Hey PG fam !

This may be a weird or difficult question but i've been scratching my brain around this for hours..

Is there any way to use the "import chords from MIDI" feature without changing my entire project and removing every plugin and instrument chain I set up ?

I just want to interpret the chords from the MIDI file and nothing else. Lets say for example I have multiple VST's set with Piano, Bass and Rhodes in the Plugin section in the mixer and I have some chords already in the chart but now I want to try some different chords but keep the same instruments and play style. Is there a way to just interrupt the chords from a midi file but keep everything else the same ?

Basically I just want to grab the chords from a midi file and nothing else while keeping the same project settings, plugins and sounds.

I hope this makes sense haha I appreciate any help with this at all in advance

Thanks

Hi Reskent,

Save your song with a new name so that you have the original to go back to, if required, and then test BIAB's ability to do that on the newly named song. You'll soon discover what's possible. This is how I approach 'finding out' what's the program can or cannot do.

I use this approach more generally, too. Every time I reach a point in a song that has taken me quite a bit of time to arrive at, I ALWAYS save it (first) and then save it with a new name. This means that, in the worst case scenario when I lose a chunk of work, I can always load in the previous version and get a head start on what I might have lost. I usually just name the different versions MySong 1.sgu", MySong 2.sgu", etc.

By the time I finish composing a song, I've usually got around 15 different versions that I've created along the way. Because BIAB files are small, the impact on my computer's storage is minimal.

Regards,
Noel

Thanks for the response Noel96 !

I actually do that as well haha glad to see i'm not the only one.

But yeah I've actually already tried doing what i'm asking. Which is why I wanted to see if it's even possible. It might not even be a feature since BIAB has to interrupt and guess the chords from a midi file. I wanted to know if it's possible to do that and keep the same plugins in the project without having to rebuild the chain again. For instance i'll load up Keyscape (Piano), Trilian (Bass) and Kontakt (Guitar) and have every instrument routed and working but everytime I import chords from a midi file it removes all of my plugins from the mixer and turns it back into default sounds.

I've been at this for hours because I feel like the solution is very simple but i'm stomped atm.

Yes and No. You're asking two questions and they prompt different answers.

1. Is there any way to use the "import chords from MIDI" feature without changing my entire project and removing every plugin and instrument chain I set up ? No

I'm not completely sure No is correct. I tested importing chords from a midi file for a few minutes and everything I tried reset the Mixer and Style to their default settings. More thorough testing may show there is a method to do so. I haven't found it. It may be true because there is another method that works when using audio.

2. Is there a way to just interrupt the chords from a midi file but keep everything else the same ? Yes

The way to interpret the chords from a midi file without a reset to default setting is not difficult but is a work around. Convert the midi file to audio (Render) and import that audio into your project and analyze the midi file chords using the Audio Chord Wizard.

This works because there are two different methods to bring audio into a BiAB song.

If you 'open' an audio file, it reacts the same as the "import chords from MIDI" feature and resets the Chart and Mixer and all Mixer settings return to default settings.

If you 'import' audio, BIAB recognizes it's working within an existing project and brings in the Audio file but does not reset the Chord Chart or Mixer. That's accomplished by the Audio Chord Wizard and most of your settings remain the same. The ACW will change the Chord Progression, Key Signature and tempo. Of course you want the Chord progression but even if you have to change the key and tempo, changing those parameters, you don't lose the Chords or Mixer settings.

Omg ! You are a angel ! Thank you.

Obviously that isn't the direct answer to my problem but it is a more than amazing workaround.

I really appreciate you taking the time Charlie.

Thank you !!!!!

Hopefully you'll be able to the same with midi in the near future.

BIAB is originally a midi based software and it's been around for decades, I would not be surprised to find there's a method to import midi without losing all the mixer settings. I'm curious and will continue to experiment.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
