Hi

I'm a Jazz Guitarist and at present I'm preforming gigs with a lap top (using PT and BIB or Itunes - playing either midi or mp3 files) 1/8 stereo out to 2 lines in of PA. I use DXi and it sound pretty good depending on the midi arrangement. I'm looking to improve the sound. By sound improvement I mean at least 50% or greater (or it's not worth it!) I'm trying out a hardware unit sound module called Roland Sonic Cell. It's got 1000 plus sounds and it is expandable. Of the 1000 sounds I may use 5 to 10% (in otherwords a lot of stuff I don't need at present). This unit cost around $450. I've also considered bigger units like Roland Phatom X (approx $1200) that double the amount and other bells and whistles I may or may not ever need. I've been told about Software such as Navitive Instruments and others instead of a stand-a-loan hardware sound module (one less thing to bring on a gig). With this in mind please post some feadback and opinions regarding adding an additional sound module software and or hardware. I know that getting this all to work together is a real treat, and I need help with that as well. Your comments, feedback and opinions will be very greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I'm currently using a little Ketron SD2 for my MIDI synth.

Very good sound and very good price, check them out. Small size belies the big sound IMO.

Ketron USA SD2 webpage

Also -- upgrade to BIAB 2008.5 and get the RealTracks! -- the two RealTracks jazz double bassists alone make it worth the price IMHO. Add Realdrums to RealBass and there's the best sounding BB jazz trio to date. It has been stellar, musicians are asking who the bass player is...

Mac,

Thanks. I reviewed the Ketron site and listened to the samples. Very nice! Now how hard is it to get my midi file of Buddy Rich's arrangement of Cherokee to tap into the Ketron Alto, Tenor etc so I select the sound I want the midi file to play. This arrangement has 16 separate tracks and I have similar Big Band arrangements by S. Nestico and much more. How do you select the patch in the Ketron and sink it into PT. Anybody can answer - And thanks in advance!

Mike

First download and install the Ketron SD2 Patchmap .ini file from the pgmusic support pages.

Rename the file in your PT folder, "patches.ini" to "pathesold.ini" so that the default GM patchmap does not get overwritten just in case you may ever need it again, then drop the Ketron SD2 pathes.ini file into the PT folder. You must do this with PT closed down completely. Restart PT and tell it to use the new patchmap in the Options Midi Output selection and you will be able to see all the GM plus the upper banks of the SD2 from within Powertracks.

*If you can webpost one of your bigband MIDI files, I'd be glad to run it through the Ketron and make an mp3 file of it for you to hear.

1) Find some free webspace. Plenty of webstorage sites can do that, use a websearch engine. MIDI file are relatively small.

2) Register with that site, after making sure that they allow filesharing. Upload your MIDI file to your account space and note the URL needed to access it, copy and paste it into your post here after clicking on "Reply" to someone in order to get the fullscreen for posting that includes all the accessory buttons, paste it into the little window that opens after hitting the "URL" button, then paste it again into the second window. Complete your post and use the Preview button to test the URL hotlink before posting here.

The "Quick Reply" window does NOT have all those accessory buttons in it, you must use either the Reply, Quote or New Post buttons to see them. Now here comes someone to say that you can do it using the Edit button also, but not if your post gets too old, at some point the Edit feature is set to expire on this forumboard.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
