First-time poster here! Actually been using BIAB on and off for 25+ years, but never really learned it properly. Got lots of time now with this CV thing going around!
I'd like to modify the Bass Guitar in styles to have the range of a 5-string (low B). The default seems to be 4-string (low E).
See if any of the RealTracks in the screen shot below will do. Other than that the answer is likely no.
RealTracks generally provide less range than the recorded instrument is capable of producing. In most cases the artist playing the instrument records chords and riffs common to the intended style or genre.
Many VST instrument developers limit the VST range to the range of an emulated instrument.
So unless you can find some 5 string bass RealTracks or VST emulations or an emulation that offers "extended range" you're likely out of luck.
If you are using Realtracks, these are audio and so the range of the bass is already set and cannot be changed.
If you are using MIDI, then the range of the bass is more likely determined by the softsynth being used. I've found that if MIDI notes go too low, there is often no synthesiser sound for them.
That said, to change the lowest pitch for MIDI bass, follow the numbers on the image below. (It's under "Options | Preferences | Arrange"). If you don't hear anything, change the sound to Piano and see if it works.
From the sounds of things, you probably need to add B1 (lower B) or B2 (higher B) where E2 is highlighted.
I understand that Real Tracks bass lines are programmed to bottom out at E2.
Noel - I followed your instructions, generated a few songs with MIDI styles, but it would never generate a bass note below E2, even with the piano patch chosen.
Could this be a function of the individual styles?
I've just checked a random MIDI style and the E2 was set in the style. So this might be the problem
Are you familiar with using Stylemaker?
What you need to do is...
1. Open the the style you want
2. Enter "File | Stylemaker | Edit current style"
3. Select "Save As" at the top of the Stylemaker window to save the style with a new name so that you don't overwrite the current style. Style names can only use 8 characters.
(I always use NA as the beginning of my styles name because I then know that I created it and it's easy to find alphabetically.)
4. Select "Bass"
5. Click on the "Misc" button
6. Select the "More" button
Now you'll see E2. Change this and exit out of the style, saving before you leave.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
