When I switch styles and try to generate individuals tracks I can't generate a brass track. There's one in the style, but when I select generate midi there's no option for brass. It used to be that strings would generate the brass, but now I get a yellow window saying there is no string track in the style. I'd really like to generate a brass section on some songs.
Hi If you are using a midi style, then you should be able to select any gm midi patch for the midi track ,providing that you have a gm synth loaded, say coyote wave table as a default vst.
If you a talking real styles then you get what was recorded as audio for the realtrack. Some real tracks have midi score data this can be used to drive a midi synth with any midi voice/patch . But be aware such midi data is only a transcription of what notes are played in the audio, for information and score generation, and as such will not sound as detailed as the realtrack Hope this helps a bit Mike
The error message is telling you the track has no midi data. If you hover the mouse cursor over the track icon does the pop up track information say the track is midi or audio? What is the number in the "Num Event = "? Has the midi been replaced by a RealTrack at some point? Does the track have the five pin midi or dual audio icon? What style are you using? Did you use the Generate button?
The track is designated as a midi track, complete with the 5 pin icon. The style I want to use is J_BASIE1 which shows and demos a brass section. Using the Generate Button, I'd like to just generate the brass section track, but there is no option for that. Even when I generate all BB tracks (entire song), it doesn't generate the brass section. In the past, brass was typically assigned to the strings midi channel, but that doesn't work any more. I have done this dozens of times before, so I think something has changed in the program, but don't know how to get around it.
OK I took the challenge. Opened new project, made first 8 tracks BB tracks, selected that style and generated. I ended up with 2 string tracks of which one is horns. From there regenerating that track should be fairly easy
.. did one of your patches change? It's just a GM brass section patch ..
Make your sound your own! .. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
Ok, this helps narrow it down, but I still need help.... if I start from scratch, the brass section midi file will generate as did yours. But, the song I have loaded started with a different style and now I want to change the style so that I can add the brass section. So... maybe when I select the new style it is not overriding the original style for the song??? I have done this numerous times previously without a hitch, so I'm still puzzled.
I don't know what you are doing wrong. Just now I opened a separate SGU file using a country style. Selected a blank track and changed it to MIDI (it was audio) Loaded the Basie style. Right clicked, Generate - Generate MIDI track - Strings Ended up with the brass track ...

At your suggestion, I tried several different sgu files. It worked on a couple of them, but not all. So... what do those files have in common? I don't know, and am not sure even what to look for.
I rebuilt the style picker several times, but that didn't change anything.
The first 8 tracks are in blue.
Starting from scratch works just fine. It's after switching styles on an already existing file that seems to be problematic.
I appreciate you helping me think this through... The file I was working on when I first noticed is a recent file. I created it just a couple weeks ago in BIAB and then started working on it in RB.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
