Hi,

I have a question. My guess is this can't be done (yet) but I will ask anyway :-)

I have a BIAB song file that originally had a swing style only. It has a melody and (as one would expect) the "Editable Notation Mode" appears as swing style (triplets) as well. Last night I changed parts of the song to Latin style (great feature by the way - love BIAB). Although our Jazz Jams Club does not use the melody I was thinking that in some situations having the Midi melody track available might help some avoid confusion. The problem with this idea (not a big problem) is the midi melody still plays in triplet swing style while the backing tracks are in Latin (even 1/8ths) style. It sounds amusing :-) Is there a way to have the "Editable Notation Mode" Style switch back and forth to match the current swing or Latin style? If there is a way to do this IMHO BIAB has reached 15 in 10 rating :-)

Thanks,
John

A couple of things to try

The print options has a check box for triplet resolution which will SHOW the song either as straight or swing. It doesn't change the underlying melody however.

You can also try Quantize.
Select Melody | Edit Melody Track | Quantize, Time Adjust | Humanize Melody from the tool bar. There is an option to change the feel from swing to even.

This does (I think) change the underlying melody, so it might do what you want.

But I don't think it will satisfy your request to "switch back and forth " but you could certainly save an even and a swing version and just pick the one you need

Thanks Dave,

I found this and tried it. It is interesting but the lead sheets need to stay the same.

I tried all 3 Humanize options. You were correct. It chooses one or the other and does not switch back and forth.

I think to switch back and forth would be a lot of programming which is why I was thinking it is not available as a feature.

What is interesting is MuseScore can switch between playing straight 1/8ths and triplets properly on a bar by bar basis. However it does not have swing feel interpretation of 1/8th notes as far as I know. Ideally any such feature in BIAB needs to be set up with the ability to do these things.
1/ Set the individual beat subdivisions to match the style used for the current bar (a batch update).
2/ Tweak the individual beats to have either triplet or 1/16th subdivisions so triplets can be inserted in a Latin style or any combo possible such as inserting 1/16ths in a swing feel or even double time (division of 6 per beat).

For our jam group it would be a very low priority request. Not sure if there is much money to be made from such a programming effort.

I just redid the "Humanize With Straight Feel". It does hold the triplets while smoothing out the 1/8ths to straight feel. If it also holds the 1/4 note triplets this is excellent. Knowing this it seems that all it needs is a "Humanize Matching Bar-By-Bar Style Feel" option which does a matching record type routine to (on a bar by bar basis) match the current bars style.

I think this would not be that difficult after all. I will make this a suggestion. To bad a PG-Music employee could not just move it to the wish list category :-)

I have been doing it the way Dave describes it for years.

Nevertheless, if you’re a Midi style user, most midi styles are labeled as “even” or “swing”. If you go from swing to even, Biab suggests to change the melody to straight, and does it well.

So, John’s suggestion regarding “Real styles” is a fair one.

+1

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
