Some settings have changed in Real Band and I am now unable to record to audio a MIDI FILE entered into Real Band tracks. I have Microsoft sound Mapper highlighted in both input and output drivers. The program will only record when I have the internal laptop microphone engaged but that then allows external noise to be recording with the audio recording. I have updated the sound card driver in Windows 7(that I am using) and on testing the sound card it indicates it is working OK. I have tried taking the internal microphone level back to zero and the program will then record on a separate track to the midi file but no sound is recorded. I have disabled the microphone but then the program will not record at all.
I have gone through many settings in Real Band but cannot work out where the problem is. I would appreciate some help. I have been onto PG Music support but so far they have not been able to suggest a solution.

So you have a MIDI track that you've recorded in RealBand, and you want to convert it to an audio track so that it sounds the same but is audio instead of MIDI - is that correct? My first question is, what are you using as your MIDI synth. If you are using a DXi or VSTi synth, then you should be able to direct render. If you are using an external MIDI module, then you would have to connect the module to your audio input and record it. If you are using a non-DXi synth like the GS Wavetable (then you should consider using the Coyote WT DXi, but otherwise..), you would need to select something like "Stereo Mix" in the Windows recording settings, and make sure this is enabled. You definitely do not want to use the Microphone input for this.

My guess is that you don't want to record the MIDI. You want to Render it to a file.
Try (top menu in RB)
Render - Merge audio and VSTi/DXi tracks to stereo wave file

Make your sound your own!
.. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Hi Andrew, thank you very much for taking the time to reply.
I do not wish to render as the program is not recording. I will explain:-
I open Real Band, I bring in a MIDI FILE into RB tracks and usually edit the Midi File by adjustments and then record it on a vacant track then render it to a wave file to create a backing track, I have previously done this many times. BUT something has changed and it will now only record on the vacant track if the internal microphone is enabled but I then get background noise in the recording. If I disable the Mic it will not record at all. When I disable the mic, Microsoft Sound Mapper is removed from the input Audio drivers tab.
Coyote is the default DXi/VSTi synth and ticketed to re-route midi playback. Microsoft GS Wavetable synth is the output driver in MIDI DRIVER SET UP tab but there is no INPUT driver showing there.
In Preferences 2-Audio MME is the audio driver type.
I have done a check on the internal sound card and it shows OK. I have done an update on the sound card. I have uninstalled BiaB and Real Band and reinstalled plus build updates.
I do not know what else to say so I will await your reply.

Again, what is the purpose of recording it to a vacant track?
Render it to a wav file directly from the MIDI.
Try it.

If you then want to import that audio back into the file you can, but if using Coyote you do not have to record it; you can render it directly to audio without jumping thru hoops.

Render- Merge Audio and DXi tracks to stereo wave file

You can also render to a separate track if so desired, but it sounds like your desired end result is a backing track.

Rharv and Andrew are correct. The method your are trying to use goes back to very old school ideas of recording in to and out of a sound card. The old sound blasters had output software for that kind of stuff. Most DAW software developers have designed rendering features to eliminate latency problem that plague round trip paths in midi and synths. Add a special folder to render the files to and just send them there then import them back to an empty track. Boom 2 minutes later your working on something else.

Well thank you very very much for the replies I have received both from Andrew and Forum members. You are right it possibly is old school. I have been recording midi files since 2005 using Power tracks and then Real Band starting in 2016. I have always used the method of recording first then rendering not knowing I could straight render the midi file. What did confuse me is I have Power Tracks and BiaB and Real Band 2016 on a tower (problem discussed is on a laptop with Windows 7) the tower runs XL and recording works on XL but not with the laptop running Windows 7.
Now my problem is solved. I have tested straight rendering a midi file to wave and of course it does work as you have said.
The only thing I have not tested is, that if I adjust the volume of some instruments will that adjustment be carried through to the rendered wave file. I will test that later.
Disappointingly though I did not get this information as a reply from PG Music Support. I am glad that I signed up for the Forum. Many regards to those concerned. Regards Norm

Yes, your volume changes will be incorporated.
It's just a newer/better way of doing things.

FWIW there may be a way to do it the 'old school' way on yur system, but it's just not worth the hassle of re-configuring windows options, etc, when you can quickly render right in the app as you've found out.

Glad we could help.

Thank you once again Rharv and Rob Helms. If you have the time to answer, can you make a suggestion as to why I can record (old style) on a track in Real Band that is in my tower running W-XP but cannot in my laptop running W- 7.I have checked settings and compared both and they seem to be the same.

Windows XP has a "record what you hear" option. By default the "record what you hear" option is disabled and hidden in Windows 7.

+++ HERE +++ is a link that gives step-by-step instructions to make the option visible and to enable the option if the option is supported by your computer hardware.

Most computers use Realtek or Intel hardware for sound and the majority of sound devices from both companies support the feature.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
