Hi, hope this is not a “here we go again” question.
I am wondering if I want to record my guitars (acoustic or electric) into Reaper, do I really need a interface...eg Focusrite solo.
I have a mixer with a USB outlet and a Helicon acoustic play pedal which gives me a (I think) DI box....sorry no idea why I need one.
The mixer has buttons to give me the option to increase the gain(?) for an electric guitar if required.
Will this combination give me what Focusrite will do for me.
Then...I am guessing, this will give me options for changing sounds and effects via a VSTi out of Reaper or am I on the wrong tram.
Looking to add guitar licks etc to songs from my BiaB backing tracks.
Cheers

Does the USB on the A&H mixer allow feeding a realtime signal through to the computer, or is it (for example) only for transferring prerecorded tracks to the computer as audio files?
In other words; does it show as an Audio input device in any computer software?

The manual implies it can, though it will need some configuration/setup in your DAW.

Is that your mixer?

Thanks rharv,
yes that’s the mixer and I haven’t used it to any potential, mainly because I don’t know much about it but bought it years ago to use at gigs and now using it at home just for playing music from Spotify etc and playing back BiaB backing tracks.
(Really quite hopeless on this stuff)
So I guess you are saying to try and get a signal in say Reaper from the guitar?
Again I have just started using Reaper and because of the video support they offer, have bought the license and will make that my Daw preference.
Perhaps I will search for those settings in the videos?
Will have a play around and get back with any results
Cheers

Yep, in whichever DAW you decide to work in (Reaper, RB, Sonar) find out how to select the mixer as your recordimg input .. and then tinker with the mixer options themselves.
The linked page seemed to mention some convoluted (but cool) options .. like inputs 3/4 on the mixer seem to have magical guitar input options that 1/2 may not for a guitar input.

You'll likely spend a bit of time exploring this, but the manufacturer touts some pretty cool features on that mixer, once learned.

"ZED-10FX’s pre-amps are similar in design to our MixWizard range of mixers, but with a twist! Inputs 3 & 4 have a high impedance jack input capable of taking either a normal line level or a low level input from a guitar pickup. These newly designed inputs have been crafted with the aim of replicating the sound of a classic guitar or instrument tube pre-amp in a combo or head amp."

Have fun experimenting.

"No longer do you need to fiddle around the back of your PC to get to the soundcard inputs, only to find that the levels are all wrong and noisy. Just plug in a USB lead to your ZED, select the USB routing on the mixer and the device on your computer and that’s it! CD quality audio to and from your PC or Mac. Switches and connection through jack socket terminals provide different send/return configurations ... "

Thanks rharv, so if I get this to work, a Focusrite or similar is not necessary?

This is great...will take some time to figure details but have guitar licks over tracks through Guitar rig from Native Instruments.
Thanks so much.

That's correct. The mixer functions as a 2X2 USB audio interface.

Anyone know of a good little USB mixer with built in reverb for headphone monitoring that also has standard 5 pin midi in and out/thru?

The Behringer USB Mixer series has built in reverb and many more dynamics and effects and has standard 5 pin midi in/out but doesn't have midi thru.

They are very comprehensive and rugged units and like BIAB, the core OS is the same between all of the units except for accommodating additional inputs and outputs. Because of tariffs, the price has jumped up a bit recently.

If I recall correctly, the two Aux outs can be used for stereo headphone outs so with the headphone out, it provides 3 headphone outs. I can check that tomorrow if that will help you. The XR12 only uses USB to record a stereo mix. The XR12 and XR16 are not USB interfaces. The X18 and XR18 have 18/18 USB interface.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
