I had decided not to post this because my vocal has quite a few plosives I couldn't do anything about. But listening again, it's tolerable (I think). I got the idea for this song by watching the musical Showboat. It's all RTs, I've forgotten which.

Lyrics:

I know cats who swear that their only care is clothes,
Got no dough they spend it all on fashion head to toes
Peacocks in their glory but brother where's their brain,
Man, they make some story, out on Strutter's Lane

Skinny Dean, spends his green all on wool and silks,
Got no money for a meal, out of bread but dig them threads
Gold and silver tie tacks, velvet on their canes,
Hoping to get noticed, down at Strutter's Lane.

You'll find them at the finest haberdasheries
It's all worth it for a little flashery,
God forbid, if any did, dress a bit mundane,
Garish is the fashion, out on Strutter's Lane

Big boy Tom, glides aplomb, in his brand new spats,
Kids and wife are barefoot home, What's to care, they ain't going nowhere.
Everyone's in color, not a one is plain,
It's just like a circus, out in Strutter's Lane.

The gals they all love Izzy, his coiff is such a snazz,
Until he checks his wallet - there's nothing there, it's in his hair!
They know what's important, looking good's the game,
Stars are on the pavement, down at Strutter's Lane

That's a quirky step back in time.
An observation that still applied I suspect.
Cool arrangement and melody.
The solo's a bit loud - I'd have aimed for vocal level minus a bit more for the penetrating tone of a Clari.
Vocal performance is good - needs a little de-essing though.

TM,

An excellent write. Solid lyric.

The BAND works well. I agree with ray that the clarinet solo is slightly louder than it needs to be.

I like your vocal. A few plosives, but nothing too far out there...

A fun listen. Well done.

Hi TM,

A great listen and very period correct in all respects.

Loved the instrumentation and it's an excellent vocal delivery.

The solo? Yes, that first note is a bit sudden and "in-yer-face" but it's marginal
and after that it seems to work well. Otherwise, a good mix.

Enjoyed.

ROG.

That`s a very well crafted, clever lyric! Too many good lines to quote, but you paint a great picture of the characters and the vocal is in the right on-stage spirit.
I`ve never seen that show, but you gave me a cool peak behind the scenes!

Smile-inducing lyric delivered with style. The band is great..really takes ya back. It's fun imagining all the hip kids going nuts in their own day and just as fun listening to such a re-working of the style. It's a good song...and no matter what era it's in or refers to, it just works.

"You'll find them at the finest haberdasheries
It's all worth it for a little flashery," Can't find a rhyme...make one up. Cool.

You have capture this genre perfectly.

I agree that the clarinet is a tad loud but everything is perfect.

Super vocal and very catching lyrics.

That was a cool trip back to the roaring days of yesteryear.

My mom would have loved that song.

The write was good. Your vocals fit nicely and your voice tone is spot on. A few polsives if you are listening for them but nothing that ruins the mix. A pop filter will solve that.

All said.... Great job!

Hi TuneMonger,

The melody brought me back to the 50's. I think the video underlined that and was nice to watch. And your song was nice to listen to!
I heard ( nearly) no plosives and they certainly don't distract in any way. The band worked fine, but I agree with the words that has been said about the loudness of the clarinet (just a bit).
About the vocals I would have used a little (more) reverb. I know it is also a matter of taste. So think about it...

All the best,
Hans

Well, that was fun!
Good vocal, plosives didn't bother me a bit.
Carinet a tad loud, should come down maybe 2db or so.
But yeah, good song!

Love the style which you've captured really well. Great lyrics. It isn't there, it's in his hair! A big smile from me.

Wow!

A song from an era we hear so little of nowadays. Janice absolutely
loves films and songs from this era.

The write is clever and remarkably well written. The imagery is amazing.

And your vocal is perfecto for the vibe and well supported by the "band."

Gotta hint of Satchmo rasp going there smile

Outstanding!

Tunemonger,

Really, really like this. As others have said it’s such a throwback, so well done. The write is fantastic—excellent and creative use of internal rhymes; very focused write that captures the whole sound on this tune. Hard to keep the foot from tapping. Agree the clarinet needs to come down a tad—but it’s a great solo regardless. Impressive work here—enjoyed it immensely.

My very humble regards,

Deej

Thanks again for all the nice comments on this one. As I initially posted, I almost threw this one in the trash. Something made me put it up anyway, and I'm glad I did. I'm def going to lower the clarinet volume. I know my singing isn't great, but evidently I can "get by." Thanks again to all.

Very nice use of realtracks to create that positive fun old style atmosphere for the well expressive imagery. The clarinet solo and good vocals fit the mood.

The lyrics are so well crafted. I love the old-timey style. I am a fan of McCartney's "granny music," which this reminds me of.
