use exactly the same workflow for my MIDI projects.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

I would think most of us who use BIAB and a DAW would do it this way.

To the specific topic of fades, a DAW is the better choice, as you can draw the continuous curve that affects within all measures.

I was on a kick for a while jumping into threads where ever I could to espouse the virtues, similarities and benefits of BIAB replicating many processes and techniques of a modern 8 channel digital multi track recorder. Modern hardware digital multi track recorders may have 8 physical tracks but will have virtual mixdown and master channels that eliminate the necessity older units had to have physical mixdown devices and thus were subject to unavoidable audio signal degradation. The digital signal path of modern day digital multi track recorder places very affordable hardware on a recording signal quality par with DAW's.

One day Dr. Gannon posted a comment right after my post where I'd described some technique or procedure that could be done using BIAB without having to export tracks out to a DAW and then import them back into the BIAB project. Dr. Gannon explained they had developed and released RealBand to more easily, visually and accurately do those type tasks. Matt's example above regarding fades is a good example.

The border of responsibilities between BIAB and a DAW can be blurred but mostly by the artists skill level, product knowledge and workflow comfort level. BIAB software has the sophistication and complexity to do many amazing things but I found it's not a border into an area BIAB users or PGMusic want to cross. For most, there's a clear border and workflow to follow and they maintain a clear relationship between their expectations from BIAB and their preferred DAW.

As for splitting drum instruments; that's still something amiss with the quite nice drumstacks' live recordings.
I almost never use these because of the reverb etc used too.

With Superior Drummer 3 you can analyze these for used sounds, and replace individual instruments to midi controlled samples in SD3.
Tried this a few times, mainly experimenting to copy the grovve used in BIAB.

Maybe there another is a VST tool to do this: Professor(?) VideoTrack might know about the latest developments there ?

You have nailed the “right tool for the job” scenario. As a locksmith and carpenter I deal on a daily basis the need for using the correct tool. You use a planer not a saw to fit the sides of a door, both will do the job, one does it far better. There are many more examples.

BiaB to me is a creation tool. It uses raw material and creates a palate of musical colors to work with. But it does not apply the fine details as well as a DAW does. To make a song really come to life requires many fine detailed tools like the VSTis and automation, and so many more features that DAWs are rich with.

I don’t leave BiaB until I have the style, genre, temp, basic instrument tracks, for the song bed. Then I enter them into my DAW. I can save them and export, or go into DAW plugin mode and drag them. Or NOW I can save the song file, open my DAW, and open the BiaB plugin and open the file there. Listen to it, and maybe add another instrument, or swap out one for another. Drag that to the DAW and start the process of fine detailing. Add my own instruments, add vocals, and such.

Begin the process of panning, volume settings FX, and continue till complete.

One thought I have regarding you original post . I never record near 0db I keep my tracks around -6db. Digital sound is accumulative and begins to clip if care is not taken. With the addition of floating point math that is not as critical but still happens. Don’t worry about over all volume that can be addressed in final the mastering stage.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
