Consider a song with three choruses.
How do I put a biab solo instrument in the middle chorus, but nowhere else?

Or a jazz song with a biab solo instrument playing a head for the first and last choruses, but no solo instruments in the intervening choruses, to allow for real soloists to play.

Use bar settings Chorus's at the top of the Window

/ Mute Soloist Chorus 1 / Unmute the soloist Chorus 2 / Mute Soloist Chorus 3

Result:

The soloist will be muted through the first chorus of the song.

The soloist will be unmuted through the second chorus of the song.

The soloist will be muted through the third chorus of the song.

Just reverse the Muting settings to have the soloist to play the first and third Chorus's

In addition to what was said above, if you're more of a visual learner, or don't know how to get to bar settings, the below video goes over bar settings in an overview format:

Or you could do it the lazy way, like mine, which is to fire up the recorder of choice (Audacity, etc.) Using the manual sliders on BiaB's interface, mix the tracks manually with the mouse. Better work in stereo.

Hi tcamuso,

So, this is the way I would do it (everything I do isn't necessarily the right way, but I do figure out ways to make things work). I create songs in a linear fashion. Meaning that I go into the settings and remove the choruses and loops. I then create the intro, verse1, chorus1 then verse2 and chorus2 bridge etc. In each measure you can mute instruments, return to normal and fade variable amounts. I've read somewhere that there are a limited number of measures that you can add to a song (like 200 or something). Nothing I have ever written has had anywhere near that number and I write some pretty long songs, like 6 minutes or so sometimes.
Hope this helps...

Here's a song I created in BIAB where I do exactly what you wanted.

https://youtu.be/mUtCKl0NsJk

I started the song with the SAX playing, Muted the SAX at Bar 9 and brought it back in at Bar 61. Once I "Mute" the SAX it does not come back in until Bar 61 when I call for it.

I have tutorial on my channel that addresses things like Muting, creating Chops/Shots, changing instruments throughout, etc... You can check it out and see if it helps but in this case it's just a matter of muting the selected instrument and bringing it back in when you want to hear it again.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
