I'm struggling to get audio chord wizard to work properly on imported MP3 files. I've watched the video tutorial several times, even took notes on each step, and followed step by step instructions to import, set bars, set audio markings, analyze, adjust bars, equalize tempo, etc. I've tried this multiple times with multiple tracks, but the end result is always a track with inaccurate timing. The move from chord to chord never lines up no matter what I try.

I purchased BIAB 2018 just for this purpose. I do make some of my own tracks and drum tracks, but I gave up after several months on importing tracks. I quit using BIAB for about a year. The BIAB 2020 version promoted an improved chord wizard, so I upgraded to BIAB 2020 and now get the same results. I must be doing something seriously wrong, but I'm at a loss what that is.

Hi rjr303,

Welcome to the forums.

Could you please let us know how you load the mp3 into BIAB for analysis.

BIAB 2020 has both older and new ACWs and how you load the song will identify which one you are using. This will help us understand your problem a bit better.

Also, when you send the song back to BIAB, do you get red lines under all the bar numbers?

Lastly, when you say, "The move from chord to chord never lines up", what is it lining up with? Are you referring to the audio file, the drums, or something else?

Regards,
Noel

Hi Noel.

Here are the steps I do when I load the file:
- File / New to open new song file
- Select File / Import / Import Audio (WAV, WMA, MP3, WMV)...
- Select the MP3 file from the BB File Open Dialog box and click Open
- Click OK on the 'Import Audio File' to accept default settings
- This creates an Audio track for the file just imported.

Each time I open a new file (File/New), there are always default instruments from the last file I worked on. This includes bass, piano, drums, guitar, etc. I always mute all of those existing tracks and have only the new Audio file active. I don't know if this is causing any of the issues, but I don't hear any of the default tracks as long as they are muted. I don't see an option to delete any of those existing tracks, so I just mute them.

The next thing I do is add bar line #1. Nothing changes. When I add the second bar line, that's when red lines appear under each bar number before I've done anything else.

When I said "The move from chord to chord never lines up", I was referring to the playback of the audio after the analyze and bar adjustments were completed. During playback, the moving marker to highlight the chord is not in sync with the actual bar/chord in the wav file, meaning if I try to play the highlighted chord during playback, it's not actually the correct chord that is playing in the audio playback. The highlighted chord is either ahead or behind the actual playback of the audio file.

Thanks.
Roger

- Select File / Import / Import Audio (WAV, WMA, MP3, WMV)...

In your process, try changing this step. There are two ways to get audio into the ACW. Import and open and they react differently.

- Open - Use the Open Icon in the upper tool bar. from the drop down menu, select the third up from the bottom
Open\Open Audio (wav, wma, mp3,wmv,cda)
- Select the MP3 file from the BB File Open Dialog box and click Open

Opening the file is what you want to do in this case rather than import. Opening instead of import disables the Style (Note the X prior to the Style name) and it also displays a yellow message prompting you to set the Master Tempo if you know it. If you know the Tempo, use the Command from the upper tool bar - Audio\Set Audio Master (Base) Tempo...

Open the Audio Editor and the imported audio file will be displayed

This step is unnecessary but I always do it as it adds clarity to my view since the Bars and audio aren't synced.

Place the cursor on the first beat of the song.
Right click and select 'Mark this point as Bar 1 of the song' and Enter

Your selected cursor point is now marked as bar 1 - If you knew the correct tempo and had previously set the Master Tempo, bar 2 and forward should be close to correct.

Click on the Marker Mode (None) button and select Audio Chord Wizard
The ACW menu buttons will load into the Audio Editor and new buttons will display
Because you had previously and accurately set bar 1, click the Snap Button and place your cursor on bar 1 and it will be accurately selected. Hit the -L- key to place a marker on bar 1.
Deselect the snap button

Ctrl A to start playback and begin counting beats. Closely inspect bar 2 for accuracy and hit the L key at bar 2

Stop playback and adjust bars 1 and 2 for accuracy if necessary.

Select Auto Marking and use the - and + buttons to adjust the track view to a comfortable size

Play through the song from the

Restart playback from the beginning and adjust the individual bars as necessary as you playback. If you see a bar needs adjustment, stop playback and set the cursor a bar or two prior to that adjustment and continue to adjust bars until the end of the song.

Once I've fine tuned the individual bars of the song, I equalize the tempo

With the tempo equalized, I analyze the chords

Once the chords are analyzed, I deselect the Audio Chord Wizard and set the ACW to None

Close the Audio Editor and correct any chords on the Chord Chart.

Hi Charlie.

This may take me a couple days to work thru this since I'm still working 12 hour days this week. Not quite retired yet!

Thanks for all the great detail.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
