Recently I worked with a quality engineer and put together a CD of my playing for sale at gigs, whenever that may occur. <sigh>
Our main out levels were as close to 0db as possible without clipping. The resultant .wav,aiff,mp3 files sound great. The effort was a great success, both musically and educationally.
We used my biab created,logic pro mixed backing tracks to provide the "band" behind my guitar playing for an instrumental CD.
The task at hand is to bounce new backing tracks from the CD selection sans guitar (soloist) to use at gigs, whenever that may occur.
The improvement in backing track quality this CD production exercise yielded will probably require a re-mix & bounce of my current performance book- about 100 tunes. <Heavy Sigh>.
A year ago, my first biab/logic to produce the tracks effort I used a limiter and volume meter in logic to output around -12 db for the collection of backing tracks. I used MP3gain for a little tweaking of levels across all the backing tracks in my book.
Should I return to -12db or just output nearer to 0db?
Does the output level really matters as long as there is no clipping, loud enough to hear, and all the backing tracks are around the same level?.

I like the approach in your last sentence. As long as all your songs are at the same level, it won't matter because you can slightly adjust the volume of your PA.
I have found that I like a slightly different mix for play-along tracks than I might make when it is mixed for CD release and includes my part. I know that may not sound like it makes sense at first, but let me give you an example. When I perform, I lock in on the piano. It's just me, and I realize everyone else is different. But I need to really hear that piano track in a play-along mix. Make sense? If you have your "I really need to hear the ___" preference, your mix should be a little different.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
