I am intrigued by the way a style affects the notation for a melody.
I have a standard 'straight' melody written and supported by a straight Even 8 style. When I change the style to a Swing 8 then the notation is also modified to that of the swing. Different swing styles will provide different adjustment to the style, depending on the style.
Similarly, if I use a standard 'straight' notation with a swing style and subsequently change this to a straight style then this, too, modifies the notation to compensate for the original swing style.
Why is this behaviour necessary? Surely an actual musician would have straight notation which simply specified the type of swing to be used.

Why is this behaviour necessary? Surely an actual musician would have straight notation which simply specified the type of swing to be used. Yes, I agree. In my experience, such notation is generally written in a 'straight' layout, and a comment is added to play it with a 'swing' feel. However, what you are experiencing is that the notation display appears to show the exact played style rather than use such an interpretation.

Changing to a swing style will not change the melody. If it was straight it will stay / play straight. It may look like swing, but you can change that in the notation options window by deselecting triplet resolution. Now it will show as straight.

Jonel, Great question. I don't think I've seen a similar question asked during the time I've been in the forum. Changing to a swing style will not change the melody. Dave, Your observation is interesting to me. Curious question, how did you figure that out and what led you to test your conclusion by deselecting triplet resolution? As an aside, that looks like a neat trick to share in the Tips & Tricks forum section!

I am a long time user of BIAB so I probably found the triplet box years ago. I use BIAB to create my "band" and I like the randomness of the result. I also have all my music in chart form with lyrics, endings and repeats. So somewhere I have picked up little tricks. For instance, unless you really want 16ths, why not print with triplet format.
I often have music that just looks ugly and I have found that switching to (or from) triplets often cleans it up. I am also happy to mix swing and even real tracks in a song, except for drums.
I never need or want to tweak a track, and I have never frozen a track. So my bag of tricks is very limited. Getting a good fake sheet is probably more important than the actual sound. I do like to experiment with different genres and styles, and being able to easily switch swing / even was one of my first 'tricks'.
Just wish PGM would put some effort into improving printing notation

Hi Jonel,
I don't know if you have had a look at this but another factor that affects the display of notes -- in notation mode at least -- is the "Tick Offset". It's found under "Opt" when in "Notation Mode".
By default, BIAB has this set to automatic and different styles usually load in different values for the tick offset. The aim of this setting is to add and element of realism to a melody.
Since I prefer to have my melodies look exactly as I notate them, I always have the Tick Offset = 0 and the "Auto set tick off-set" deactivated.

Thanks Noel, I'll look at that. I've thought about this a lot and tried to justify myself why PG Music might change the notation to follow the style swing/straight, but I still think the simple straight notation for the user would be best. Other interpretations could be added (or a 'hidden' sheet for use by the software maybe).
