I'm familiar with the 24-channel unit. Solid, well designed.

I have tried to avoid Tascam since they orphaned a perfectly good piece of similar hardware that was the heart of my system, the FW-1884. We users know they developed drivers for Windows 10 but refused to release them.

Matt,

Thanks for weighing in. I can relate to what you experienced with Tascam dropping support for your unit.

I went through the same thing when I bought a Roland SI-24 after reading rave reviews about it only to have them discontinue it and drop all support shortly after I got it.

I got really frustrated and didn't bother getting another unit for fear of the same thing happening again.

The new Tascam unit looked really good and the specs are very good so I'm tempted to try again but I was hoping to get some feedback.

TASCAM did the same to owners of the US800. They had a known memory leak in Windows drivers and instead of fixing it, they put them on fire sale at all outlets. Total scam. To me they are taSCAM. I will never buy another product from them as long as I live. Their macOS drivers were fine and I sold my US800 to a Mac owner.

Terrible way to treat customers.

Totally Awful Scamming Crap As Manure must be the acronym.

I didn’t know they scammed a FireWire product as well.

You’ve been warned.

If you're looking for a home studio centerpiece, the Model 16 is a solid unit with good specs but because it's a hybrid between an analog stage mixer and audio interface to a DAW, there are plenty of better options in the same price range.

If you don't need the on-board multi track recorder, for the same money, a better home studio centerpiece is the Soundcraft Signature 22MTK. It has better preamps, 100mm faders rather than 60mm and more inputs/outputs and larger audio interface - 22/24. It's drivers are very solid.

Charlie,

The Soundcraft Signature 22MTK definitely looks like a really good audio interface. I actually wouldn't need anything more than the Signature 12 MTK since space is a major consideration and I'm only looking for something for my son and I.

I'll have to compare the specs on both and see if the 12 MTK measures up to the 22MTK.

Thanks for the tip.

Also thanks to Scott for weighing in on the Tascam. He and Matt have made me a little leary of the Tascam.

Bob, The 12MTK is just a smaller version of the 22MTK the same as the Model 16 is to the Model 24. Space was also a defining consideration for me and that the 22MTK was overkill for my needs in my home studio so I re-homed it to my Church. The church had a Behringer X32 digital mixer that I was the only person that knew how to operate it and the 22MTK was something several other members had worked with it being an analog boards and they had enough experience they could operate it. They do not use the audio interface at all. At the time I purchased my 22MTK I was doing live sound jobs. I don't do them any longer.

Good to know Charlie. I'm just in the "looking" stage at this point but I was wanting to get a good interface so my son and I could record some songs before I croak.

I always regretted not having my dad record some vocals because he was a much better singer than I am.

Black lung took that away several years before he died.

Thanks for the feedback.

My problem with all of these mixer/recorders is no midi. I almost bought one a few years ago before I realized nowhere in the description did they mention midi so these ads can fool you if you're assuming they include it.

Not all of the mixer/recorders are without midi. True, now days, most don't. All will accept a midi device's audio output.

The original version Tascam DP-24/32 stand alone multi track recorders had CD burners/players and MIDI IN/OUT. Later generations including the current versions have neither.
These first generation units also had slave/master and midi control capabilities.

All of the digital Behringer XR-series Tablet Controlled Mixers - XR12,XR16,XR18 and X18 Desktop have MIDI IN/OUT

I missed this answer and it probably doesn't matter now but still, when I say no midi I mean recording midi. These midi in/outs are for remote controlling start/stop and other functions, right? They can't record actual midi information from a controller like a DAW would.

That means these mixer/interfaces are audio only while a true interface used for recording are pretty much all audio/midi interfaces meaning I can plug in my keyboard's midi out and record that along with the audio if I want both.

Bob,

I thought that was what you meant.

For me, it's of no consequence since stringed instruments and vocals are all I would be recording.

Thanks for the reply.

Take care and be safe.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
